St John Fisher Catholic High School Newsletter 19 5 July 2019 Dear Parents/Carers Last night I had the privilege of seeing some of our amazingly talented students in the school’s production of Peter Pan. I came away so pleased that the future of performing arts is safe in these enthusiastic students’ hands. However, none of the amazing sporting, performing, visits, experiences and teaching would be possible without the incredibly talented and dedicated teachers, support staff and teaching assistants that work tirelessly to provide these opportunities. As I come to the end of the first year of my two year contract as Headteacher at St John Fisher, I have been impressed by how well the Fishers Family works together to support not just the academic excellence of each child, but also the rounded education of all. It is a joy to see the children grow in knowledge and confidence under the care of our fantastic educational and pastoral teams. I exhort you to encourage your children to get involved in as many activities that they can next year. The strongest memories that we take from school are the ones where we have stretched ourselves beyond our comfort zone and made new friends as we have shared new experiences. I thank all of the staff and students that have made and continue to make St John Fisher Catholic High School such an incredible place. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 Kind regards Mr P Brockwell Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers

Last night I had the privilege of seeing some of our amazingly talented students in the school’s production of Peter Pan. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Kind regards

Please could you bring any revision guides (with the exception of English and Maths) to reception marked for the attention of the Admin Office so that we can make these available to students. Many thanks in anticipation. Year 10 Wellbeing Day SJF has recently worked in partnership with the Harrogate Healthy Child Team, the Samaritans and Police on a pilot Wellbeing day for all Year 10 students. The aim of the day was to raise awareness and understanding of emotional health and mental well being and make sure that students know where they, or a friend, can access support if they need it. The sessions included health relationships, managing positive and negative emotions, self harm, accessing support at times of crisis and risky behaviours. Over lunchtime a Wellbeing Marketplace was set up with representatives from the agencies delivering the wellbeing sessions as well as representation from other support agencies in the area including Mind and Compass Buzz. The school librarians supported the event with a comprehensive display of all the wellbeing books and magazines that are available to students. All students across the school were able to attend this event and student wellbeing champions were available to signpost their peers to sources of support. Further work with a small focus of group of Year 10 students is now taking place to review the day so that it can be an annual fixture in the Year 10 timetable. The pastoral team at the school would like to thank everyone who has helped with the Well-being Day. We are very pleased that at the end of the day 95.74% of Year 10 students said that they were now aware of the services they could access for support with their emotions and 86.17% said they felt better able to manage their own emotions or help others manage theirs.

Harlow Carr SevenTea Competition A group of Y7 and Y9 students took part in the SevenTea container competition to celebrate Harlow Carr’s 70th birthday. The event was opened by gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh and attracted 13,700 visitors. The event was a great success and SJF’s pots and containers were a huge hit and Y7 students Harry Mason and Pawel Maciarz’s came joint winner of the People’s Choice Award (see below photo), receiving a scrumptious fondant fancy cake from Bettys Café Tea Rooms. Well done! Summer Showcase To support our student Iris Wall in attending National Youth Theatre this summer, a showcase was held on Monday 1st July to raise money. Singers, Dancers, Musicians and Actors from Yr9 and 10 performed their own work and we were very fortunate to have Anna Wicks join us too. Anna recently completed her training in Musical Theatre at London Studio Centre receiving a First Class Honours Degree! Thanks Anna and all our pupils for performing and thanks to the community for attending. The evening raised £575! Good luck Iris. Year 10 Art Trip to Harewood House - Monday 1st July On Monday the Art Department took 40 Y10 Art Students to Harewood House for a workshop with Harriet Lawton on 'Why Craft Matters', which included an exhibition of craft by leading artists. This was followed by a workshop with Harriet where the students used patterns sketched from the house to make wallpaper designs. The students also had the opportunity to visit the amazing gardens and farm where they gathered further resource for their GCSE art portfolios.

Swimming Success Congratulations to Year 10 student, Thomas Plant who has qualified for 6 events at the Swim Wales Summer Nationals and will be competing during the summer holidays in Swansea.

Sports Results U14 Girls’ Football Congratulations to the St John Fisher Under 14 Girls’ Football team who were crowned North Yorkshire Champions after a thrilling final contest against Archbishop Holgate. The girls played some excellent football that was pleasing on the eye, dominating for large spells of the game. Despite the soaring temperatures, Natasha Cree, Ruby Watts, Rebecca Hugill and Robyn McKendrick were untouchable in the midfield, their combination play dictated the game and became something to admire.

Hattie Robson opened the scoring with a fantastic turn and half volley into the bottom corner. Therese Tolan grabbed the second after following up from Ruby’s strike that hit the crossbar. Robyn McKendrick and Natasha Cree’s goals were goal of the season contenders. Robyn’s ferocious strike came from a fantastic team move which saw her leather the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards out. Natasha Cree took inspiration from Robyn and following a similar team move, she struck the ball from all of 30 yards, firing high into the net and consequently lobbing the keeper.

The score line finished 4-2 to St. John Fisher with SJF conceding 2 goals in an uncharacteristically sloppy 10 minutes. However, SJF remained composed and finished the game strong. This victory sees the girls retain the North Yorkshire Cup and ends the 2018-19 academic year on a high. This year, the team have been crowned Area & North Yorkshire Champions, 5-a-side County Champions across all ages, and finishing as one of the four best teams in England after reaching the semi-final of the National Cup. Well done girls, you should be extremely proud. Thank you for all your efforts. Have a brilliant summer and let’s look to replicate that success next year! Tennis

News from the Science Desk – July 2019 Glastonbury: Sir David Attenborough hails plastic ban This year Glastonbury has banned single use plastic bottles. Festival goers were asked to bring their own to re-fill. The initiative has been praised by Sir David Attenborough whose Blue Planet 2 programme highlighted the issue. This may have reduced the number of bottles used at the Festival by 1 million. Sadly, not everyone got the underlying message. Year 7 All classes have completed their end of year assessments, which we will use to assess Y7 progress across the year and to report home a forecast grade at the end of term. Sets in Y8 will remain of balanced mixed ability in each class, but will allow pupils to integrate further with pupils from the other forms, in Science. We will review each test with pupils in order that they can identify the areas in which they have struggled with a view to working to improve and fill any gaps in understanding, skills or knowledge. You will receive a comment report at the end of term reflecting progress across this first year in Secondary Science. Year 8 All classes have completed their end of year assessments, which we will use these test to assess Y8 progress across the year and KS3, and to report home a forecast grade at the end of term. The results will further allow us to stream on each side of Y9. Sets 1 and 2 on each side of the year are parallel to one another, sets 3 and 4 also with one another, with an additional set 5, beyond those. We deliberately teach all groups the identical material in order to allow movement between tiers across the year, and/or at the end of it. We will review each test with pupils in order that they can identify the areas in which they have struggled with a view to working to improve and fill any gaps in understanding, skills or knowledge. You will receive a short report at the end of this term. Year 9 All classes have completed their end of year assessments, which we will use these test to assess Y9 progress across the year, and to report home a forecast grade at the end of term. These, together with all of the end of unit tests, will allow us to merge the two halves of the year in to starting sets in Y10. We deliberately expose all pupils to all appropriate material in order that pupils can initially be set in Y10 regardless of their setting in Y9. We will review each test with pupils in order that they can identify the areas in which they have struggled with a view to working to improve and fill any gaps in understanding, skills or knowledge. You will receive a short report at the end of this term. Year 10 We have completed marking the mock examinations and have reviewed grades. The examinations consisted of 1hr examinations in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The results of these will allow a further opportunity to review setting for the remainder of the GCSE. Grades have been issued, and then we are now reviewing each paper in class, for pupils to fill the gaps in their understanding.

It is clear that there will some movement between sets and tiering and pupils will be informed if this includes them, with any changes of setting taking place at the beginning of Y11. You will receive a comment based report at the end of this term which will highlight the successes and/or issues for the year ahead. Year 11 Have a well-earned rest and re-charge your batteries. I am sure that your parents and carers would look forward to gaining some remunerative summer work, and we look forward to seeing you on results day in August.

Events and Clubs Space Academy (Y8,9,10 & 12). On Thursday 27th June, student scientists from St John Fisher in North Yorkshire showcased their cutting-edge research findings at the Institute for Research in Schools summer student conference at the National STEM Learning Centre in York. It is one of a series of five student conferences being held across the country over the course of three weeks. This is all made possible by the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS), which has given these passionate student scientists in our area, access to real world and potentially life changing science projects. These students could be the next generation of scientists to change the world as we know it. Steve Greenwood, Chief Executive if the Institute for Research in Schools, said: “It is vitally important to give our student scientists a platform to share their research findings with the scientific community and with each other. I want to offer my congratulations to St John Fisher who delivered an excellent presentation on their important contribution to research in schools. “Our projects open up the world of science to every child, no matter their background or gender. Science is for everyone and it offers so much more than just academic success. Taking part in scientific research from an early age develops so many important characteristics needed for later life: confidence, resilience, severance, teamwork, problem solving, public speaking – with the bonus of being fascinating and fun.” Please take the time to look at the work that our pupils produced for this conference. Pupils are now deciding whether to analyse data from the James Webb telescope, or to try to replicate the early Martian atmosphere, amongst other projects.
