Saint John Fisher Catholic Primary School
Autumn Term: 21st September 2018 ‘To live, love and learn in our caring community.’
Dear Parents, Pupils, Staff and Parishioners, It has been an extremely busy week at SJF and the children are settling in well to their new classes and routines. Our Year 6 children joined together with the Parish on Sunday to celebrate their commitment to the promises they have made as they journey towards their Sacrament of Confirmation in November. Please keep our Year 6 children in your prayers.
On Wednesday Dan Callow and Emily Jordan led our whole school in a beautiful Retreat Day. We reflected
upon Jesus as The Good Shepherd: Remembering His love and goodness never fails us.

On Thursday, Year 5 and 6 joined the rest of our Romero Family in a special Thanksgiving Mass to mark the beginning of a new academic year at St. Patrick’s Church. We were very proud of our children as they sang our Romero Song.
‘We plant the seeds, that one day will grow.
Nurturing the talent of tomorrow. We are a loving family,
in the Romero Academy.’
Forest School Begins:
Some of our Reception children started Forest School sessions this week and were really sensible exploring a new area. Our main activity was using leaves in our artwork. Children's different interests were really clear, with some going on bug hunts and others working on some great balancing! All of our Reception children will have an opportunity to take part during the year. Don't forget Forest School after school club is available for KS2 to sign up to as well!

Science Wow Morning – Year 5
Year 5 took part in their first science 'Wow' morning of this year by investigating one of the oldest machines used by humans; levers. Although the machines were simple, we made good use of modern technology during our experiment, mirroring images onto our new high tech screens so all children in the class could see how to get the best results and making use of a spreadsheet to record data. It was great for the children to see how real scientists would use programs to simplify the production of tables, calculate averages and draw appropriate graphs.
Roald Dahl: To celebrate Roald Dahl day on the 13th of September, some children from Class 5 investigated both their senses of smell and taste with Mrs Caldwell on Monday. As the witches (in Dahl's book of the same name) hunted children by sniffing them out, we decided to find out how good our sense of smell was when we couldn't see the objects being tested.
It turned out that identifying smells without our other senses to help was much trickier than we at first thought. Cinnamon was confused with pepper, vinegar with lemon juice and vanilla with chocolate! Taste without smelling was even more difficult, most children couldn't taste anything when trying cinnamon and holding their nose at the same time.
Aspirations Week:
To kick off our aspirations week on Monday we will be having a visit from an author who will inspire all our children from year 1 to year 6 to develop their own love of writing and reading. Her books have also been made into a TV series and she will be sharing her own experiences of the writing, publishing and script development processes with energy, humour and great communication skills. Janet will be available to meet, sign and sell her books at the end of the school day, so the children will have the opportunity to have their very own book signed by the author. These items will be for sale in the school hall straight after school, so please come along and have a look: Story books £6.99, Colouring Books £3.99
Pencils, erasers, badges and key rings 50p, Finger puppets and Soft toy Chicos from £2.99 to £11.99
