Paul's back! After last week's "violent abuse," opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the "energizing evangelist," transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul's past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation's future "new heaven, new earth" should inspire our optimism. But Revelation's present assurance, "Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race," should challenge us to become "missionaries of mercy." Because, when announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis declared that the Church's credibility is completely dependent on our showing unconditional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to life's noblest virtues. Appropriately, today's Jubilee Day for Youth looks forward to July's World Youth Day in Krakow, whose theme is "Blessed are the merciful." Fittingly, in today's Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: "This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." "I GIVE YOU A NEW COMMANDMENT" Last week, the Good Shepherd declared, "My sheep hear my voice." This week, we hear Jesus loud and clear: "I give you a new commandment: love one another." In case we wonder, "What's new about that?" Jesus specifies exactly what he means. "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." Jesus loved us more than himself! Paul explained, "Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave; humbled himself, obedient even to death on a cross." Nearly seventeen hundred years ago, Saint Cyril of Alexandria preached: "To love as Jesus loved us? That really is something new: for our love to go that far! Nothing can come before the love we have for our brothers and sisters. No possessions. Not our reputations. Not even our lives! For our neighbors' salvation, we should be ready to die, as Jesus' first disciples did!"

Next Sunday, May 1st, the reception of First Holy Communion our children will take place at the 10:00 AM Mass. This is truly a parish celebration as we share with these children the joy of receiving Jesus for the first time. The procession into Church will begin at 9:45 so we ask you to come early next week for this Mass. The children who attend the Polish Language School will receive their First Holy Communion at the 11:30 AM Mass. The Parish Societies with their banners are invited to come and lead the children into Church at both Masses if they are able. On Sunday, May 8th, at 10:50 we will have our May Procession and Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will process outside (if weather permits) from the Church to the garden where the statue of the Blessed Mother stands. As we process, we will sing the Hymn, Immaculate Mary in English and Polish. When we reach the garden, we will recite the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary and then the statue of the Blessed Mother will be crowned. We hope many of you will participate in this beautiful ceremony, as we honor the Mother of God. The School Children, PREP Children, Polish Language School Children, our First Communicants and Altar Servers are all asked to participate, as well as all the Parish Societies and Organizations with their banners. We are having the procession between Masses to encourage many more parishioners to attend this beautiful and traditional ceremony which has been a part of our parish life and the month of May for many years. We thank those who purchased Lottery Tickets for the months March. A total of 514 tickets were sold at $5.00 each for March. After prize money was paid out, a profit of $1,920.00 was realized.. You can purchase these tickets after Masses on Sundays or at the Rectory during office hours. If you can sell a few, call the Rectory and speak to Terry. Every little bit helps to maintain our parish.. Purchase your May tickets now. We especially thank all our sellers for their donated time to sell these tickets each month. Next weekend the ushers will distribute Manna Bags as you leave Church. We ask you to fill these bags with non-perishable food and return them on Sunday, May 15th. "BEHOLD, I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW"
Two of those disciples, Paul and Barnabas, describe their trials as something we should all be ready for: "It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." But that suffering pales compared to the success they never expected: God "opened the door of faith to the Gentiles." Their do-and-dare zeal dares us to make their story ours. True, Revelation's "new heaven and new earth," with "no more death or mourning, wailing or pain," isn't something we can accomplish. But "Behold, I make all things new," says Jesus--present tense. For Jesus can indeed work in us and through us to begin conquering human malice with gospel goodness. So Jesus calls us, Pope Francis says, to put a smile on our faces as we reach out to embrace all who live a marginalized existence, call each of them by name, care for the frailties of the weakest, and support first tottering steps on shaky knees, certain that whatever we do for the very least of our brothers and sisters, we are doing for Jesus himself.

TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today? *****************************************
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Paul and Barnabas continue their travels, spreading the faith and unifying the churches (Acts 14:21-27). Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading — John’s vision of God dwelling with the human race (Revelation 21:1-5a). Gospel — As Jesus has loved us, so we must love one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35).
********************************************* CHURCH “Church” in Greek means convocation, or assembly in Latin, because all are called to be members of it. —St. Isidore
SPIRITUAL READING You will not see anyone who is truly striving after spiritual advancement who is not given to spiritual reading. —St. Athanasius
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The French Revolution swept the church in France away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and romps. While millions of faithful simply went underground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week was demolished along with the names of the months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens. In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children for baptism. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
