Summer is here and after our tough winter and cold spring it is a welcome visitor. Summer is a

time for slowing down. Most of my columns will be about spirituality, since the activity level in

the parish drops like a stone in July and August. The only major activity is the Festival Commit-

tee, led by Dan and Florence Loch, which has already started working on the Festival which

will take place on the last Sunday of September the 30

th

. This year we will also have the raffle

drawing at the Festival picnic.

As you know, I am a lover of stories. I a convinced not only that our lives are stories, co-

authored by God and ourselves, but that the key events in that story need to be retold over and

over, for at each telling they reveal more about the God who is present in the depths of the

story.

Mary Gordon is a renowned novelist who tells the story of her first Communion back in the

“good old days”. Her story comes in a book of essays, A SENSE OF WONDER, edited by

Brian Doyle and published by Orbis books. She was six years old and hated school because

she already knew how to read, so it was not challenging. But then came the preparation for first

Confession and first Communion. Her remembrance of that first Confession reminded me of

what the Sacrament was like in those days, often psychologically damaging for a six year old.

Thank heaven that we now see the sacrament not as a judgment, but rather as a means of

healing. However, Communion was different. It moved her young self on many different levels.

In those days she memorized this prayer:

“Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before Thy face I humbly kneel and with

burning soul, pray and beseech Thee, to fix deep within my heart lively sentiments of faith,

hope and charity, true contrition for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment. While I contem-

plate with great love and tender pity, Thy five most precious wounds, pondering over them

within me, And calling to mind the words which David, Thy prophet, said of Thee, my Jesus,

‘They have pierced my hands and my feet, They have numbered all my bones.’”

Gordon said that her six year old soul knew what burning was, she felt a deep need to love

God, to be good, not out of fear of punishment, but because not to be good would betray God’s

love for her.

If you are old enough to remember those days think of your first Communion and what it meant

to you. Gordon closes by saying, “I know that, whoever I am, something lodged in me, or was

lodged that day. The taste for the invisible7..a way that I can know myself. My highest self,

the truest one, the one that ordinary life must, by its nature, blur and muddy. “

Wonderful!

HOSPITAL VISITS

If you are admitted to the hospital,

please remember that in order to

have a priest visit, you need to

identify yourself to the hospital staff

as a Catholic and if possible, have

a family member call the Parish Office to let us

know what hospital and room number you are in.

TWEETS OF THE WEEK

@Pontifex “When we are firmly

united to the God who loves and

sustains us, we are able to with-

stand all life’s difficulties and

challenges.”

@BishopCaggiano “We must put our faith into

action and assist those in need as an authentic

expression of our love for them and God.”

@JamesMartinSJ “Gospel: In last weeks Gos-

pel, Jesus is mocked by his disciples after he

asks who, in the large crowd, touched him; and

by onlookers who ‘ridicule’ him when he comes to

heal Jairus’s daughter. Neither the mocking nor

ridiculing prevents Jesus from doing what he has

come to do: love.”

We had the first of our Confirmation retreats on

Friday, June 29th. Sixteen of our soon to be 10th

graders spent the day at The Convent of St.

Birgitta on Long Island Sound. It was a beautiful

day and the kids were terrific! At the end of the

retreat Joe asked the kids to sum up their day in

one word. They said it was quiet, unique, calm,

relaxing, beautiful, and a break. The teens who

attended are:

Dylan Ackerman, Tommy Brown, Kevin Chuba,

Olivia D’Elia, Taylor DeNardo, Bendan Edvardsen,

William Edvardsen, Chris Ely, Sara Genuario,

Rhianna Gilberston, Jake Lusardo, Daniel Miller,

Joseph Pistulli, Brinn Renwick, Billy Sullivan, and

Nico Tullio

Our second group of teens will be on retreat on

Monday, July 2. Please keep all of our teens in

your prayers as they prepare for Confirmation on

December 2, 2018.
