Pope Francis has said that he wants the Church to “make more evident its mission of being a witness of mercy.” In the Diocese of Grand Rapids, our local church will formally inaugurate the Jubilee on December 13 at 10:00 a.m. Mass, when we will open the Holy Door of Mercy at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. The Sacrament of Penance will be available on these days as well. Our parishes, our communities and our homes should become oases of mercy. I invite you further to explore how you are personally contributing to a culture of mercy. You might ask yourself: where do I experience mercy in my own life? Who has shown me mercy? December 6, 2015

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Pope Francis gives concrete expression to his own practice of mercy by what he says and what he does. We

hear themes of mercy in his words and we witness mercy in his actions, most especially how he regards the poor, im-

prisoned and marginalized in our society. Last March, Pope Francis announced plans for a yearlong Jubilee of Mercy

beginning on December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Pope Francis has said that he wants the

Church to “make more evident its mission of being a witness of mercy.”

In the Diocese of Grand Rapids, our local church will formally inaugurate the Jubilee on December 13 at 10:00

a.m. Mass, when we will open the Holy Door of Mercy at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. This is a tradition that has

been a part of our faith for centuries. Those who make a faithful pilgrimage to the Cathedral during the Jubilee Year

will gain a plenary indulgence when fulfilling the traditional requirements. One of the goals of Pope Francis is to focus

on and widen access to the Sacrament of Penance. In our diocese, I call on all the faithful to be united in celebrating

God’s gift of mercy on Thursday, February 25th from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. when every parish will be open and the

Sacrament of Penance will be available during those hours. Additionally, in solidarity with the universal Church we

gather at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew on March 4th/5th for “24 Hours for the Lord” uniting in prayer with all Catho-

lics around the world. The Sacrament of Penance will be available on these days as well.

Our parishes, our communities and our homes should become oases of mercy. I invite you further to explore

how you are personally contributing to a culture of mercy. You might ask yourself: where do I experience mercy in my

own life? Who has shown me mercy? If we don’t acknowledge that God has been merciful to us, then our hearts will

grow hardened to the opportunities to extend that mercy to others.

Please visit our diocesan website, dioceseofgrandrapids.org, for updates on events around the diocese. In the

coming year, may we follow our Christian call to “be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful.”

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak

We are excited to announce that our parish has subscribed to a dynamic new online platform called FORMED. Every parishioner will have 24/7 access to the best Catholic content on any device, including your computer, smartphone and tablet with internet access. With FORMED you’ll find video programs that explain the Catholic faith, explore the deepest meaning of marriage, receive Bible studies on a variety of topics and includes inspiring audio talks. And you’ll find presenters like Dr. Tim Gray, Dr. Edward Sri, Dr. Mary Healey, Chris Stefanick, Dr. Scott Hahn and a lot more. They’re all part of our parish subscription. It truly is the Catholic faith - on demand. Here’s how easy it is to get FORMED: Go to www.FORMED.org, click on “sign up” in the upper right hand corner of the screen, and enter our parish code (ZNCB4D) into the box under “Does your parish already have FORMED?” Submit the code and then create your own profile (user name and password). There is more information available on St. John Vianney Parish website and on the myParish app.

In response to our Catholic mis-sion of welcoming the stranger, St. John Vian-ney will be offering free ESL classes in the School Art Room each Wednesday, starting January 6, 2016 from 6:30—8:00 PM. Morning Offering Prayer: O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, rep-aration for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.

The Pope asks us to pray for two intentions each month.

These are the intentions for December:

♦ Experiencing God’s Mercy ~ That all may experience the mercy of God, who never tires of forgiving.

♦ Families ~ That families, especially those who suffer, may find in the birth of Jesus a sign of certain hope.

A Family Perspective ~ December 6, 2015

Today’s gospel shows John the Baptist and parents have similar vocations. Like

the Baptist, parents are asked to make “rough ways smooth” and to “prepare the

way of the Lord” for their families. This Advent ask: “Does my life hinder or

help my family to know Jesus?”

Respect Life ~ December 6, 2015

“You also must be prepared, because the Son of Man will

come at an hour when you do not expect Him.” Mt 24:44 Reflection: The word “Advent” means “coming” and the season focuses on the coming of Christ at the end of time, and then on His first coming at Christ-mas. The joy of advent is joined by strong warning that we must be prepared for His coming. Promot-ing justice and human rights is a key element of our preparation. A society that aborts its children is not

prepared for the coming of Christ.

Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus. May we be prepared to welcome You

by welcoming all human life.

Infant Baptism We welcome into the Christian community the following children who were baptized last month:

Avery Elizabeth Clifford

Steven & Katie (Krellwitz) Clifford Henry Mark Schwallier

Eric & Lisa (O’Brien) Schwallier

May God continue to bless them and their families.

THANK YOU! For your generous donations of food, turkeys and cash/gift cards for our Thanksgiving food baskets. With your help we delivered food to 42 families! Thank you to the volunteers who helped with organiz-ing, packing and delivering the baskets.

Lighting the Advent Wreath Candles There are still some slots available for individuals and families interested in lighting the Advent wreath candles at the beginning of our weekend

Masses. Volunteers may sign up in the Gathering Area or contact Mary Witucki if you’d like to volunteer: 724-3128 or [email protected]

Next weekend is the Retirement Fund for Religious collection. You can find envelopes in the pews.

**Please make your check payable to: ST. JOHN VIANNEY CHURCH and note in the memo area: Reli-

gious Retirement Fund. Thank you!

CSA Update The annual Catholic Services Appeal in our diocese and parish is nearing completion. Our goal has been 100% participation; however 889 registered families, representing 67% of our parish households, have NOT pledged. Last year we did not achieve our CSA Assessed Goal, costing the parish $11,455. Today that deficit is $35,582. If all those who have not pledged made the commitment of $40 we’d achieve both participation and assessed goals. Please pray with me that those who have not yet had an opportunity to participate in the Catholic Services Appeal will lis-ten to their hearts and make a generous commitment for the greater work of our diocesan Church family. Online gift giving and pledges can be completed at www.dioceseofgrandrapids.org/CSA. If you need assistance with this, come into the Parish Office and Patty or Emily can assist you. All funds raised over our goal will go toward the Faith in Our Future campaign.

We thank you God for all your goodness to us, and in thanksgiving to all who have responded to the Catholic Services Appeal 2015, that their generosity may be rewarded with the growth, love, and joy that giving gener-ously brings.

The holidays are here and I know you have started your Christmas shopping?! As you consider what to get and where to get it, you will most certainly go online to shop. You will probably peruse Amazon, so please consider AmazonSmile. When you shop at AmazonSmile, Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price to St John Vian-ney Foundation. Bookmark the link http://smile.amazon.com/ch/38-2700546 and support us every time you shop.

We have begun to get your donations from AmazonSmile and while they are still small, there is considerable

potential for successful fund raising from this organization. Check it out and help the Foundation. Happy shop-

ping!

I am in the office one day a week, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Email or call me at 616-724-3129 or [email protected] if you have questions. Please be patient if you don’t see a response to your question for a few weeks.

MISSION OF THE CHURCH -

Of her very nature, the Church is missionary. This means her members are called by God to bring the Gospel by word and deed to all peoples and to every situation of work, education, culture, and commu-nal life in which human beings find each other. The members of the Church seek to transform society not by power but by persuasion and by example.
