Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division encounter against our friends from Runcorn Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. It has been a few weeks since we were last here at Edge Green Street to take on an Ashton Athletic outfit that had many a familiar face in the line-up and also in their dugout. After a goalless first half we fell behind when last seasons NWCL Premier Division Player of the Year Matty Ward took advantage of an error by Dale Newbrook to net shortly after the restart but came back to level through Ste Edwards. Parity was to be short lived as we gifted Ward the ball on the edge of the area and he made no mistake rifling the ball home. Town huffed and puffed but looked to be slipping to defeat before Edwards netted a second from close range in the 7th minute of added on time. We followed this up with a bit of a road trip as we first visited Padiham where we fell behind to a goal with seconds on the clock before levelling early in the second half as Ash Rimmer netted from the spot after a foul on Cole Ashton. We then conceded very quickly after getting level and ended up falling to a 4-1 reserve. A week later we took the trip to Daisy Hill for the first competitive contest between the teams. A fine display saw us secure a comfortable 5-0 win with Greg Harrison, Shaun Judge, Scott McNair and an Edwards brace sealing the win. We then took the long trip south to Stone and again started slowly this time conceding after 62 seconds and turning in an awful first half display. It was a classic game of two halves as we came out a different side for the 2nd half, levelling through the evergreen Brian Hatton before skipper Carl Osman put us in front and Edwards netted his seventh of the season to secure all three points. This afternoons visitors will be keen to continue their recent good form and we will need to be switched on to make sure we keep things tight early on and give ourselves a change of a return. Finally, lets get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Runcorn Town were formed in 1967 under the name of Mond Rangers FC. They played for the first few years in the Runcorn Sunday league, and in 1973 they made the decision to try Saturday football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL).
In their first season they finished as runners up, and after amalgamating with ICI Weston for the 1974/75 season, they became one of the strongest sides in the league. They remained in the WDL until 1984 when they were elected to join the West Cheshire League (WCL) Division Two. Mond established themselves as a good, solid mid-table team until the 1991/92 season when they won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl as well as a respectable sixth place finish. The following season they finished third in the league and reached the Bowl final, with another third place finish the following season in which they scored 100 goals and regaining the Bowl. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring 118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost to Poulton Victoria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere. Despite sharing the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy in that first season, Division One proved a struggle and they were relegated for the first time in the clubs history in 2001/02. Success returned in 2004/05 with the team finishing as runners up in Division Two, winning the Runcorn Senior Cup and reaching the final of the Bowl. Ahead of the 2005/06 season, the club changed their name to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more
professional look to the club in general, and hopefully increase support from both businesses and individuals in the local community. A decision was also made to try and improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the North West Counties League. The season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time. The following three seasons saw top four

. . . Runcorn Town Football Club finishes, although the main progression was off the field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the North West Counties League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history. It is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations, with the team losing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners-up, with James McShane finishing as the league's overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quarter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup, whilst Warrington were held in the Cheshire Senior Cup before losing on penalties. In the clubs' FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote
headlines as they progressed through four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS, the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition. Last season saw the Premier Division newcomers have a season they could not have dreamt of, in one of the closest campaigns for a number of years they ran the eventual Champions Ramsbottom United all the way with results on the final day of the season. Runcorn needed to win at home to AFC Blackpool and hope that Ramsbottom slipped up but a 2-1 reverse couple with a victory for the Riverside outfit saw the Rams secure the title and with it promotion.

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with Runcorn Town FC. Lets hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. Its been a while since weve been at home with three successive away games giving us a league defeat and a win with progress in the FA Vase sandwiched in between. Our 0-5 win at Daisy Hill was the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, remarkable as we were both founder members of the league 30 years
ago. The win saw the lads play some excellent football and score some cracking goals and the reward for victory is a home tie against Parkgate FC of the Northern Counties East League on Saturday 13th October. It will be Parkgates second visit to Edge Green Street as they knocked out our landlords Ashton Town 0-2 in the last round. Last Saturday saw a Jekyll and Hyde performance with a non-descript first half at Stone Dominoes seeing us trail to a goal after just 61 seconds. We never really seemed to get going and had new keeper Lee Novak to thank for keeping us in the game with fine saves either side of half time. The second stop seemed to jolt his team-mates into action and goals from Brian Hatton, Carl Osman and Ste Edwards secured three vital points. Our midweek fixture at Runcorn Linnets fell foul of the horrendous weather thats hit the country and as I write these notes (Wednesday evening) I wonder if theyll see the light of day! If we have beaten the weather we can expect another tough encounter as Runcorn Town look to continue with their excellent start to life in the NWCFL - last season they excelled narrowly losing out on the title which went down to the last day of the campaign. Although theyve had some mixed results so far they will no doubt be in the pack come next April! Dont forget our 500+ Club Draw will be made following todays encounter. Entries cost 1 per number - please see any committee member for details. Our other forthcoming fundraiser is a Sportsmans Evening at St Helens Cricket Club on Saturday 3rd November. Tickets are 20 with guest speaker Howard Kendall and comedian Frankie Allen, plus a hot pot supper, raffles, etc Enjoy the game and dont forget to join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and the St Helens Town Man of the Match Presentation. Double success for Town . . . St Helens Towns trip to Stone Dominoes last Saturday proved to be a double success with the club recording a 1-3 league victory and the clubs Under 8s earning a 3-4 win against their Stone Dominoes counterparts. The St Helens Town youngsters made the trip south following an invitation from Stone with both teams accompanying the senior teams on to the pitch for the respect handshakes at the start of the game. The Town Juniors play in the Rainhill and St Helens Mini-Soccer League had have recently started their second season having been together as Under 7s last term. Team coach Tom Howden said, All the players were excited about the visit to Stone Dominoes and really enjoyed coming onto the pitch with the players prior to the game and taking part in the game against our hosts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stone for inviting us and for their hospitality on the day and say what an excellent set-up they have at Wellbeing Park. The St Helens Town Under 8s team last Saturday were George Howden, Lewis Thorpe, Reece Boadey, Tom MacDonald, Tyler Bickerstaffe, Seb Kemp, Austin Ashcroft and Oliver Glover. With Oliver (3) and George (1) scoring the Town goals.

A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton A and Liverpool A and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.
Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that
league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The clubs major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive Hall of Fame, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy ONeil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixtons decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Towns ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Towns ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town Youth in Action . . . Lancaster City Youth 1-2 St Helens Town Youth Town Youth travelled to Lancaster City in the NW Youth Alliance, the first few minutes saw both teams trying to control the midfield. Town took an early lead when a quick throw by Highton was superbly flicked on by Dunne for Walker who drove into the area and hit a great shot which the keeper could only parry, with Laird reacting sharply to stroke the ball home into an empty net. The game opened up with Lancaster equalising shortly afterwards, a defensive mix up alowing the Lancaster player to calmly lob McBain in the Town goal. Both teams were playing good football with chances being creat-ed at either end. After 30 mins Town suffered an injury blow when Dunne was caught heavily by a defender, resulting in him being taken to hospital. With McKenna replacing Dunne up front, Town settled back down after some pressure from the home team, going in at half time deservedly level. The second half continued as the first half ended, both teams trying to play football and win control of midfield. Town then suffered a further injury blow with Bradbury being taken off to be replaced by Vaughton who slotted into defence with skipper Joe Smith moving to centre midfield. Lancaster enjoyed a good 10 minute spell and should have scored but for an outstanding double save from McBain, this lifted the team and they battled hard to stay in the game. Town then enjoyed some possession down both flanks and came back into the game. With one minute of normal time left, Town broke away with McKenna playing Walker through who fired his shot across goal with the defender deflecting it over the keeper into the goal. All the players celebrated in front of their fans in the stand, a great sight to see. With 4 minutes of injury time, Lancaster threw every-thing at Town, coming close to equalising and then Town again breaking away with McKenna unlucky not to make it 3-1. The final whistle sounded and Town were overjoyed, a great game played in a great spirit

Stone Dominoes v St Helens Town . . . Saturday 22nd September 2012 North West Counties League, Premier Division Stone Dominoes 1-3 St Helens Town It was a game of two halves this afternoon as Town turned in an awful first half performance but upped their game in the second period to secure all three points. The game got off to the worst possible start for Town as a home raid down the right saw Liam Kerrigan get to the byline too easily and his cut back reached the unmarked Arron Johns he scuffed his shot but this aided his effort to loop over Lee Novak into the net with 61 seconds on the clock. After a quarter of an hour Carl Osman advanced towards goal before finding Ste Edwards who was closed down by the home stopper who spread himself well to block the strikers effort and avert the danger. The next real chance came after half an hour when Osman floated a free kick from the left into the box and Greg Harrison rose to send a flicked headed effort goalwards which Phil Bruce turned over the bar for a corner which came to nothing. As the half drew to a close Stone almost doubled their lead, a goalmouth scramble saw an initial effort blocked by Novak in the visitors goal before a second effort from Johns was touched onto the bar by the Town stopper. The final chance of the half fell to the visitors a Shaun Judge released Edwards with a long ball and the striker played in Osman on the edge of the area but his effort went just over the bar. Novak was on hand again not long after the restart to deny the hosts as Josh Rowley collected a through ball and took advantage of space allowed to him by the Town defence to advanced but his effort was blocked by the legs of the stopper This looked to be the turning point in the contest as the visitors responded to this scare by taking control of the contest. Judge released Edwards with an excellent ball and the striker saw his effort deflected behind by Daniel Counter. Town drew themselves level on 57 minutes when Osman played in Edwards who with his back to goal turned well before firing an effort towards goal which Bruce pushed away the loose ball was collected by Brian Hatton on the left, he looked to be at quite an acute angle but the veteran powered an effort hard

. . . Match Report and Photos and low into the right hand corner of the net. On the hour Town skipper Osman pinged a free kick off the crossbar with the home stopper beaten before another attack saw Edwards released on the left of the area he got to the byline drawing the keeper before squaring to Scott McNair the goalmouth was full of players but he chose not to shoot and picked out Osman who lofted an effort over the masses ranks into the net to put Town into the lead. The visitors effectively secured the victory on 75 minutes when an incisive ball from Lee Crompton put Edwards 1on1 with Bruce in the Stone goal and he rounded the stopper before applying an excellent finish finding the bottom left hand corner of the net to put the game beyond the hosts. In the closing stages a fine flowing move saw Chris Williams find Greg Harrison on the left wing and the full back turned the ball onto substitute Andy Newcombe who went on a mazy run past a trio of defenders before shooting just over the bar from the edge of the area. So a second half recovery saw Town return to Merseyside with the spoils from an important contest before two tricky encounters against Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday and Runcorn Town on Saturday. North West Counties Club News . . . A two minute round of applause to mark the real truth being revealed about w h a t h a p p e n e d a t Hillsborough took place prior to AFC Liverpool's home game against Glossop North
End last Saturday. Both teams walked onto the pitch to the sounds of You'll Never Walk Alone, with captains River Humphreys of AFC Liverpool and Kelvin Lugsden of Glossop carrying a Hillsborough Justice Campaign banner between them, as AFC Liverpool marked their first home game since the release of the findings published by the Hillsborough Independent Panel.
Following the round of applause, which began at 3.06 pm and was impeccably observed by both sets of fans, players and officials, flowers were presented to Debi McMillan of the HJC by both AFC Liverpool chairman Chirs Stirrup and Glossop North End secretary Stewart Taylor. These flowers were laid at the Hillsborough memorial at Anfield prior to Liverpool's home game against Manchester United. I personally, and AFC Liverpool, are all very proud at what this club stands for, said AFC Liverpool board member Alan Harrison, who organised the pre match ceremony. We all support Debi and the HJC, as well as the Hillsborough Families Support Group and Hope for Hillsborough, as they now seek justice as the truth has finally come out. Glossop North End's Kelvin Lugsden and AFC Liverpool's River Humphreys are pictured above, leading their teams on to the pitch with the HJC banner. Photo courtesy of David Williams.

North West Counties Club News . . . Formby's Real Ale Treat Real ale fans will have the opportunity to sample a beer that may be unfamiliar to them when they visit Formby this season. The bar at Altcar Road is now stocking real ale from a brewery in Hertfordshire, and it was the firms name - Red Squirrel Brewing Company that first attracted the clubs attention. Formby Programme Editor Merrick Cork explained how the story unfolded. Our club secretary, my brother Adrian, is as partial to a pint of proper ale as myself. One
of the things we look forward to on travelling to a new ground is seeing if there's a decent beer on. Groundsharing has its drawbacks but one of the advantages is the large turnover at the bar, meaning at Rochdale Town's Mayfield Sports Centre they provide a fine pint, and we cheerily salute them as the only North West Counties side to date who've served us real ale. Over the summer Adrian was in a pub and saw they had Hopfest, a beer by a brewery called Red Squirrel. With the principal focus of Formby's civic pride being its population of the rare rodent, and from that its place on our club crest and nickname, he had to have a sup. "It's a fabulously flavourful summer ale, so he tweeted a picture of the pump sign. The brewery spotted that and asked if we wanted to stock it. The short answer was yes, but we knew it wasn't that simple. Cask ales will go off a few days after opening, and with a club only having two hours of sale time before waiting a week it's a non-starter to get a 72 pint cask in for a match where only 60 people will come through the gate. Red Squirrel is a small independent microbrewery based in Potten End, Hertfordshire and, as a grassroots organisation ourselves, we like to support small businesses. They also donate to red squirrel conservation which, combined with the gloriousness of the beer itself, made us determined to find a way to make it work. Red Squirrel do five litre minicasks, they're a giant can that looks like the old Party Sevens from the 1970s but mercifully they don't contain Watneys. Instead they have live beer. They don't come particularly cheap, and then there's the delivery charge on top, so we only break even if we sell eight out of the almost-nine pints inside, but it's not about the money. We love the squirrel tie in, and nothing beats standing in the doorway of the bar on a late summer Saturday watching the footy with a chilled golden pint. We've done it for the last two home games and made it cover its costs, and the worst that would happen is us having to buy the leftovers to take home, which I assure you wouldn't be a problem, so we'll keep doing it. They do some dark beers for the winter months that we're really looking forward to as well! NWCFL Leading Goal Scorers - Ratio
