Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Colne. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. Since I wrote my last editorial we have had a change in management of the first team after Ian Granite stepped down due to business and family commitments. Ian had done a tremendous job to get us to the stage we are at over the last eighteen months or so and it would be remiss of me not to place on record the thanks of everyone at the club for his tireless work in his tenure. Ian Price and Paul Jones have had a good start to their reign and hopefully they can build on the foundations Ian has laid. The last time we were here at Brocstedes Park to take on Cammell Laird in the Liverpool Senior Cup and we continued our poor knock out record exiting our fourth and final cup competition at the first time of asking. We weren’t at the races in the first half and our higher ranking opponents made up pay for this by netting twice in the first half before adding a third in the opening stages of the second period to virtually put the game beyond us. We then pulled a goal back through Ste Milne and it looked to be game on when Milne was felled and Andy Gillespie stepped up to take the spot kick but the visiting stopper was it’s equal and despite further Town pressure the final score saw Town go down 3-1, incidentally the same score as the previous three contests against Lairds and the Birkenhead club must be a bogey side for Town as were are still to avoid defeat against them in the five meetings over the years. We then went on a bit of a “Road Trip” as we first made the trip to Manchester to visit the side top of the form table West Didsbury and Chorlton. The game was a close contest with neither side creating too much in the opening period but the difference between the two sides at the interval was an excellent strike from Andy Gillespie after some good work from the central midfield duo of Danny Owens and Nathan Parish. After the interval the hosts stepped up their game and deservedly levelled when a shot thundered home off the bottom of the cross bar before another well struck effort this time from Nathan Parish, his second in three matches saw Town take all the points back to Merseyside. We then made the relatively short trip to Wigan to take on basement outfit Wigan Robin Park, despite a very scrappy opening quarter of an hour Town broke the deadlock when a blocked shot broke to Mike Sykes-Wright and made no mistake firing the loose ball home. The lead was extended on the half hour mark when the home stopper dropped a corner and Andy Gillespie was on hand to poke the ball home and just before the break Connor Sanderson fired home a third to round off a comfortable half for the visitors. The second period saw Town sit back a bit on their advantage and when the first goal of the half came for the Robins they moved up a gear and looked dangerous on the counter attack as their hosts looked to pull another back to set up a grandstand finish. It was however to be the visitors who scored again as Gillespie took his tally for the season to eleven from twelve games to secure the spoils and lift Town into 7th position. Ian Price will know that we will be in for a tough game this afternoon against a Colne side who are also under newish management and the lads will need to be in top form if we are to extend the unbeaten league run to 14 matches. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . The ground was enclosed for the first time in 1975 when Colne Dynamoes joined the Lancashire Combination. At this time the area was shared with cricket, and grading difficulties arose when the Lancs Combination became the NW Counties League in 1982 as the club was unable to comply. The next three years however, saw rapid development, with three covered areas, new dressing rooms, and floodlights all in place by 1985. A new stand was built the following year and in 1987/88 Dynamoes won the FA Vase and also took the League title, and with it promotion to

Division One of the Northern Premier League. Further developments followed as the club became full-time, and won promotion as champions in 1988/89. A third successive championship followed but despite all of the developments Holt House was still unable to meet Conference grading requirements, and the club folded during the close season. Fortunately Colne Royal British Legion FC & Rock Rovers FC took over the ground, until Colne Legion resigned from the East Lancs League in 1995. The newly formed Colne FC became the grounds third residents on their formation in 1996. Colne F.C. were formed in January 1996, by a group of like-minded people under the wing of Mr Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non league football, and arrangements were made for a new club to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used by the Dynamoes, in the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Colne FC’s first ever competitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich and the result ended in a 1-0 defeat. The team was then managed by Keith Mason, but after his resignation soon after, Denzil Hart was appointed to the hot seat. His first game was a 6-0 defeat away at Ashton Town, but just two games later Colne FC recorded their first ever victory thumping Bacup Borough 5-2. The highlight of the season coming when the reserves won the BEP Cup at Clitheroe’s Shawbridge ground. The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited, but in September 2000 manager Hart left the club by mutual agreement. Player John Lister was placed in temporary charge and his appointment was made permanent a month later. Lister learned lessons from this campaign and in 2001/02 finished 14th . In the summer of 2002 James Webster took control of the club, to become the youngest chairman in the league at the age of 24. James was a player at the club with plenty of experience and along with his father who was vice chairman, had a strong desire to see the current side emulate the success of its predecessors. Season 2002/03 started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as Manager. Paul Lynch took over as manager and the improvements continued, but in August 2003, Paul was offered the position of manager at Unibond side Rossendale United and subsequently left. Webster responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager as well as player Gary Rishton as his number 2. Nigel had played for the Dynamoes, being in the FA Vase winning team and had experience of management at local rivals Nelson. Season 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after a successful cup run, but ended the season 10 points clear in Division two, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games. They completed the double by winning the Division Two Trophy 1 – 0 over Great Harwood. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase which saw them reach the Semi finals before bowing out 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. As the season progressed

. . . Colne FC attendances started to rise as the local population realised they were no longer the whipping boys of the league, and the infamous RED ARMY was formed. Colne took little time in adjusting to life in the First Division, another FA Vase run and a creditable 10th place was secured in 2004/05 Consolidation has followed and the current team has achieved Colne FC’s highest ever league position Their 2007-08 season final position of 5th is the highest they have so far reached. The club has recognised the need to provide continuity and as such has begun a program of development, commencing with the first youth team who reached the final of the Blackburn league in 2003/04 season then becoming the reserve team competing in the NWCFL Reserve division for the last couple of years. Winning the Cup double in their first season and reaching the semi final of the Hospital Cup the following year. All the while steadily improving and at the same time providing new talent for the first team to harvest. Season 2009/10 started slowly with the team languishing 5th bottom of the Vodkat league at Xmas. However an amazing run of one league defeat in 2010 saw the Reds climb to finish a respectable 8th in the league with a very youthful squad. Season 2010/11 provided further improvements in the fortunes of the club. The reserve team themselves well in the Galaxy Lancashire league reaching the West division cup final. The first team had a successful season finishing in a creditable 5th place in the league. The squad from 2010/11 are available again and manager Nigel Coates and his team will be looking to further enhance the clubs reputation. Season 2011/12 produced another consistent campaign with a creditable 8th position finish, given long term injuries to a number of key players. The year saw the emergence of a number of young players from the reserve team make their mark in the first team. Season 2012/13 produced another competitive season with a creditable 8th place finish given the changeover in squad players. Manager Nigel Coates, approaching his 10th year in charge of the Reds, decided to step down in October 2013 and he was replaced by former player Steve Cunningham who has been assistant manager at Padiham FC.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Colne FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along

with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. We welcome back former Town player Steve Cunningham who has recently taken over the managerial reigns at Colne after a very successful stint alongside Steve Wilkes at Padiham - of course we wish him all the best but not for today’s encounter. Our last home game saw Town exit the Liverpool Senior Cup with Cammell Laird winning 3-1 on the night. Connor Sanderson scored Town’s consolation in a game where we failed to get started until our visitors had gone 0-3 up. The lads gave it a good go in the last twenty minutes, dominating play and chances as well as missing a penalty. The Senior Cup game was our first game following the departure of Ian Granite and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ian for all his hard work on behalf of the club over the past eighteen months. Hopefully he will keep in touch and we’ll see him at a few games when family and business commitments allow.

The new management team of Ian Price and Paul Jones have had a great start with back to back away wins which have taken us to 34 points at the midway stage. Match reports for the games at West Didsbury and Wigan Robin Park are in this afternoon’s programme. Many thanks to Jim McDonald and Zenith Global IT Solutions who are today’s Executive Match Sponsors - it’s brilliant to have them supporting the club. We have now finished our mid-week programme until later in the season and next up for Town is a trip to Silsden next Saturday followed by a home game against Winsford United on Saturday 21st December, kick off 3pm. We held a minute’s silence at our last home game in memory of Club President and former player Bill Foulkes, tonight’s programme contains a tribute to Bill and our condolences go to his wife and family. Enjoy the game.

Town v Cammell Laird . . . St Helens Town 1-3 Cammell Laird Liverpool Senior Cup 1st Round - Tuesday 26th November 2013 Town went out of the Liverpool Senior Cup, losing 3-1 at home to Cammell Laird, last Tuesday night and it was another case of “so near yet so far.” Despite a long unbeaten run in the NW Counties Premier League, St. Helens have now exited all four knock-out competitions at the first stage, leaving

them to concentrate on consolidating their position in the top half of the league table. Cammell Laird, from the Evostik League North, one step above St. Helens Town in the non-league pyramid, played for the most part, in a manner befitting a side from a league above. They led by three clear goals early in the second half but, as in their opening league game of the season against Norton United, Town mounted a fight back and had Andy Gillespie converted a penalty which would have made the score 3-2, they might have gone on to draw level or even win the tie in the later stages. Paul Foy opened the scoring for Lairds in the fifth minute, a goalmouth scramble leading to a rebounded shot and the forward poked home from close in. Town had a chance to level three minutes later, but Nathan Parish could only pull his shot wide of the post. Andy Gillespie and Adam Storey each had opportunities but were wide of the target before Lairds increased their lead, Foy netting again from a cross which was whipped in from the right wing. Mason Ryan’s goal bound shot was blocked on the half-hour and, three minutes later, Storey had the best chance of the half, but keeper Mike Langley took the ball off the striker’s toes. Two goals down at the interval, Town soon found themselves three behind, full-back Chris Reilly hitting a pile-driver of a free-kick past Ciaran Gibson in the home goal on 50 minutes. Cammell Laird were well on top at this stage and there was a further setback for St. Helens as Storey had to leave the field with an injury. However, Ste Milne proved a more than adequate replacement and within minutes, he pulled a goal back in some style, bursting through 40 yards out to fire past the Lairds’ keeper. The introduction of more fresh legs saw Neil Weaver and Adam Owens replace Connor Sanderson and Mason Ryan and Town saw their chance to step up a gear. Danny Owens went close shortly afterwards and then the home side were awarded a penalty on 71 minutes but, although Gillespie struck the ball well, Langley pulled off a magnificent save to deny

Town’s leading scorer. A goal at that stage would have brought the visitors back within catching distance but, far from being disappointed, Town pressed on and Milne (twice), Lee Crompton and Parish all had good chances as the

visitors dug deep to maintain their two goal lead to secure a place with the big boys in the semi-finals.

West Didsbury v Town . . . West Didsbury & Chorlton 1-2 St Helens Town Saturday 30th November 2013

St. Helens Town turned in a terrific performance to complete a league double over West Didsbury & Chorlton at Brookburn Road on Saturday, against tough opposition who had themselves the previous week completed a double over NW Counties league leaders Runcorn Town. It was Town’s first away game for eight weeks and the 2-1 victory stretched their unbeaten league run to 12 games and

left the club in ninth position ahead of the midweek game at Wigan Robin Park. Five of the eight clubs ahead of St. Helens in the table have played more games than Town, so there is scope for further progress. The victory was the more remarkable, coming at the end of a difficult week which saw the departure (for non-football reasons) of manager Ian Granite, the midweek defeat by Cammell Laird in the Liverpool Senior Cup and the absence of key men Shaun Judge and Adam Storey through injury, but caretaker manager Ian Price capped a great performance by scooping first prize in the club’s monthly draw for November. West Didsbury opened the game on the front foot but Town weathered the early pressure to go close to opening the scoring in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, through Danny Owens and Nathan Parish. With the visitors now in the ascendency, Ste Milne was chopped down on the edge of the West Didsbury box and Connor Sanderson’s well-hit free kick was well saved by Paul Hughes in the home goal. Sanderson himself headed just wide on 35 minutes, then Danny Owens had a great chance two minutes later. With half-time approaching, Town took a deserved lead when Sanderson intercepted a home pass near the corner of the box and threaded a great ball through to Andy Gillespie who finished confidently from close range. The second half again saw the home side take the early initiative and Matt Greenwood fizzed a shot only inches over the bar in the opening exchange. As time went on, the home side put in some heavy, late challenges and a number of Town players were lucky not to be seriously injured. West Didsbury equalised on 67 minutes when Anthony Potts scored with a slick drive from the left-hand corner of the box. The remaining minutes were an end-to-end dogfight and it really was anybody’s game. Gillespie launched a missile of a strike which was blocked by a defender three minutes later. Both teams had opportunities and Ciaran Gibson did well to keep the home side at bay. The winning goal went to St. Helens and it was a beauty. A pass along the dead-ball line found Ste Milne in front of goal and he turned on the proverbial sixpence before finding Parish with a well-placed delivery and the midfielder let fly from 20 yards, giving Hughes no chance. All-in-all it was a great all-round performance with every player doing his bit to give Ian Price and Paul Jones a perfect start to team management. Town return to home territory on Saturday, with a game against Colne, at the earlier than usual kick-off time of 2pm at Brocstedes Park.

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last

season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access

AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

. . . Our Charity Partner players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.”

Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official

charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a a Race Night on Saturday 26th October and Comedy & Curry Night on Saturday 7th December. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at [email protected] Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

The club were saddened by the news of the death of former player Bill Foulkes who passed away last week. Bill joined the club from Whiston Boys Club and played a number of games for Town during the 1949/50 season, under the captaincy of Harry McCann and alongside Billy Twist in the defence. He signed for Manchester United in March 1950 for the princely sum of £10. Born at Clock Face on 5th January 1932, William Anthony Foulkes began in junior football at Whiston. He was a right back of obvious talent, big and strong, due in no part to his job as a miner at Lea Green Colliery. Sport was in his blood, as both his grandfather and father had played rugby for Saints. Indeed, his grandfather had captained Saints and became an England international and Bill proudly followed later in his footsteps, although in a different code.

Although he signed professional at Old Trafford under Matt Busby in August 1951, Bill did not play in United’s Championship season, but made his debut against Liverpool on 13th December 1952. Remarkably, he continued to work full-time at Lea Green Colliery, catching the train from the nearby station to Manchester after the end of his shift to attend evening sessions and he only finished at the pit after he won his one and only England cap against Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast, on 2nd October 1954. He also appeared twice for England Under-23s the same season.

. . . Bill Foulkes RIP As one of the legendary Busby Babes, Bill won back to back Championship medals with United in 1955/56 and 1956/57, he was an FA Cup in the 1963 Wembley final against Leicester City and he went on to win further Championship medals in 1964/65 and 1966/67 and played in the 1968 European Cup triumph over Benfica at Wembley. In all, he played in 563 league games and a total of 685 matches for United, then a club record only recently beaten by Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs. Bill was a survivor of the Munich air crash in February 1958. Along with Harry Gregg, he helped a number of the injured to safety from the burning plane. Eight of his team-mates lost their lives, together with club officials and a number of other passengers, including journalists who had flown with the team to cover the European Cup tie in Belgrade. Bill took over the captaincy of the team from that point, a position he held until 1966. He also switched successfully to centre-half. Remarkably, he played in every match in that fateful 1957/58 season, a feat he repeated in 1959/60, 1963/64 and the Championship season 1964/65. Bill’s final game was against Southampton on 16th August 1969. After his playing days were over, Bill was a youth team coach at Old Trafford between 1970 and 1975. He briefly managed Witney Town, before his career took him to the USA, Norway and Japan. As a coach for the Manchester FA, he particularly enjoyed conducting Japanese visitors around the Old Trafford ground, being fluent in the Japanese language, having learned it during his four years in the Far East. Bill brought a Japanese Universities side to play Town at Knowsley Road over a decade ago and having re-ignited his association with Town, became our Honorary President, and was later joined by Bert Trautmann. Our condolences go to Bill's family and friends. Pictured opposite St Helens Town AFC 1950-51 Lancashire Combination Champions. Wigan RP v Town . . . Walk in the Park for Town Tuesday 3rd December 2013 Wigan Robin Park 1-4 St Helens Town

St. Helens Town recorded a comprehensive 4-1 win at Wigan Robin Park on Tuesday night that was every bit as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. Town reached the half-way point of their NW Counties league season, repeating the same score they ran up in the home fixture in August and they were barely stretched by the Premier Division’s bottom club. The game marked thirteen matches unbeaten in the league –

seven wins and six draws – putting St. Helens up to seventh place in the table on 34 points, only four points behind the total they achieved over the whole of last season. Town did not need to be at their best, so poor was the Robin Park defence in the first half. Michael Sykes-Wright opened the scoring against his former club in the 16th minute, the home defence struggling to clear the ball out of their penalty area and the Town midfielder poked home a rebound. The second goal was similarly scrappy, but they all count. This time it was leading scorer Andy Gillespie’s (pictured) turn to prod home at close range from a corner on the half-hour. St. Helens rubbed further salt in the wound four minutes from half-time. Danny Owens made a run along the edge of the 18-yard box, before finding Connor Sanderson unmarked on the left-hand side of the field and he hit the goal of the game from 25 yards, to send the visitors in for the break three goals to the good. The game was effectively over at half-time but Town took their foot off the gas early in the second half, Robin Park hitting the post on 60 minutes before James Edgar pulled a goal back after 68 minutes. Although they still looked comfortable, St. Helens had to withstand a brief onslaught from the home club and, in a spell which saw two Town players booked for mistimed challenges, another goal for the Wigan side might have proved significant. When the next goal did come, however, it went to Town. Six minutes from time, a cross from the right-hand side saw Gillespie steal a march on the sleepy home defence and the young star centre-forward hit home from close range to wrap up the game at 4-1. There won’t be many games as easy as this for Town and the run-in towards the end of the year with Colne at home, Silsden away, Winsford United at home and the derby away to Ashton Athletic on Boxing Day should present tougher opportunities to test the young Town side as they mount their challenge to join the leading bunch at the right end of the table. How things have changed in twelve months!

St Helens Town Reserves The Reserves under the stewardship of Alan Gillespie and John Whelan recorded a fine away win at Ford Motors (0-1) last weekend, a ‘worldie’ from Danny Norris just before the break was all that separated the two in-form sides. The win kept Town six points clear at the top of the West Cheshire League Division 3. Today sees them in LCFA Junior Cup 4th Round action as they host Hale Reserves at Windleshaw Road.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with

most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted

company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

St Helens Town News . . . Following the resignation of First Team manager Ian Granite, St Helens Town have announced the appointment of Ian Price (Manager) and Paul Jones (Assistant) as the caretaker management team until further notice. John McKiernan said: “I am absolutely gutted at the news and I made it clear that we did not want him to go. Unfortunately his business and family commitments have been suffering and he has obviously spent some time coming to this decision. I believe Ian is as disappointed as we are but felt he had no choice. Non-league football doesn’t pay the bills and you can’t recover lost time with a young family. “I would like to place on record the club’s appreciation for Ian’s considerable time and effort over the past season and a half. He’s been excellent to work with and a good friend to the club, something I hope will continue for a long time. “Ian arrived at Town following a nightmare summer for the club which saw two failed managerial appointments. He brought a measure of security as well as a whole new squad of players, and we saw them battle to ensure we avoided relegation last term. This season has seen the club have its best start for a number of seasons and with the team unbeaten in 11 league games, in the top half of the Premier Division Ian can leave knowing the club is in a great place. Ian Granite said: “I would just like to put on record my thanks to all the committee for their support and giving me such a fantastic to manage such a good club and to Ian and Paul for all their help and support in the last two years. I’d like thank the club for the support given to me and I am sure I'll be down to watch the lads when I get time. I have met some great people at the club, people who now I class as friends. The club are now looking to move forward with Ian Price and Paul Jones installed as the caretaker management team. John McKiernan said: “I’ve spoken with both Ian and Paul over the past few days and we are all happy that this is the right move at this moment in time. While disappointed with Ian Granite’s departure, we have had get on with the job at hand and that is ensuring we build on the start the lads have given the club this season. “The club’s committee felt that a degree of continuity will help us through the next few weeks and the duo will receive our full support. Ian and Paul have been part of the first team set-up for the past two seasons and have worked closely with Ian Granite so we are hoping that we continue to move in the right direction”.

Back to Business . . . Well, its been altogether more settled this past 7 days at Town. Following the recent resignations of First Team Manager Ian Granite and the Reserve Team Manager Nick Robinson in unrelated circumstances, the club committee felt that with both

teams in rich veins of form, that continuity was the key. With this is mind, our Youth Team management duo of Alan Gillespie and John Whelan have taken control of the reserve team for the foreseeable future and in all likelihood until the end of the current campaign, and First Team Assistant Manager Ian Price has been promoted to a Caretaker Manager role with the opportunity to make the job his own outright. Last Saturday saw the first team return to league action for the first time since the departure of Ian Granite and under the guidance of Ian Price the lads produced an excellent performance to win three points away from home in what could have been a real banana skin against a resurgent West Didsbury and Chorlton. The momentum from last Saturday’s excellent away win was then carried into Tuesday nights away fixture against a much improved Wigan Robin Park side, but an outstanding first half display and a comfortable second half performance saw us run out 4-1 victors and seal two away wins in four days. Recent results have lifted us to 7th in the table and today’s

visitors Colne sit just one point behind us in 9th position going into today’s encounter. With today’s kick off brought forward to 2pm, I hope we will have another three points in the bag come 4pm today and the club can move into the busy Christmas period safely nestled above half way and in relative safety by the midway point of the season after consecutive relegation dogfights in recent years. I would just like to take the opportunity in today’s programme notes to offer my sincerest thanks to my good friend and outgoing manager Ian Granite for all his

time and effort over the past eighteen months. Ian rebuilt the squad and continued until his departure to make great strides in moving the club forward. Ian leaves with all our best wishes and safe in the knowledge that the club is in a far better place now than when he arrived, and his hard work and effort has played a big part in the clubs improvement. Ian Price and his assistants are now tasked with continuing the good work and maintaining our progress, and I’m extremely confident the club remains in very safe hands with Pricey at the helm. Enjoy today’s game and have a safe journey home afterwards
