The Friends Fireworks Extravaganza is almost here and we are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Sunday from 4pm at the school. If you havent bought your tickets already, I advise you to get them now from the school office to take advantage of the early bird price, as adult tickets will go up to £10 on the door (all St Faiths pupils are free, and tickets for other children are £2). The professional fireworks display this year is set to be amazing, so we hope you can join us. There will be plenty to see and do at the event, and the children will be able to purchase glo-toys and other pocket money treats. We will also be firing up the BBQ, serving fresh, locally sourced hamburgers and sausages (with delicious sauces kindly donated by Zafron Foods), as well as home-made vegetarian chilli. Fresh teas, coffees and warming mulled wine will also be available, but please bring your own drinks mugs as the Friends have pledged to reduce our usage of plastics as much as possible. St Faiths reusable cups (which are made of bamboo and are 100% recyclable) can also be purchased from the refreshment tent. In the (hopefully unlikely) event that the fireworks will not be able to go ahead, due to adverse weather etc., we will arrange an alternative evening, so make sure you hold on to your tickets. We will do our best to notify people in advance if this happens, but I recommend keeping an eye on the St Faiths website and Facebook Page. Many thanks and have a fabulous weekend! At St Faiths Prep, we are very lucky to be situated in a friendly, small village and to have spectacular views of the countryside from our school playing field and classrooms. We believe it is important for our pupils to learn more about our local area and develop an increased awareness of the world they live in. The Year 1 children had a wonderful day out at the Ploughing Match last half term and have shown a genuine interest in farming ever since. Fortunately for us, we have several farming families within our school family and we were delighted when Mr Solley, one of our parents here at St Faiths, agreed to visit to talk about his life as a farmer. The children found out lots of new information about what happens at the Solley Farm and at various other local farms. They learnt about growing and harvesting crops such as wheat, potatoes and asparagus. They were mesmerised by drone footage that provided an amazing perspective on what farming looks like from above and fascinated by the jobs that farming machinery can do. Did you know that some motorised farming equipment can be controlled by satellite these days? Every child prepared a question to ask Mr Solley; he was really impressed by their level of interest and was able to answer all the questions he was asked. It was a rare treat to have Mr Solley come in and talk about something so important to him and his family, and Year 1 were very pleased to host him. With cold and wet weather please make sure your child attends school with winter regulation coat and hat every day. Scarves are optional but must be regulation too. We are a school which embraces outdoor life but it is important that the children are appropriately equipped. Many thanks for your continued co-operation in this regard.

Sport Report

Sport is about providing support to those who aspire to compete at the highest level, whilst offering opportunity and encouragement to those pupils who simply want to enjoy their sport and physical activity. At St Faith’s Prep a range of sports are offered to our pupils. The Focus this week has been on Football and Hockey. Read our full report here. www.stfaithsprep.com.

Woodland Explorers—Reception

Bonjour! Je m’appelle Herisson Extraordinaire. My travels have taken me to many interesting places across the world but I have decided to settle here at St Faith’s where I have been made to feel so welcome by the friendly Reception children. They kindly invited me to join in their weekly French session where I met the fantastique Madame Stokes and her friend Talkative Toad. Talkative Toad is a very interesting character who loves to chitter and chatter away. We both really enjoyed learning some new words in French as well as singing songs with our puppets Leo and Lulu and listening to a story. Bravo!

4M Assembly—School Rules On Wednesday 4M delivered an explosive assembly to the whole school on the History of Fireworks. It began with a talk of treason and The Gunpowder Plot, with a royal appearance from King James! Harpriya, Krishna and Yuthushya, sparkled in their traditional Sikh and Hindu costumes, while telling the school how they each celebrate Diwali. After this, the children explained the Firework Code and how to keep safe on Bonfire Night.

The final part of the assembly introduced our new school rules, which will keep us safe and healthy at all times, whether in school, at home or online.

French in the Upper School

Fat toads, rats tails, cat tongues, bats, and many more ghoulish but interesting words have helped Year 6 develop their French ‘vocabulaire’. Using Halloween as the theme, they have been chanting their witches’ spell to develop pronunciation, spot rhyming sounds and spark the imagination. It was lovely to see some children adapt the poem, exchanging nouns or adjectives and produce original ideas. Year 5 are using our new Language Angels resource to talk, read, and write about pets. This is fun, interactive and tailored for all abilities which makes everyone feel more engaged and successful. Our aim is to encourage short presentations to the class, to carry out a class pet survey and play lots of games along the way!

Guess which teacher describes herself as a dinosaur?

It’s Mrs Gibbs! This makes her the perfect teacher for this term’s Year 6 work on prehistoric Britain. So far they have enjoyed reading ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King and completed lots of work based on the book, including making comparisons between different television adaptations. During History and English lessons, the children have discovered more about life in the Stone Age and collaborated brilliantly to make some entertaining photo stories about the discovery of Lascaux Cave. At the end of half-term they drew all their knowledge together and produced some beautiful information pages which you can see displayed in their classrooms. Next week they will be visiting Dover Museum where they will be able to handle some genuine prehistoric artefacts, admire the

Bronze Age boat and even have a go at making one out of clay. After this amazing cross-curricular experience, coming back to the twenty-first century may be something of a disappointment but at least they won’t have to go chasing dinner down the road with a spear and will have rather more comfortable sleeping arrangements!

Target Reached…with distinction! When Mr Groves arrived at St Faith’s, he immediately wanted to develop the music department and had a dream to have Grade 5 pupils within the school. His target was reached this week when Krish Parthiban received the results of his Grade 5 singing exam. Not only had he passed but he had done so in style – with a distinction! There are other year 6 singers due to take Grade 5 later in the year and some instrumentalists with ambitions to join the Grade 5 club too. With lots of Grade 2s and 3s happening lower down the school, there are plenty more pupils who could achieve this excellent standard by the time they leave. Keep practising, everyone!

ABRSM EXAMS We recently hosted the ABRSM for another successful day's examining. Exams took place in the Music Room and the children performed to Gary Ryan, Assistant Head of Strings at the Royal College of Music. There was a collection of merits from Poppy Batchelor, Isabella Reppin and Darcey Fairclough-Jackson (all Grade 2) & Yasmin Amin and Evie Dove (Grade 1) who took a singing exam. Evelina Salvatori (Grade 2 flute) and Poppy Andrews (Grade 1 clarinet) took woodwind exams and also achieved a merit. Evelina had a busy day and also passed her Grade 2 piano (Grade 2 in two instruments). In addition, Mali Nicholls passed her Grade 2 saxophone exam and will now push on towards Grade 3. Aryan Bhide, Maisie Burrell, Jack Manser, Tom Mills, Arabella Porter and Holly Rooke all took their Prep Test in piano, together with Sylvie Brown who took her cornet Prep Test. Arabella also took her singing Prep Test. The Prep Test is an introduction to formal exams and these children will now be prepared for Grade 1 and beyond. Taking an exam is sometimes a hugely nerve-racking experience. It involves playing or singing pieces, performing scales and a sight-reading test, together with aural tests. Thank you to all the children's teachers (and parents!) and well done again to all these brilliant children!
