The Season of Advent The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christ-mas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event. Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. This does not mean that Advent is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor. The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbol-izes the penitential spirit. Religious traditions associated with Advent express all these themes.

The Doctr ine of the Immaculate Concept ion from The Catechism of the Catholic Church
490 To become the mother of the Savior, Mary "was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role." The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as "full of grace.” In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announce-ment of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace. 491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Concep-tion confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854:
The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her con-ception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, pre-served immune from all stain of original sin.
492 The "splendor of an entirely unique holiness" by which Mary is "enriched from the first instant of her conception" comes wholly from Christ: she is "redeemed, in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son.” The Father blessed Mary more than any other creat-ed person "in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places" and chose her "in Christ before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love.”

“God so loved the world that He sent His only Son” (John 3:16) The long awaited coming of Jesus is at last upon us as preparation gives way to celebration of the actual birth of our Lord Jesus. In December, Luke’s gospel for the Liturgy brings us through preparation, the Nativity and Jesus teaching the elders in the temple. As we hear the Gospel teaching of Jesus beginning His mission of our salvation, let our celebration of His birth always remind us that Jesus’ salvific mission reaches far beyond that Christmas Day over two-thousand years ago and continues to draw the world toward Him until the end of time. If you are looking for more ways to connect your life with your faith, please join us on Friday evenings in December from 7:30 pm to 9 pm in the Prayer Room of the Family Life Center. Hear Jesus teachings come alive in the Gospel. We will share God’s word, have live music of praise and worship and interces-sory prayers for healing and thanksgiving. Fellowship and light refreshments follow. December 7th “Prepare the way of the Lord.” December 14th “What then should we do to prepare?” December 21st “Blessed are you who believed.” December 28th “All who heard were astounded at His understanding.” Discussion topics at our December gatherings are from the Gospel of: Luke 3:1-6, 3:10-18, 1:39-45, 2;41-52 African Charismatic Prayer Group We meet every Friday from 7:30 p.m.—9:00 p.m. in room 8 of the Family Life Center (FLC). For more information please call Brother Tony at 562-612-9753. Thanks and God bless you. Lighthouse Talk of the Week Confession by Fr. Larry Richards Based upon his proven and powerful parish mission presen-tation, Fr. Larry Richards’ talk on Confession has become the #1 talk in North America dealing with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He is riveting, honest, humorous, very hu-man, and often touchingly gentle. Fr. Larry provides listen-ers with hope for a closer, healing relationship with Jesus Christ. Parishioner Comments: “I re-evaluated my entire way of living because it made me realize that I was not as close to God as I thought!” “Fr. Larry spoke so I could understand and relate to what he was saying. I was always afraid of going to confession as I didn't know what to say or how to express myself, but now I have a better understanding of confession.” Your generous donations to cover our cost will assure con-tinued availability of these wonderful resources!

The First Friday devotion arose from a private revelation to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque in the seventeenth century. The devotion involves participating in the Holy Mass and receiving Holy Communion on nine consec-utive first Fridays of the month. It is like a novena which is prayed over consecutive months rather than over consecutive days, and is offered for the particular intention of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. “Reparation” refers to the spiritual healing that is needed because of the effects of sin. The small penance we receive in confession is an act of reparation, that helps to repair the evil consequences of our unfaithfulness. We can make acts of reparation in other ways: through prayer, fasting, sacrifice and self-denial. In the Gospel, Jesus says that some demons “can only be driven out by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29). Jesus refers not only to literal demons, but also to the figurative demons of sin and the inclination to sin. Acts of rep-aration are powerful spiritual weapons that can drive away the influence of evil from ourselves and others. Uniting our prayers, works and sufferings to those of Jesus, we can make some reparation for our offenses and those of others. Because we ae members of Christ through Baptism, our offerings become part of the work of the Lord—His suffering and death—which was undertaken to make reparation for the sins of the world. St. Paul explained, “Now I rejoice in my suffering for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His Body, that is the Church” (Cf. Colossians 1:24; 2 Corinthians 1:5f; Ephesians 3:1, 13 ). What is lacking in the suffering of Christ? Only our participation. Through acts of reparation, we enter into the redemptive suffering of Christ, and in a certain sense, become co-redeemers through Him. First Friday Devotion Nine consecutive Fridays in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Our Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque (1647-1690), a French nun of the Visitation Order, and gave her the special task to spread devotion to His Most Sacred Heart at a time when religion was growing cold in the hearts of mankind. Jesus asked for special prayers and practices to make amends (reparation) for this great neglect to the proper reverence owed to God. For those who did this faithfully, he made what St. Margaret Mary referred to as the “Great Promise” which was the last and greatest of the Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
“I promise you in the unfathomable mercy of my heart that my omnipotent love will procure the grace of final penitence for all those who receive communion on nine successive first Fridays of the month; they will not die in my disfavor [the grace of final repentance], or without having received the sacraments, since my divine heart will be their sure refuge in the last moments of their life.”
Conditions to Fulfill the Devotion The specific conditions to receive the Great Promise of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are: 1. Receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive first Fridays of the month (this assumes that the person is in
a state of grace, having made a sacramental confession for any mortal sins prior to receiving commun-ion).
2. Have the intention, at least implicitly, of making reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for all the sinful-ness and ingratitude of all people, including (especially) oneself.

The Advent Wreath One of the most evident of Advent customs, fa-miliar to most, is the Advent wreath, which is a beautiful way of marking the progression of the Advent season and for preparing for the great feast of the Nativity of Our Lord. Fr. Francis X. Weiser, SJ, in his work, Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs, he says this about the custom of the Advent wreath: The Advent wreath originated a few hundred years ago among the Lutherans of eastern Ger-many. It probably was suggested by one of the many light symbols which were used in folklore at the end of November and beginning of De-cember... The Christians in medieval times kept many of these lights and fire symbols alive as popular traditions and ancient folklore. In the sixteenth century the custom started of using such lights as a religious symbol of Advent in the houses of the faithful. This practice quickly spread among the Protestants of eastern Ger-many and was soon accepted by Protestants and Catholics in other parts of the country. Re-cently it has not only found its way to America, but has been spreading so rapidly that it is al-ready a cherished custom in many homes. The Advent wreath is exactly what the word im-plies, a wreath of evergreens (yew or fir or lau-rel), made in various sizes. It is either suspended from the ceiling or placed on a table, usually in front of the family shrine. Fastened to the wreath are four candles standing upright, at equal dis-tances. These candles represent the four weeks of Advent.

Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pecado.
¿Me he preocupa-
do por conocerla mejor? ¿La he defendido, o me he aver-gonzado de ella?
¿He hecho espiri-tismo o he confiado en adivinos u horóscopos?
¿He sido impaciente, he tenido celos o me he enfadado?
¿He albergado rencores o he estado poco dispuesto a perdonar?
¿He tenido odio o he hecho juicios críticos de pensamiento o de obra? ¿He menospreciado a otros?
¿He hablado mal de otros?
¿He tomado alcohol en exceso? ¿Heconsumido drogas?
¿He mirado vídeos o páginas web pornográficas? ¿He co-metido actos impuros conmigo mismo o con otras perso-nas?
¿He dicho mentiras?

Every Sunday of Advent one more candle is lit, until all four candles shed their cheerful light to announce the approaching birthday of the Lord. All oth-er lights are extinguished in the room, and only the gentle glow of the live candles illuminates the darkness. After some prayers, which are recited for the grace of a good and holy preparation for Christmas, the family sings one of the tradition-al Advent hymns or a song in honor of Mary. The traditional symbolism of the Advent wreath reminds the faithful of the Old Testament, when humanity was "sitting in the darkness and in the shadow of death" (Luke 2:79); when the prophets, illumined by God, announced the Redeemer; and when the hearts of men glowed with the desire for the Messiah. The wreath -- an ancient symbol of victory and glory -- symbolizes the "fulfillment of time" in the coming of Christ and the glory of His birth. In some sections of Europe it is customary for persons with the name of John or Joan to have the first right to light the can-dles on the Advent wreath and Christmas tree, because John the Evangelist starts his Gospel by calling Christ the "Light of the World" and John the Baptist was the first one to see the light of divinity shining about the Lord at His baptism in the Jor-dan. With regard to the form of the Advent wreath, within North America and quite possibly within the English speaking world generally, the most common sight is of Advent wreaths with three violet colored candles and one rose, approximating the liturgical colors of each respective Sunday of Advent. (To this as well, some will also add a central white candle to be lit on Christmas Day). In Germany, the traditional custom has been (and still is), not for violet and rose candles to be used, but instead, red.

How to go to Confession
In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.
R i te of Reconci l iat ion
Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace Penitent: Thanks be to God Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were given prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.
How to Make a Good Confession Confession is not difficult, but it does require preparation. We should begin with prayer, placing ourselves in the presence of God, our loving Father. We seek healing and forgiveness through repentance and a resolve to sin no more. Then we review our lives since our last confession, searching our thoughts, words and actions for that which did not conform to God’s command to love Him and one another through His laws and the laws of His Church. This is called an examination of conscience. Examination of Conscience Ask God to help you make a good confession. In quiet reflection ask yourself: Since my last confession… Did I pray to God, daily and from my heart? Did I live and witness to my Catholic faith, joyfully &
courageously? Did I take God’s name in vain? Did I curse anyone or make false oaths? Did I engage in superstitious or occult practices?
Did I attend and participate actively at Mass on Sun-days and holy days of obligation? Did I fast & abstain on prescribed days?
Did I respect people in authority? My employer? Did I honor my parents?
Was I violent or unnecessarily aggressive (e.g., physi-cally, verbally, psychologically, etc.) with anyone?
Was I prideful, stubborn, or rude with anyone? Did I hold a grudge?
Did I abuse alcohol, prescription medications, or ille-gal drugs? Did I overindulge in food?
Did I consent to, recommend, advise, or actively take part in an abortion? Did I use abortifacient drugs?
Did I view pornography, entertain lustful thoughts, conversations or actions?
Was I unloving to my spouse? Did I engage in adul-terous activity (e.g., sexual, emotional, virtual, etc.)? Did I use contraceptives?
Was I neglectful of the spiritual, intellectual, emotion-al, or physical needs of my spouse, children, or fami-ly?
Did I steal or damage another’s property? Was I hon-est and just in my business relations? Did I waste time at work?
Did I contribute to the needs of the spiritually and materially poor with my time and resources?
Did I engage in gossip? Did I lie? Did I speak poorly of others? Did I judge anyone unfairly?
Did I envy anyone? Was I jealous of others or or cov-et another’s belongings?

St. Ambrose December 7 Saint Ambrose, also known as Aurelius Ambrosius, is one of the four original doctors of the Church. He was the Bishop of Milan and became one of the most im-portant theological figure of the 4th century. Ambrose was born around 340 AD to a Roman Christian family. He grew up with his siblings, Satyrus and Marcellina, in Trier, Belgic Gaul (present-day Germany). It is believed by many that when Ambrose was just an infant, a swarm of bees landed on his face and left behind a drop of honey. To his father, this was a sign that Am-brose would become someone great with a wonderful sense for speaking. Ambrose became bishop of Milan in 374, and preached the faith effectively against heretics, called Arians, who denied the divinity of Christ, despite many personal attacks. In defense of the truth of the faith, Ambrose said: “ If you demand my person, I am ready to submit: carry me to prison or to death, I will not resist; but I will never be-tray the church of Christ… I will die at the foot of the altar rather than desert it.” Ambrose baptized the future St. Augustine, and was a great influence upon him.
