Preparing for Mass Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me. St. Paul’s faith in Jesus Christ and his hope in the fulfillment of God’s promises helps him to persevere in any circumstance: when things are going well and when they are going badly; when he has an abundance or when he is in want; when he has a full stomach or when he has to go hungry. This is the kind of perseverance to which we are being called in the holy gospel today. In “The Parable of the Marriage Feast” (in Matthew 22), Jesus contrasts those who were first in-vited by the king and those he invited secondarily. The Fathers of the Church interpret-ed the first group as the Israelites, the first People of God. But because of Israel’s indif-ference and hostility — their rejection of God’s loving call — God (the king) instead in-vites the Gentiles, that is, us, to His wedding feast. However, unless we respond faith-fully to the call we have received, we will be cast “into outer darkness” (Mt 22:13). The “Marriage” in the parable today refers to the marriage of Christ, the Bridegroom, to His Church, the bride. And while this refers to the perfect union of Christ with His members at the end of time, we have a foretaste in the here and now through the holy Mass — the banquet of heaven and earth, of Christ’s Body and Blood. So, how do we prepare well for this feast? How can we avoid the fate of the first people invited? A wonderful way to prepare for holy Mass (to prepare to worthily to participate in the holy Sacrifice) is to pray the most holy rosary. Praying the rosary draws our minds out of the world and into the holy events of Christ’s life as reflected upon by the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Also, to spend some time in silence before Mass (to take a break from chat-ting), to give yourself plenty of time to arrive early at the church. (And even if you are in a rush to make Mass on time, to silence the radio in your car so as to silence your soul.) One homily I will never forget was preached in Rome when I was in seminary. In seminary, we had Morning Prayer and Mass everyday at 6:15 a.m. A priest preached one morning: “If the Pope was celebrating Mass here this morning, would it change the way you prepared yourself for Mass?” My brothers and sisters, I ask you the same question: If you knew the Pope was coming to celebrate Mass at your parish church, would it change how you prepare yourself for Mass? Would you arrive earlier? Would you dress differently? (More modestly or less casual?) Would you be more excit-ed? My brothers and sisters, the Pope is not coming to your parish church this Sunday, but Jesus Christ is. And He invites you to the greatest feast known to man. Are you prepared?

Preparándote Para Misa Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Todo lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece. La fe de San Pablo en Jesucristo y su es-peranza en el cumplimiento de las promesas de Dios lo ayudan a perseverar bajo cual-quier circunstancia: cuando todo va bien y cuando todo va mal; en la abundancia o en la escasez; estando satisfecho o hambriento. Ésta es la clase de perseverancia a la que hemos sido llamados en el santo evangelio hoy. En “La Parábola del Banquete de Bo-das” (en Mateo 22), Jesús contrasta a aquellos a quien el rey invitó primero, con aque-llos a quien invitó después. Según interpretación de los Padres de la Iglesia, el primer grupo representa a los Israelitas, el primer Pueblo de Dios. Pero por su indiferencia y hostilidad — su rechazo al amoroso llamado de Dios — Dios (el rey) invita a los Gentiles, es decir, a nosotros, a Su banquete de bodas. Sin embargo, si no respondemos fielmen-te al llamado que hemos recibido, seremos lanzados “afuera a las tinieblas.” La “Boda” en la parábola de hoy se refiere a la boda de Cristo, el novio, y Su Iglesia, la novia. Y aunque esto se refiere a la perfecta unión de Cristo con Sus miembros al fi-nal de los tiempos, tenemos una prueba aquí y ahora en la Santa Misa — el banquete del cielo en la tierra, del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Entonces, ¿cómo nos vamos a preparar bien para esta fiesta? ¿Cómo podemos evitar que nos pase lo que les pasó a los primeros invitados? Un modo maravilloso de prepararnos para la Santa Misa (de pre-pararnos para participar dignamente en el Santo Sacrificio) es rezando el santo rosario. El rezo del santo rosario aparta nuestra mente del mundo y nos transporta a los sagra-dos eventos de la vida de Cristo reflejados en el Inmaculado Corazón de María. Tam-bién, guardar un momento de silencio antes de la Misa (hacer una pausa en nuestra charla), dedicar suficiente tiempo para llegar temprano a la iglesia. (Y si tiene que apu-rarse para llegar a tiempo a Misa, maneje en silencio para silenciar su alma.) Nunca olvidaré una homilía que escuché en Roma cuando yo estaba en el semina-rio. En el seminario, teníamos laudes (oraciones de la mañana) y Misa todos los días a las 6:15 a.m. Era difícil. Un sacerdote predicaba una mañana: “Si el papa estuviera ce-lebrando Misa aquí esta mañana, ¿cambiarías la forma de prepararte para la Misa?” Hermanos y hermanas, yo les pregunto a ustedes lo mismo: Si el papa estuviera aquí ahora, ¿cambiarían la forma de prepararse para la Misa? ¿Habrían llegado más tem-prano? ¿Habrían usado otro vestido? (Más modesto o menos casual?) ¿Estarían más emocionados? Hermanos y hermanas, el Papa no está aquí, pero está Cristo. Y Él los invita a la fiesta más grande que el hombre ha conocido. ¿Están preparados?
