FROM THE PASTOR

SACRIFICE

To sacrifice something is to set it aside for God, in such a way that it can’t fully return to its original purpose. To take a trivial example: We cut flowers and put them at the altar, and do not afterwards allow them to be placed in people’s homes. The cut flowers usually stay at the altar until they die. A greater example is the Eucharist itself: We offer the bread and wine, but they become the Body and Blood of the Lord, never returning to their former substance.

The Lord Jesus sacrificed himself: He gave himself in wholehearted obedience and love to God. He never wavered from his mission, never went back to a “normal” human life, up to and including the point of his death.

Moreover, Jesus sacrificed himself for us. His gift of himself to God makes up for all that we have failed to do and failed to become. By joining ourselves to Jesus, we can leapfrog over our failures and debts to God, and become the people God intended us to be—a people of wholehearted obedience and love.

So don’t return to your failures and sins. Instead, live for Jesus. Get to know Jesus well, by knowing everything he said and everything he did. Stay close to Jesus, sharing in his sacrifice, so that you can be fully dedicated to God.

• Seminarian Joe Uzar will be leading prayers and speaking at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 4, at St. John Lutheran Church on Washington Avenue in Carnegie. His appearance is part of the Lenten series sponsored by the Carnegie Area Ministerial Association, an ecumenical undertaking each Lent. Please consider participat-ing this Wednesday and subsequent Wednesdays in Lent.

• Remember also the lamentations, Gorzkie Zale, at 3:00 p.m. each Sunday in Lent (except March 15).

• Daylight Savings Time begins next week, Sunday, March 8. Set your clocks forward one hour, or you’ll be very late for Mass on Sunday!

This past Fall, a Seventh Grade Catechist planned to review the Ten Commandments with her students. However, her class stopped when she reached the Fifth Commandment: Thou Shall Not Kill. After the death of Robin Williams, her class had questions about suicide. In school they learned about depression, stress, bullying, and ways to get help, but they wanted to know how God fit in this teaching. They wanted to know the Catholic Church’s views on suicide. The catechist sat in a circle with her students and told them that God gave them their lives, and only He must decide when that life is over. She reminded them how much God loves them. She told them never to hesitate to reach out to a counselor or other professional. The conversation went on and on. The students shared stories, listened to advice, and prayed together. When other teachers may have given a text-book response to the question and moved on to the next commandment, this catechist saw the deep concern of these students and shared God’s word with them, comforted them in their grieving, and perhaps even helped strengthen their trust in God. It is a good example to all of us. Sometimes we are so worried about keeping a schedule that we miss an opportunity to reach out.

LENT AT ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 18. The season begins and ends with days of *fasting. (Others are encouraged to make alternative personal sacrifices for those days.) Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent are also days of **abstinence from eating meat. The fasting and abstinence set the rhythm for the community. Called to continuing conversion, to a deeper spiritual life, and to prepare for Easter, all Christians are encouraged to undertake works of: • prayer, i.e, special devotions such as Stations of the Cross, a Bible study, a daily rosary, etc.; • self-denial, i.e., to “give something up for Lent,” usually some lawful pleasure such as a kind or quantity of

food, drink, entertainment, or any other satisfaction; • charity, i.e., a habit of special kindness extended to others, especially to those in need, often in the form of

contributions to charities or to the poor.
