SWEDANASwedana is bahir parimarjana chikitsa.
One among the Shadupakramas.
Rooksha / Snigdha.
Explained in parshwagraha, hanugraha, khalli, Amavata .
IMPORTANCE
Sudation causes the ADHERED TOXIC MATTER TO MELT and flow out in a person who has been previously oleated.
Ch. Si.6/12
Just as dirt of cloth is seperated and washed by soap and water so by oleation and sudation the doshas are SEPERATED & EXPELLED out of body. Ch. Si.6/12Samshodhana given without snehana and swedana would DESTROY the body like the dried wood. Su. Ci.33/46With snehana swedana the dried wood can also be made to BEND . Ch.su. 14/5
ROUTE OF DRUG ADMINISTRATION
SNEHANA BASTI NASYA ABHYANTARA PAAN
PINDA SWEDA
MODERN TOPICAL ROUTE OF DRUG ADMINISTRATION• Creams• foams• Ointment• Lotions• Gels• Transdermal patches
PATRA PINDA SWEDA
• Pain is produced mainly by Vata Prakopa • Prakupita Vata get localized in dhatus and
produces Srotorodha. It occurs due to Vata Sanga, which is responsible for Shotha. • Patra pinda sweda induces Srotoshodhana
and regulates Vata Dosha.• It releases pain, relaxes the muscles, activates
the local metabolic process, increases local blood flow, and thereby increasing the absorption of Sneha through the skin.
SHASHTIKA SHALI PINDA SWEDA
Improvement in fine and gross motor functions spasticity and muscle hyper tone. Absorption of drugs and nutrients locally affects the local health. Neuro muscular disorders – Hemiplegia,Paraplegia, Muscular wasting, etc.
• DJD – OA.
ABSORPTION THROUGH SKIN
• Absorption of substances through the skin depends on a number of factors:• Concentration• Duration of contact• Solubility of medication• Physical condition of the skin• Part of the body exposed • the amount of hair on the skin.
• OUTERMOST LAYER = Stratum Corneum.• The LIPID SOLUBLE chemicals make it faster
through the layer and into the circulation, however nearly all molecules penetrate it to some minimal degree.• Rate :- Scrotal Forehead Armpit
≥ Scalp BACK ABDOMEN Ventral HAND/FOOT.
• Anti-inflammatory3, Analgesic & Antihistamine activity
• Antihistamine activity produces the Anti-itching effect
• Antioxidant effect, Anti depressant4 effect • Anti anxiety effect• Immune changes5 including increased Natural Killer
cell and lymphocytes (CD56) and CD56+CD3• Increased Dopamine levels, • Systemic hemodynamic changes6 by increasing
skin blood flow (SkBF) and decreasing central venous pressure (CVP)
PHARMACODYNAMICS OF HERBS
LOCAL HEAT THERAPY VS
POTTALI SWEDA• Sweda in Ayurveda is Highly Scientific with varied choice
of drugs acc. to the condition Ruksha sweda , Snigdha sweda.
• Not just heat application but increases the absorption rate locally by potent vasodilatation.
• Increases blood flow supplies oxygen and nutrients, relax sore muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
• Increase ROM by improving the flexibility of tendons and ligaments, reduce muscle spasms, and alleviates pain.
• Rooksha sweda subsides the Oedema.• External route to subdue the aggravated underlying dosha also
acts as an adjuvant therapy to bring the toxic waste out through the skin with sweat.
SUBSTANCE P• Substance P is an important element in pain
perception. The sensory function of substance P is thought to be related to the TRANSMISSION of pain information into the CNS.• Capsaicin L/A from raktmaricha , curcumin from
haridra , zingiberine from ginger has been shown to reduce the levels of substance P.
DISEASES & PINDA SWEDA• Diabetic Neuropathy.• Cerebral Palsy.• Duchene muscular dystrophy.• PTSD – Post traumatic stress disorder.• Neuropathic pain.• Sarcopenia associated disorders.• Post CVA Associated – plegia and Paresis.• Diseases of joints – OA, RA, AS.• Fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, myalgia, contracture, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis.
CONCLUSION• We have to explore in depth regarding to the
greater science of pinda sweda .• We have to redevise the methods/techniques on
the pretext of new technology in order to make it cosmopolitan in nature.• The physiology and its work on pathology is
where we have to expound more and more.
