IV Sunday of Advent December 20, 2020

The prophecy of a Davidic Dynasty made in the first reading from the Second Book of Samuel today is fulfilled in the proclamation of the Gospel. The Sacred writer is not talking about a house in terms of a dwelling place. The House of David is the lineage of the Promised One, now complete in and through the birth of Jesus to the Virgin Mary. We are part of that lineage. We may not be members of the House of David, but we are grafted onto that family tree through the presence of Jesus in our lives. The growth of that family tree is accomplished by the way we accept the invitation to be His disciple. Think about the first disciple, Mary, whose “Yes” changed the course of human history and changed the course of our own history.

Do you think she fully understood what she was accepting and what that acceptance would mean? Remember that after the angel greeted her with the opening line, Hail, favored one, the Lord is with you, the angel’s next statement was Do not be afraid. That is usually the opening line for most angelic appear-ance: Do not be afraid. Evidently, an angel must be frightening in appearance, otherwise why would the first statement be a directive not to be afraid? The angel’s message was upsetting even alarming. In our culture much has been done to deny angels the power they possess. We have reduced them to images on a coffee cup or even worse lapel pins or jewelry. The message that the angel Gabriel brought to her was troubling and upsetting. And yet because of that message she entered more fully into the relationship that she already had with God, the God who was now giving her a great task. She could never have guessed all that it meant.

Now think about yourself and the tasks that are required of you because of your relationships. What spouse enters a marriage convinced that he or she understands fully what the future will hold. When children come along and a family begins to be formed, there is no manual on how the family life will play out. This scenario can be applied to any one of us in just about any situation. Religious life, ordination, a career, service in the military, a chosen profession or the gift of a vocation (and I do not just mean a reli-gious vocation) the choice of an education. We try to put it off and keep the need to commit at arm’s length. I remember when, in another life, I was an academic and students that I had in high school and even in college would enter into higher education without choosing a field of study; undeclared was their status. I appreciate the decision-making process but would encourage them to decide. It was always strik-ing to me that one could sort of drift along as undeclared. Mary was a young woman whose life, like ours, unfolded in a way that could not have been anticipated. But she declared her decision: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

The great prophecy made to David was fulfilled by a young woman who said yes to the will of God. How much can be accomplished in our lives if we, like Mary, also consent to be servants of God? With today’s Liturgy we close out another Advent Season and will soon begin the celebration of Christ-mas. It can be a Christmas like none other. And I am not referring to the COVID. This Christmas can be like no other Christmas by the manner in which we respond to the invitation to be, like Mary, an instru-ment in God’s hands, collaborating with His Grace to make Christ present to our world. The Season of Advent is not given to us only to bring us to the manger and rejoice in the sublime beauty of the Incarna-tion. The Season of Advent, like all moments of God’s Grace, is meant to bring us beyond this present moment and bring us to God’s glory. We can only recognize the glory if we seek it. In the days ahead, seek His glory in our world. Recognize His Grace at work in your life and live in such a way that you, too, make Christ present to our world. A world that seems now, more than ever, to need the Good News that Jesus came to give us.

    Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

NOW MORE THAN EVER, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

The Catholic Charities Appeal is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s single most im-portant fundraiser benefiting hundreds of thousands of people through countless organizations and gifts made to the CCA will provide support needed to beneficiar-ies grouped into five key areas of focus: Education, Social Services, Nutritional Development Services, Evangelization, Parish and Spiritual Life, Clergy, and Local Mission Activities. Every Day, Catholic Charities and its partners are humbled to serve our brothers and sisters in need throughout the Archdiocese.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES Family Service Centers are the first point of con-tact for individuals, families, and parishes when they seek assistance from Catholic Social Services. Seven such centers are located throughout the five-county metropolitan area. Each pro-vides intake and assess-ment for individuals and families to assist them in accessing benefits and ser-vices. Emergency assistance includes clothing cupboards and food pantries, rent or utility bill assistance, housing referrals, and case manage-ment. Adults benefit from employment training, ESL classes, GED preparation, and job placement assis-tance.

The Deaf Aposto late “Have you ever wondered what Mass is like for a deaf person? What it would be like to have no access to the readings, gospel, homily, or prayers of the faithful. Just silence. Having overcome many obsta-cles, I am faced with even more challenges due to the pandemic. Thankfully, the Deaf Apostolate has gone above and beyond to provide Access to Sunday and daily virtual Mass in sign language, so I can still connect with our Catholic community. Additionally, Sister Kath-leen and Father Sean have been incredible in providing interpretation during a small and safe First Communion for my son. Meaningful gestures like these genuinely make an impact and are made possible by the Deaf Apostolate and through faithful supports like you. This Appeal gave me hope and comfort amid months of uncertainty”

Dr. Eva Hartmann, beneficiary, The Deaf Apostolate

Lavonne, a client at one of Nutritional Develop-ment Services' (NDS) 46 food cupboards in our region, turned to them for help. When she lost her job due to the pandemic, she also lost her ability to feed her children and grandchil-dren. NDS assisted her with weekly meals, healthy groceries, and even diapers for the youngest chil-dren. Lavonne's story is just one ex-ample of the thousands of men, women, and children who have received essential nutritional services this year. Those in need can always rely on NDS to provider hope, no matter what.

In an on-going effort to keep our pews clean and COVID clean and to keep our fellow parishioners safe and healthy, we need to continually clean and properly sanitize our pews after each Mass. Since early June, many volunteers have dedicated their time and willingness to take this responsibility after each Mass, funeral and other various liturgical cele-brations. We are grateful for their dedication to this effort. New dates have been added to the sign-up Genius, primarily Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Masses. So I encourage you and your family to pick a Sunday or a Mass during Christmas and consider spending an additional 15 minutes to assist our parish in keeping our church clean and COVID free. The votes are in and the next book the St. Cornelius Literary Society will explore is Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory. It was a run away hit and gar-nered a massive amount of votes. No need for a recount here. Seven-year-old Buddy inaugu-rates the Christmas season by crying out to his cousin, Miss Sook Falk: "It's fruitcake weath-er!" Thus begins an unforgetta-ble portrait of an odd but enduring friendship between two innocent souls--one young and one old--and the memories they share of beloved holiday rituals.

(Goodreads.com) The date of the next meeting will probably be in late December.

    The Ministry of Consolation

A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant person/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and example of the Lord Jesus:

"Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).

A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. At this time, due to the coronavirus we are all struggling with, we need to put our ministry on hold until a later date can be arranged. When that date can be determined, we will inform our current participants. Watch this space for updates.

CRS NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT Now's the time to take action. Hunger and malnutrition are putting millions of children across the globe at risk of not reaching their God-given potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertainty and immense challenges here in the United States. Around the world, children already vulnerable to the negative impacts of poverty are at an even greater risk. Lifting our collective voices to Congress has helped lead the way to address these problems. The Global Child Thrive Act passed on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives thanks to the voices of thousands of supporters like you! We now have a new chance to pass the bill this congressional session. Your voice can make the difference. How? By emailing your members of Congress to support in-cluding the Global Child Thrive Act as an amendment to the final Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. The Global Child Thrive Act, as an amendment, will mandate incorporating Early Childhood Development activities into U.S. government-funded international programs for children. Early Childhood Development activities include creating op-portunities for children to play and explore, and providing the nurturing care to feel safe and loved. All children should be able to grow and thrive. You can be a part of the solution that makes this happen in the final push to get the bill across the finish line! Visit www.crs.org for more information.

    Family Promise Homeless Ministry

Family Promise, a non-profit, which serves the homeless in southern Chester County.

St. Cornelius volunteers support Family Promise, a non-profit, which serves the homeless in southern Chester County. Since March, Family Promise has provided financial assistance families in our community. And even though they are no longer able to do the “rotational” program through the churches, they have continued to take families in, and work hard to keep the guests safe. As families graduate from the program, they become a part of the growing alumni network. They continue to need support and encouragement, and the case manager is there for them. The National office has put together an online training. If volunteers would like a refresher, or for new people who would like to learn more, they can simply go to: https://familypromise.org/volunteer-training-videos. For questions or to make additional donations or be-come a volunteer, please contact Kathy Silvon at

    [email protected] or call 484-720-8214.

HOLY FAMILY PROJECT You have seen many recent improvements to our campus and Church, but we are not finished! Plans are now underway to improve the area to the rear of the Narthex. This is a beautiful space, which opens onto our backyard and the statue of “Our Lady of Chadds Ford” - but we rarely use it. The current patio area, which was donated by a parish family some time ago, will be modified and expanded to give more usable space. The exist-ing stones will be reused, but placed closer together to give a smoother surface, and we hope to have many gath-erings – such as post-Mass coffees – in this space. To make this de-sign work even better, a new walkway to the park-ing lot will be added. Our current design calls for a five-foot wide walk-way of pavers of varying sizes. We plan to have the pavers laser-engraved and will be offering them to parishioners who may wish to have them en-graved in memory of loved ones. Since the larger pavers (12” x 12”) are limited in number (only 75 available at $400.), these will probably go fast. But you can also purchase smaller pavers (4” x 8” at $150). We do expect the larger pavers to go quickly. At this point we anticipate selling pavers between now and probably into early 2021, and installing the walkway sometime in late spring or early summer. If you are interested in purchasing a paver, please see our web-site to fill out the order form.

CHURCH CALENDARS Our parish calendars have arrived and are available for your home or office. These are provided by Pagano Funeral Home for free. While they do not have vaccination dates or the expected “end date” for the pandemic, they do have more important Church dates to remember; Lent, Holy Week, Feasts Days and Holy Days. Please Be sure to pick up your family calendar after Mass this weekend.

Advent Weekly Calendar and Booklets Be sure to pick up your copy of the Advent calendar of daily readings and reflections as well as the Advent booklet titled Advent Expectation. These can help you and your family attune yourselves to the deeper rhythms of this time of expectation. Each day has a scripture passage and a short reflection that helps us on our journey to Christmas to celebrate Jesus as our Emmanuel.

    Catholic Social Teaching CST 101:

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst

the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal,

conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a

direct reading of these documents. Join us once again on Sunday, December 27, at 3:00 PM for our second of seven installments of Catholic Social Teaching by logging into our ZOOM meeting and join in the conversation. More information can be found on our website at

CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND PARTICIPATION The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society - in economics and politics, in law and policy - directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and family are the central social institu-tions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking to-gether the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.

  • T F S A D 20, 2020 Blessing of a Christmas Tree

Christmas is almost here! Have you blessed your Christmas tree yet? According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing. In the home the Christmas tree may be blessed by a parent or another family member, in connection with the evening meal on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time on Christmas Day. When all have gathered, a suitable song may be sung. [The leader makes the sign of the cross, and all reply “Amen.”] [The leader may greet those present in the following words] Let us glorify Christ our light, who brings salvation and peace into our midst, now and forever. R/. Amen. My brothers and sisters, amidst signs and wonders Christ Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea: his birth brings joy to our hearts and enlightenment to our minds. With this tree, decorated and adorned, may we welcome Christ among us; may its lights guide us to the perfect light. [One of those present or the leader reads a text of sa-cred Scripture, for example, Titus 3:4 (lines 4-7) or Ezekiel 17:22 (lines 22-24 4; I will plant a tender shoot on the mountain heights of Israel.)] Reader: The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. [The intercessions are then said. The leader says] Let us ask God to send his blessing upon us and upon this sign of our faith in the Lord. R/. Lord, give light to our hearts. That this tree of lights may remind us of the tree of glory on which Christ accomplished our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. That the joy of Christmas may always be in our homes, let us pray to the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. That the peace of Christ may dwell in our hearts and in the world, let us pray to the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God.

[After the intercessions the leader invites all present to say the Lord’s Prayer. Our Father who aren’t in heaven…]

[The leader says the prayer with hands joined] Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the proph-ets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Em-manuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. The lights of the tree are then illuminated. The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying: May the God of glory fill our hearts with peace and joy, now and forever. R/. Amen. [The blessing concludes with a verse from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”] O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death’s dark shadow put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
