SCOUTING AND CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRYMinistering to young people is a vital aspect of the Catholic Church’s life and mission. In their pastoral framework on youth ministry, the U.S. Bishops state: “Ministry with adolescents (is) a concern for the entire church community, especially for leaders in parishes, schools, and dioceses.” The Church endeavors to minister to young people in a variety of ways, among which are: Catholic education and religious formation, youth ministry, and boys’ and girls’ scouting programs. All of these are excellent opportunities for the Church to pass on the Gospel of Jesus Christ to children and youth through her life and rich tradition of faith, morals, leadership development, pastoral care, prayer and worship, and service. Over the years, the Catholic youth ministry community and scouting programs have enjoyed a shared mission and a collaborative relationship, one that continues to this day. There are various Catholic organizations and committees that work with scouting and that provide resources for parishes, parents, and young people in the Church.

At the national level, these include the following:National Catholic Committee on Scouting (Boy Scouts of America)

- nccs-bsa.org/National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire -

nccgscf.org/index.htmAmerican Heritage Girls National Catholic Committee -

ahgonline.org/catholiccommittee National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) -

Various scouting arrangements have developed over the past century, all with the purpose of forming and empowering young people as they mature. Within the Catholic Church, each diocesan bishop oversees arrangements with scouting organizations in his diocese.

“Don’t be so judgmental!” “Why are Christians so intolerant?” “Why can’t we just coexist?” In an age in which preference has replaced morality, many people find it difficult to speak the truth, afraid of the reactions they will receive if they say something is right or wrong. Using engaging stories and personal experience, Edward Sri helps us understand the classical view of morality and equips us to engage relativism, appealing to both the head and the heart. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, why making a judgment is not judging a person’s soul, and why, in the words of Pope Francis, “relativism wounds people.” Questions? VOCATIONS AWARENESSIT IS REALLY GOD HIMSELF, the “LORD of the harvest,” who choose his laborers. His call is always undeserved and unexpected. We are called to cooperate with His providence, and to use the powerful tool which he has placed in our hands: prayer. Jesus said, “Pray the LORD of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” SERRA US

FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKFebruary 10th – Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel Reading: Luke 5:1-11Background on the Gospel Reading: In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches from Simon’s boat. Jesus turns to Simon and instructs him about where to lower the fishing nets. Simon and others have been fishing throughout the night and have not caught anything. Simon protests, claiming that such an effort would be futile. Simon ultimately obeys Jesus and lowers his nets into the deeper water as directed. Notice here that Peter calls Jesus by the title “master.” He already recognizes Jesus as a person of authority. They catch so many fish that the nets begin to tear; Jesus’ presence has created abundance out of scarcity, just as it did at the wedding feast at Cana, which we heard at Mass just a few weeks ago.Simon Peter becomes a follower of Jesus immediately. He calls Jesus “Lord” and protests his unworthiness to be in Jesus’ presence. Today’s Gospel, therefore, marks a turning point in the relationship between Jesus and Peter.

February 11th – Our Lady of LourdesToday marks the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1858 to Marie Bernade (St. Bernadette) Soubirous. Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, the Blessed Virgin appeared eighteen times, and showed herself to St. Bernadette in the hollow of the rock at Lourdes. On March 25 she said to the little shepherdess who was only fourteen years of age: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Since then Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage and many cures and conversions have taken place. The message of Lourdes is a call to personal conversion, prayer, and charity

February 14th – St. Cyril, Monk St. Methodius, BishopCyril and Methodius, the apostles of the Slavs, were brothers who hailed from Thessalonica. After receiving an excellent education, they were sent by the Eastern Emperor Michael III (842-856) into the kingdom of Grand-Moravia; through great effort and despite tremendous difficulties they converted the Slavic nations. They translated the Bible into Slavonic and devised a kind of writing, called glagolitic, which even to the present day is used in the liturgical services of some Eastern rites.

Faith Formation and Youth Ministry News

St. Columbkille,Patron Saint

of Faith Formation

Contact Debbie Valley in the Faith Formation Office at 937-382-1596 or [email protected]

A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW DRE, DEBBIE VALLEYMy name is Debbie Valley and I am your new Director of Religious Education. I was raised in Everett, WA (north of Seattle), as the youngest of three. My family also welcomed 13 foster children into our home while I was growing up. While in college, I met and married my husband, Jim. Jim was commissioned into the Air Force upon his graduation and we were stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. While there, I graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of Texas San Antonio. We also welcomed our first son, Jeremy. Shortly after my graduation, we were sent to Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton. Our boys, Matthew and Brandon, were born on the base. After four years in Ohio, we were sent to Oklahoma for 3 years and then we returned to Wright Patterson.

After 3 years in Dayton, Jim took a one-year assignment in Saudi Arabia. (It turned into 15 months!)While he was in Saudi, I made the decision to start homeschooling our boys. We were blessed for Jim’s next station to be in Kettering, at Defense Acquisition University (DAU), where he taught and eventually became a department chair. In 2010, after 24 years of service, Jim retired from the Air Force and has continued to work at DAU as a civilian.

During our homeschooling years, I was blessed to become the director of the Immaculate HEART Co-op in Dayton. It is a large co-op for 5th-12th graders located at Emmanuel. In addition to heading up a team of amazing moms to run the co-op, I taught religion to 5-8 graders and 11-12 graders. I also ran the yearbook and choreographed for our amazing musicals (including teaching three kids to tap dance for Singing in the Rain).

I am happy to report, that all three of our sons, have now graduated high school: Jeremy is a student at Ohio University, Matthew is a certified welder working in Michigan, and Brandon attends Ave Maria University in Florida. I have also worked in ministry at my home parish, Incarnation, as the Director of Special Needs, a 4th grade catechist, and Director of Vacation Bible School. I am unapologetically pro-life, and I currently have the privilege of serving as the Vice Chairman for Elizabeth New Life Center Board of Directors in Dayton.

So, how did I end up as your new DRE? While contemplating what I to do when my boys graduated, I heard a call from the Lord to go into fulltime ministry and so I began the Parish Catechetical Leadership program (formerly DRE program) through the Catechetical Institute at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. God willing, I will be completing the final year of the 5-year program this summer. I was excited to accept Fr. Mike’s offer to join the parish staff and I know that this is where God wants me. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and to serve you and the Lord. Please know that my door is always open to you if you need to talk, desire someone to pray with, or have any ideas or suggestions.
