Odds and ends from here and there…

CHRISTMAS THANKS. Even though

the Christmas music is long gone from the radio,

and most homes have taken down their outdoor

lighting, it’s still appropriate on this feast of the

baptism of the Lord Jesus to offer thanks. A big

thank you to all the music ministers, eucharistic

ministers, lectors, sacristans, servers, ushers and church

decorators for their hard work in making our Christmas

liturgies beautiful and prayerful. All seven parishes had

lovely music and many people to worship and celebrate the

birth of our Savior. Your energy and creativity are much

appreciated.

Thanks also to all families who donated to the

Christmas flower funds for each parish. Your loved ones

were in my mind and heart and prayers during this Christmas

season.

RECOGNITION. Congratulations to Deacon Herb

Riley, whose column describing his missionary trip to

Mexico in October, first published in our bulletin, was

reprinted in last week’s Pittsburgh Catholic. It’s appropriate

to recognize the work of all missionaries at any time during

the year. In the Christmas stories we heard how the shepherd

and the magi proclaimed their adoration of the Christ Child,

and shared that Good News with all who hear. The shepherd

and the magi were unlikely, but joyful, missionaries. All of

us can be missionaries, even without travelling to foreign

countries.

ENVELOPES. We are continuing to use different

envelope companies for the various parishes. But as we

move toward one parish, we’ll be changing over to one

envelope company, with the same second collections and

envelopes in each church. For example, some of the packets

have a “monthly offering.” This is an additional opportunity

to give to your parish, and not meant to take away from your

weekly giving, which is the backbone of our Offertory

collections. In a couple of weeks I’ll offer some thoughts

about Catholic stewardship and “how much to give your

church.”

BULLETINS. Many parishioners travel, for

vacation or business or visiting family. When you do, be

sure to attend Sunday Mass. A very helpful resource for

finding a Catholic church is the website

www.masstimes.org . All you do is input the name of the

town (or zip code) of where you are, and it will tell you the

names, addresses and times of Masses for the nearest

Catholic churches, in the U.S. or Canada.

When you do go away, I would appreciate it if you

bring back a bulletin from the parish you visit for me to see.

I enjoy reading about the activities of parishes from near or

far. You can drop off bulletins at the parish office, or put

them in an envelope and place it in the Sunday collection

basket. Thanks in advance for these parish bulletins.

RUMOR CONTROL. From time to time I get the

question, when are we going to close churches? Well, I don’t

know. The On Mission for the Church Alive pastoral

planning process has a clear order: first, become one parish;

second, analyze publicly the needs of the new parish

(numbers of people and organizations, size and shape of

buildings, circumstances of the various communities); third,

then look to see if the parish should consider closing and/or

selling one or several church buildings. All three stages

involve much public consultation with the clergy team, parish

staff, Pastoral and Finance Council members, and the

parishioners.

Right now, we are only moving through stage one.

We are preparing to become one parish on July 1, 2020.

There will be several “parish assembly” meetings later in the

spring to prepare for this coming together of our parishes.

Only after this is accomplished will we move to the second

stage. We are nowhere near considering closing any church

in our grouping. If you hear this rumor, shut it down by

telling anyone that you heard it from the horse’s mouth

(mine) that it is not true.

PRAYING FOR OUR BELOVED DEAD. Many

have noticed that we are including the names of every person

buried from our parishes in the prayers of the faithful at all

Sunday Masses. Sometimes this is a listing of six, eight or

ten names! We are “older parishes” and it is characteristic of

our grouping that we have many funerals (over 300 Masses

and blessing services during the past 12 months). Pray for

our beloved deceased parishioners each and every week when

you come to Mass.

COUNTING NOSES. I ask that all the ushers in

every church continue to count the number of participants at

all Saturday night and Sunday Masses. This data will help us

assess our needs. Keep on counting!

LENT IS COMING. It’s not too soon to think

about the seasons of Lent and Easter. This year Ash

Wednesday is February 26. Palm Sunday is April 5. Easter

Sunday is April 12. Pentecost Sunday is May 31. Look for

our Lenten and Easter schedules soon in this bulletin.

“John, in his humble reluctance, baptized the Son of God. That same God calls each of us,

in our own humility, to bring His peace and justice to one another.”

DEEP GROUP MEETINGS

The DEEP group with Father Mohler will continue to meet on Mondays twice a

month at 6:00 pm in the St. Maurice chapel as we strive to grow deeper in our

faith through Discipleship, Evangelization, Eucharist and Prayer. Our upcom-

ing meetings will include watching videos and having a discussion from the

series “Restored: Stories of Encounter” about ordinary people whose lives

have been radically moved by Jesus Christ to serve others in bringing Christ’s

light to dark and lonely places. Upcoming meeting dates: Jan. 13, Jan. 27,

Feb. 10 & Feb. 24. Questions or comments can be directed to Father Mohler

at [email protected] or 412-271-5666.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is home to two nationally recognized

educational programs for children with special needs: St. Anthony School

Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech (formerly known as

The DePaul Institute). A special collection to benefit these two

organizations will take place the weekend of January 18-19, 2020 at all

Masses at each parish. St. Anthony School Programs provides an inclusive

education to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, or

other Intellectual Disabilities in five elementary/intermediate classrooms,

secondary classrooms and one post-secondary program at Duquesne

University. DePaul School for Hearing and Speech provides Listening and

Spoken Language (LSL) education to children who are deaf or hard of

hearing. Without the use of sign language, DePaul students learn to listen

and speak and successfully transition to their neighborhood schools

alongside their peers with typical hearing. Your donation will help St.

Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to

further their goals of providing quality educational programs and services

to their students. Your support is critical. Your generosity will help these

organizations forever improve the lives of their students and families.

all of our parishioners who

participated with us in the Amen to

Action program on the day after

Thanksgiving (including Fr. Almade).

churches and areas ask if they could

buy one. We thought some of you

might like to have one as well as it represents all eight of

our beautiful churches (keep in mind, it will soon be a

collector’s item!) If you would, we will place another

order if we have enough interest. Please call Natalie at

This Friday, our Confirmation candidates will participate in their Confirmation retreat with the NET

(National Evangelical Team) group of ministers on the St. Maurice Campus. We are fortunate to again

bring the NET ministers to our parishes for this successful retreat for our confirmandi. Thank you for

keeping our confirmandi in your continued prayers as they pray, study and prepare for their

Confirmations this spring. Thank you for also praying for their parents and sponsors for leading them to

the Holy Spirit.

Our four RCIA candidates are back for the second half of their study and preparation to become full

members of the Catholic church this spring at the Easter Vigil. They are now entering the period of the

Catechumenate (a period of study and learning about the faith). A catechumen is a person who is

studying and learning about their faith. These upcoming months are critical to their religious

development and will lay a strong faith-formation for their lifetime. Thank you for keeping them in your

continued prayers.

Last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany. At Mass, we heard the story of the three

wise men who visited the baby Jesus, bringing Him gifts. The Christmas story is all about gift giving.

The wonderful gift of Jesus that God gives to the world and the wonderful gifts that we give back.

This time of year is a time of resolutions. If you haven’t made a new year’s resolution yet, here’s

one to consider: spend time thinking of how you helped others last year and the positive impact

you made on their life. Those actions are a reflection of who you are. Make a resoluation to continue helping others

and continue to give back to God the gift of yourself...to give back to God through helping others. If you weren’t

happy with the amount of time you gave to others last year, you have the beautiful gift of 2020 to make a positive

change.
