July 1, 2020.

Dear Parishioners, Over the past couple of weeks I included a letter in the bulletin providing an overview of the merger process and addressed some questions that you might have. I mentioned that we will present a proposed merger timeline leading up to the anticipated merger date of July 2020. This timeline is the result of our clergy team meeting with Parish Services from the diocese. We believe that this will provide a good framework as we move forward in becoming one parish where we will grow together as disciples and committed followers of Our Lord Jesus Christ. As baptized Catholics, we are called and commissioned to live and carry out this mission of Christ that He passed on to his followers down through the ages: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” —Matthew 28:19-20 As we seek to grow, live and share our faith keeping Jesus at the center of our lives, we will fulfill this mission, becoming a unified, vibrant Catholic parish of disciples. When we speak about a vibrant parish, the keystones we consider are: The Eucharist, Evangelization, Catechesis, Formation and Stewardship, which together help the faithful to grow in depth of understanding and a lived reality of what it means to be the Body of Christ. These were the main areas highlighted in the recent survey that we made available on the website and in the church vestibules. Since we initially only received 244 responses, we are making the link for the survey active on our website (techscatholic.com) for two more weeks (from June 24 - July 8). We ask that you please take the time to complete the survey, as this will help us to better understand your perspective and desires. The goal of this process of renewing and revising our structures, staff and ministries, is so that we can best serve God’s people, especially you our faithful parishioners. Please join Father Bill, Father Ken, Deacon Gerry and me in continuing to pray for the success of our grouping’s merger and for a deepening of faith in our Lord

and the mission which he has entrusted to each one of us. — Father Bob

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time • June 30, 2019

From Deacon Gerry … Recently Deacon Mingwei Li and I both assisted as deacons at a Sunday Mass. Deacon Ming and his family belong to St. Elizabeth. He was ordained a transitional deacon last June and is to be ordained a priest on June 29, 2019. He is a "transitional" deacon because priesthood is his eventual vocational calling. I was ordained a "permanent" deacon in June of 2011. As we assisted during that Mass, we both exercised the complete diaconate in which we were ordained. Participating in liturgy is one aspect of the ministry of an ordained deacon. This ministry is called the Ministry of Sacrament and the Ministry of Word. The deacon assists at Mass, preaches homilies, distributes Communion, baptizes, officiates at weddings and funerals outside of Mass. There is an additional appointment for the deacon by the bishop to a Ministry of Service and Charity. Oftentimes this involves a specific or general assignment within the parish to which he is assigned, such as faith formation or youth ministry. At the discretion of the bishop, there are other assignments where the bishop may decide to have the deacon serve. Some of these ministries are: prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, youth services/homes, food pantries and others. Besides my current assignment to our Parish Grouping, I have an additional assignment to the Diocesan Tribunal where I assist individuals seeking annulments after a divorce. Just as many parishioners serve the parish and diocese in many different ways, so a deacon serves in many ways and in diverse venues. Ministry unfolds and reveals many surprises. But it is a blessing journeying to the Lord with so many fellow travelers. My wife, Sandi and I have four married children and 15 grandchildren. We have both been active in our prior parish while raising our family in McKeesport. We walk together with you on our journey of life, seeking and proclaiming Jesus Christ. We anticipate the Good News that we will all be experiencing as we evolve from our four parishes into the new life of the parish which we are becoming.

Deacon Gerry

Our Sick & Shut-ins…

Our Second Collection THIS Sunday is for the Repairs & Maintenance of our Parish properties. It is through your generosity to this collection that we have been able to maintain the necessary care required to keep our buildings and grounds safe, sound and secure. In case you missed it last week, it’s not too late to use your Peter’s Pence envelope. Your donations will help our Holy Father assist those suffering from war, oppression, disease and natural disasters.

Winners of both fundraisers—Golden Oppportunity and Fab Five Lottery—will be reported in next week’s bulletin. New FAB FIVE Tickets can be picked up in the Sacristy NEXT Sunday. We thank our July Sponsors … Nancy & Mickey Plavchak of Terrace Gardens LLC.

Congratulations to Serra High Students who are St. Clare of Assisi Parishioners for their accomplishments! Freshman, Mary Jane Butler made the Ruby Honor Roll (receiving no grade lower than 93%) along with Junior, Colton Boring, who made the Dean’s List by maintaining a QPA of 3.5 or higher.

New “the WORD among us” booklets are on the bulletin tables. This double issue (July/August) would be great to take on vacation and read about the commitment God has made for us; to love us, to care for us, to protect us and to lead us to heaven. The stories and daily meditations are the good news that God is closer to us than we could ever imagine.

Have a Blessed and Safe 4th of July! The Parish Office will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5. Woohoo!!

This is also where Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held on First Fridays and where Devotions to the Immaculate Heart of Mary are held on First Saturdays. The Rosary Prayer Group meets at Holy Spirit every Tuesday at 4PM. Everyone in the Parish grouping is welcome and encouraged to join us in this beautiful little setting for any of these prayerful celebrations!

NEW! MORNING PRAYERS Morning Prayers will begin on Tuesday, July 2 at 8AM in the Oratory. They will be said before morning Masses during the weekdays on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There will be no Morning Prayers on the First Saturdays of each month which are devoted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Please join us for this beautiful, traditional way of starting the day before Mass.

CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP The Men's Fellowship Group will meet on Saturday, July 13 from 9AM to 10AM in the Spirit Room. We will continue to focus on Lesson 49, "Building Up the Body of Christ." All men in the parish grouping are invited to attend.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time • June 30, 2019

It is important that even when on summer vacation you do not forget the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. There is never a vacation from the obligation to attend Mass faithfully on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Remember to thank God for your blessings and ask Him for His divine protection for you and your family. Impress

upon your children the importance of their relationship with God in prayer and locate the nearest Catholic Church and the times for Mass. If you have access to the Internet, just go to WWW.MASSTIMES.ORG, enter the zip code of where you are (or will be) and you can see a listing of churches with Mass times, contact information, parish websites and church locations on a map. Or, if you allow the website to locate you, it will suggest churches near that location. You can also get church information by calling … 1-858-207-6277 and entering a zip code.

CLOVERLEAF FOOD BANK

MANY THANKS to everyone who contributes to the Food Drive each second Sunday of the month and to the Knights of Columbus for coordinating and delivering the food.

The Food Bank helps to serve so many people in need and your contributions provide a great support towards meeting these needs. May God continue to bless you for your generosity and kindness.

This project is sponsored by the Ladies of Charity and the Knights of Columbus of St. Thomas à Becket Church.

THANK YOU to those who helped to advertise our parish festival by displaying one of the red & white yard signs in your neighborhood. Please return those signs to the

church for recycling, at your convenience. Thanks again!

Dear Lord, so many today misunderstand freedom

believing that it is the ability to do whatever we want. Help us always to remember that freedom, true freedom,

is being able to do what we ought to do. That freedom, true freedom,

is not indulging our every want and whim, but instead is the ability to rise above any desires

that are wrong, disordered, dangerous or excessive. Give us the grace always to remember

that true freedom makes us the people you wish us to be, that true freedom brings us closer to you,

and reshapes our world in the likeness of your kingdom. Amen.

PROPER DRESS FOR CHURCH All of us wear more informal clothing during the summer months than we do during the fall and winter. A little common sense and discretion should dictate the way we dress for Church.

Respect the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament

What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd? Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Sacred Scripture, Catholic doctrine, the liturgy of the Church, prayer and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an “atrium,” a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials they use, to help them absorb the most essential proclamations of the Christian faith. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a sensorially rich experience for children from the ages of 3 to 12 years that gives children the opportunity to grow in love and knowledge of God through the Christian tradition. (From www.cgsusa.org) Watch the bulletin for ways that you can help us prepare

our Good Shepherd Atrium for the fall of 2020. What we are collecting this week for the Atrium: -3 small table bells no bigger than 6-8 inches in height and preferably made of metal

-10 wooden serving trays

There has been a lot happening this summer in Faith Formation. The staff Faith Formation team has been busy throughout the month of June completing projects on our campuses as well as within the diocese. Have you heard of the Diocesan Lay Ecclesial Ministry Certification? Jennifer Michalka and Tina Centinaro have completed the work for a second certification. Jennifer who holds a LEM certificate in Youth Ministry has completed two years of study and will be awarded a second one in Religious Education at the commissioning in October. Tina has dual certification in Family and Marriage Ministry and Religious Education. Along with this work, Jennifer continues to advance her studies and attended the annual Catholic Institute for Education and was inspired and is excited about what she learned. Last week Tina completed Part 1 of Level 1 of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and will complete Parts 2 and 3 in July and August. (30 plus hours of training for each part) As we move forward as a Church Alive, our goal is to provide rich, diverse, formation programs for our children and youth and their families and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is part of our catechetical plan.

TRUE FREEDOM As our nation observes Independence Day this Thursday, we call to mind all of the ideals that have made and continue to make the United States a great nation. Perhaps the principle we treasure and guard the most is that of freedom. From the time we were young children, we have been taught that our nation’s founders came to America precisely to establish a society based on the principle that every person ought to be free. However, we must remember what freedom really is and what it is not. Freedom does not consist in merely doing whatever one may feel like doing; rather, true freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to do what is just and right and the opportunity to exercise that power. So, as we celebrate the Fourth of July this Thursday, may we be grateful that in our nation, we have the power and rights necessary to exercise our faith and practice the virtues inherent therein. Any may we also renew our ledge to defend the promote this true notion of freedom with maximum determination.

Diocesan Youth Council: High School sophomores and juniors, sponsored by either their parish grouping or Catholic high school, are invited to apply for the

2019-2020 Diocesan Youth Council. The mission and purpose of the DYC is to gather high school youth from throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh for formation in discipleship, preparation for the apostolate and growth as virtuous, servant leaders culminating with an informed discussion and consultation with the Diocesan bishop and his pastoral staff. Applications are available at www.diopitt.org/dyc and will be accepted as space permits. Please prayerfully consider recommending a youth to apply. The mandatory DYC Retreat will be held on July 14-16 at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center.
