Bishop D’Arcy did an excellent job as the leader of our Diocese. Being responsible for over 150,000 Catholics was not easy. I know Bishop had many weighty decisions to make over the years. He handled these tough decisions with strength, consideration, and grace. Simply, when God called him to serve, Bishop D’Arcy answered God’s call. He was a good and faithful servant of Christ. May Bishop D’Arcy rest in the peace of Christ. Congratulations to our grade 6 girl’s basketball team. ISTEP+ The Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) measures what students know and are able to do at each grade level. Based on Indiana’s Academic Standards, ISTEP+ provides a learning check-up to make sure students are on track and signal whether they need extra help. The test is divided into two sessions: one in March and one at the end of April, beginning of May. All students in grades 3-8 will be testing. PLEASE DO NOT SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS FOR STUDENTS ON THESE DAYS. All students in the state of Indiana in attendance at accredited schools must participate in these assessments. March 4 - March 13, students in grades 3-8 will take the written assessment. Students who are absent for tests will be pulled from classes as time permits for making up tests by March 13. April 29 – May 8, students in grades 3-8 will take a multiple-choice progress assessment. (Several additional days are allowed for making up tests as time permits.) During both of these testing times, grade 3 students will take Math and Language Arts tests. Grade 4 students will take Math, Language Arts, and Science tests. Grade 5 students will take Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies tests. Grade 6 students will take Math, Language Arts, and Science tests. Grade 7 students will take Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies tests. Grade 8 students will take Math and Language Arts tests. At some grade levels the some assessments will be taken online with computers, otherwise, the assessments are of the paper and pencil format. Additionally, on March 19, all grade 3 students will take the IREAD-3 and on May 15-16, all students who are currently taking Algebra I (in grade 8 or 7) will also take an End-of-Course Assessment (ECA) required for high school graduation. Please make every effort to have students present in school and on time during these testing sessions. Doctor appointments should be avoided during test windows if at all possible. Making up tests is very difficult and students tend to not perform as well as usual. We try to test only in the mornings, however, make-up tests and online assessments may also be in the afternoons. At some grade levels, only two days will be needed for testing, at other grades three or four days are needed. The winner will be chosen following sales on Monday, Feb. 11. CONGRATULATIONS! – The winner of the 42” Vizio television was Theresa Leeuw! Theresa has been a long time customer and a volunteer for the SCRIP program. Congratulations Theresa. Schedule Note – Due to a change in the St. Charles School schedule, there will be no SCRIP sales on Friday, Feb. 22. Sales will take place on Thursday, Feb. 21. Please mark your calendar for this change. (Volunteers, please note this change) SCRIP Credit – The SCRIP credit statements have been available since the 2nd week of January. If you have not received yours, please stop by the SCRIP sales table. This is credit that you have earned by purchasing SCRIP and there are many ways that you can use your credit; so, claim yours soon. 2012 Summary – The numbers have been tallied and 2012 is officially in the books. The following is a summary of SCRIP’s sales and profit for 2012.

-‐ December sales (always the most successful month) - $347,474.83. -‐ Total SCRIP sales for 2012 - $2,790,211.22. -‐ Total loaded onto Kroger Cards 11/26-12/22/2012 - $88,305.21. -‐ Total loaded onto Kroger Cards for 2012 - $1,189,936.36. -‐ Total SCRIP sales for 2012 - $3,980,147.58. -‐ Total profit from SCRIP sales for 2012 - $184,760.01 -‐ Average percentage of parishioners using SCRIP – 22.3% -‐ Percentage of school families using SCRIP – 67%

The most significant figures are the total profit and the percentage of parishioners using SCRIP. If less than 25% of the parish generates nearly $200,000 in profit, imagine the things our parish could do with the SCRIP profit if more of the parish participated. Remember, this fund-raiser benefits the entire parish, not just the school and unlike other fund-raisers, it really costs you nothing. You purchase the gift cards and use them at face value. It is through the contributions of the merchants that the profit is generated. VOLUNTEERS: Thank you for enduring the cold temperatures during the last few weeks during SCRIP sales. Hopefully, spring will be here soon. Center for Research on Educational Opportunity February 8, 2013 Dear St. Charles Borromeo School Parents of Middle School Students (Grades 6-8): We are writing to ask you and your child to participate in an interview for an ongoing research project through the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity at the University of Notre Dame. In this interview we would like to get the perspectives of you and your child on St. Charles Borromeo School’s participation in the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program. The goal of this research project is to learn more about how the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program (school voucher) is affecting private schools. This is an independent, objective research study. Your child’s school is one of several in the South Bend-Fort Wayne diocese that have been participating in the study. We would like to hear from families who are receiving Choice Scholarships as well as families who are not. We will talk with you first, followed by a conversation with your child. The interview process should take no more than 60-75 minutes. This interview is voluntary, of course, and it is up to you whether or not to participate. Your responses and your child’s responses will be used for research purposes only. This means your identities and your comments will be kept confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside the research team without your permission. If you are willing for you and your child to participate, we ask that you please contact us so that a member of our research team can follow up with you to schedule an interview for you and your child. The interviews will take place at St. Charles School in late-February. Please contact us by Friday, February 15, 2013 by e-mail [email protected] or phone (574) 631-9486. In your e-mail or phone message, please be sure to include your first and last name, school your child attends, the best phone number or e-mail to reach you, and the best time to reach you. We will follow up with you shortly thereafter. We look forward to your participation and assistance with our research! The insights of you and your child will be valued and greatly appreciated. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns. Sincerely,

R. Joseph Waddington, Ph.D. Postdoctoral Research Associate Center for Research on Educational Opportunity
