FOCUS: God’s love is like a raging fire! In today’s Gospel, Jesus outlines many of the ways in which his coming into the world will cause division, and not peace. He comes to set the earth on fire—not to de-stroy it, but to emblaze it with the fullness of God’s love for us. The divisiveness arises not from Jesus himself, but from peoples’ response to him: choosing either to build up that fire, or to tamp it down. Let us be those who feed the fire of the kingdom, not extinguish it. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Jeremiah is imprisoned under the authority of King Zedekiah because the people are upset by his words. But a court official convinces the king to release him. The writer of Hebrews challenges the community to rid themselves of every burden and sin and to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples he has come not to establish peace, but divi-sion. REFLECTION: In the beginning of his gospel Luke gives us the story of Jesus’ birth, with the warming scene of the angels singing, "Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to those whom God favors." It is clear from today’s passage that the peace Jesus brings to his followers is not the peace of comfort and the well-being the world desires. Following him will not be a life of calm and tranquility. So we ask ourselves: What makes us uncomfortable about Jesus’ teachings?

Does what he asks of us set us apart from those who know us?

What Can We Do? The Role of the Laity in a time of crisis As the Church undergoes this period of profound crisis, many of us feel helpless as we watch a drama unfold that we can do nothing about. But the truth is that we are not powerless. The history of the Church tells us that lay people have a role to play in the Church’s times of turmoil. Join us for an evening of reflection on the mission of the laity in times of ecclesial crisis and learn what you can do to cooperate with Christ’s action to purify and heal His Church. Speaker, Meghan Cokeley will speak at 6 different locations and the closest one to us is Mother Boniface Center on Nov. 4th at 7:00pm. Please RSVP at phillyevang.org/events.
