From Father Mike
This Memorial Day weekend certainly has a different feel than previous years in
the middle of this COVID-19 pandemic. While it was initially meant for military
personnel who died in war, we now also add medical personnel and those who
worked closely with the public. I think about those serving who risk their lives as we
prepare to make Sunday Mass available in person. Please note that the first point
made by the bishop is that “those persons 65 and older and those with underlying
medical conditions are urged not to attend any liturgies or sacraments at this
time.” This straightforward guidance follows the bishop’s guiding principle that
“We will rely on the medical and scientific community as our primary resource for
information.” And we know that the death rate or chance for longer term effects
are much higher for those in these at-risk groups. I’ve already had people who
are well over 65 years old or have other health issues who seem to think that it
would be fine for them to come back to Mass when it is available. This would fall
under the category of “Just because you want to do it does not mean it is a good
idea.”
I am urging everyone to pray about whether they should be coming to Sunday
Mass. Remember that the bishop has lifted the obligation to attend Sunday Mass
until August 15, so it is not a sin if you were to stay home. Today’s second reading
comes with Paul’s greeting to the Ephesians, “May the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of glory, give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation.” Discerning
our attendance at Mass requires us to seek the Spirit of wisdom and ask, “What
does God want us to do?” instead of “What do I want to do?” Part of our
prayerful deliberation is a reminder that the reason we maintain physical distance
is to minimize our chance for getting the virus and thus adding to an already
burdened care system. Instead of being restrictive to older people, we are being
asked to do what we can to protect them.
Ya he tenido
