Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

PASSION The contrast between the processional reading in today’s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc .

Excerpt from the Diary of Blessed Sister Faustina Kowalska: Novena to The Divine Mercy which Jesus instructed me to write down and make before the Feast of Mercy. It begins on Good Friday. I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw therefrom strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death. On each day you will bring to My Heart a different group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy, and I will bring all these souls into the house of My Father. You will do this in this life and in the next. I will deny nothing to any soul whom you will bring to the fount of My mercy. On each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My bitter Passion, for graces for these souls.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the “Road of Sorrows,” in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today’s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion’s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It’s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the pilgrim’s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye. Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co, Inc.

Weekly Reflection from Father Isnardo

Palm Sunday Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Welcome to Holy Week! We just listened to St. Mark's account of Jesus' Passion. It begins with an act of extravagance: a woman brings an alabaster jar containing a perfumed oil worth about year's wages. The alabaster itself is valuable - no doubt you have seen that wonderful translucent stone. Well, the woman breaks the alabaster jar and lets the oil flow over Jesus. The people react, "Why this waste?" If you are like me, you hate waste. I take home food from funeral buffets. I pick up pennies. If I find a dime, it makes my day! Frugality has its place but we must admit: Our God is a God of extravagance - of seeming waste. Some look out on the enormous universe and ask: How can we be the only planet with intelligent life? It seems unreasonable that God would create so much for little creatures like us. I don't know the answer, but I do know that our God is a God of extravagance. In Holy Week we see the greatest example of extrava-gance. Jesus could redeem us with a drop of blood, but he chooses the cross. I have a friend with diabetes. He has a device to get a few milligrams of blood each morning. Jesus could save us with even less, but as we see this week, blood flows from his back, his hands, his feet, his head. As we have learned during Lent we need a new mind and heart to see the reality of Jesus and his cross - his extravagant love. For sure, we ask, "Why this waste?" Why such extravagance? We will get an answer next Sunday. It might surprise you. For now I will say this: Don't throw away your palm branch. (Smile) It signals a

surprising victory... Amen Father Isnardo

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE It’s been four years since our campaign began. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all who have faithfully fulfilled their pledge and to all who continue to honor their pledge with monthly payments. After careful review of our records it looks like we will be short of meeting our goal by $140,000.00; this due to people who made a pledge but have stopped making their monthly payments. Please . . . We urge those who haven’t been making their payments to restart their payments, even if you cannot make the full payment; partial payments would be greatly appreciated. Remember, our Parish belongs to all of us; therefore, it is the responsibility of all of us to take care of it.

(sonrisa)

Señala una victoria sorprendente... Amén.

Padre Isnardo
