If you enter the church near the Grotto of Mary and St. Bernadette statues, you have no doubt passed the two batches of prairie grass that look like grains of wheat. In the middle of them is a huge Tiger Lily that has escaped from the Grotto. Have watched it grow since it first sprouted early in the spring. I've debated whether to cut it down or just let it be. I remember asking Joe LeBeau if it was a weed and he said that anything is a weed if it is not where you want it to be. I decided to let it be and to see just what it would become. It is going to be a huge Tiger Lily. I think.

In today's Gospel, Jesus speaks of wheat being sown in the planter’s fields and then overnight a villain coming and sowing weeds in the field. The farmer is asked by his disciples whether the weeds should be ripped out and he replies no, saying that this action would destroy them both. Rather he encouraged those them to grow side-by-side until the final harvest. Jesus likens this to the world and God as the master planter. This imagery has often been used in relation to the Church, meaning you and me. I have often reflected on the need to allow time for conversion, growth and change. To expect a pure Church of wheat, in all its entirety, all the time, is unrealistic. Yet, to desire a pure Church of wheat is very much according to the heart of God. Conversion of hearts takes time. If you are like me, our own hearts are often a mixture of weeds and wheat being slowly tended to by the grace of God and our own attentiveness. The final purification will probably not take place until the other side of life when God, who is alone the master gardener, takes one last walk through the soul and completes the tending. Sometimes you and I are not as merciful with others as we are with ourselves when viewing the weeds and wheat around us or within us. When I am confronted by this in my own heart, on my better days I give thanks to the grace of God that has revealed this to me, and on my worse days I ignore the voice. Giving God time to tend the soul within and around us is an act of humility and trust before the providential care of God for his creation. It is an exercise in patience. Sometimes, what we perceived to be a weed is actually a Tiger Lily and it just takes time for it to be revealed. Where do you see weeds and wheat in your life? Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

16th SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIMES PAGE 3

Spirit & Life 16th Sunday of Ordinary Times

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field… He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” MATTHEW 13:24, 37,38 As children of God, we are all “good seeds”. We are blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we spend time in prayer every day, use our skills to help others and share our finan-cial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our example of gratitude and generosity we sow “good seeds” on earth and ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

St. Mary Magdalene: The Apostle to the Apostles Adam Horn, Director of Religious Education I am cheating a little bit on this bulletin article since it will not be happening over the weekend, but the feast of St. Mary Magdalene will be on Wednesday, July 22 (so maybe this will just give everyone a chance to prepare to celebrate). Mary was an early follower and financial supporter of Jesus and the twelve Apostles, and it is said that Jesus exercised seven demons from her (Lk 8:1-3). She is mentioned by name twelve times in the Gospels, which may not seem like much but it is more often than most of the Apostles. All four Gospels state that even though the Apostles all abandoned Jesus during his crucifixion (except John), Mary Magdalene was there. Again, all four Gospels tell us that Mary was the first to discover the risen Christ, and it was she who told the others about what she witnessed. This is the reason that the Church calls St. Mary Magdalene the “Apostle of the Apostles.” The word “apostle” in Greek means “one who is sent.” Mary, after discovering that Jesus had risen from the dead, was sent to the apostles to tell them. She was the first witness to the Resurrection and the first messenger of the Good News, that Jesus Christ had risen from the dead. Because Mary Magdalene first saw the risen Lord in a garden (Jn 20:15), the Church Fathers drew a parallel with Eve. Pope St. Gregory the Great once stated in a homily: “Indeed because a woman offered death to a man in Paradise, a woman announces life to the men from the tomb.” (XL Hom. In Evangelia, lib. II, Hom. 25) Eve spread death in a place where there was life, while Mary spread the message of new life from a tomb, a place of death. She played a pivotal role in Jesus’ ministry before the crucifixion, and she continued as an Apostle of the Apostles after his Resurrection in new life. St. Mary Magdalene, pray for us!
