There is a beautiful play on the Hebrew word ruah which is the same for breath, wind, and spirit. If you recall the Baltimore Catechism definition of a sacrament, what we have here is a sacrament in one verse: an outward sign (He breathed on them) instituted by Christ (He who did the breathing) to give grace (receive the Holy Spirit). 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” The disciples (and their successors by extension) have the authority to forgive sins in Jesus’ name. The mission of reconciliation was so important to God that He sent His Son to institute the practice. Only through reconciliation with God can we act as His sons and daughters; including eat the family meal (Eucharist) which binds us all together. “I don’t go to a man to confess to my sins; only God can forgive sins” says the Protestant. “Neither do I” responds the Catholic, “I go to God’s duly appointed and commissioned representative who was given the responsibility of forgiving (or binding) my sins as God works through him.” James 5:13-16 says “Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders (presbyters) of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects.” Notice that you are to call the presbyters (this is the root word for priests) and confess your sins to him. Why do I confess to a priest? Because the Bible (and therefore, God) tells me to!

Gospel - John 20:19-23 This reading should also sound familiar as we heard it last on the 2nd Sunday of Easter (Cycle B). What we hear about is Jesus’ first appearance to the apostles. 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, The first Easter Sunday. All Jesus’ appearances after Easter which are dated (time coded) are on a Sunday. when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst Through locked doors. The disciples had barricaded themselves in the Upper Room because they were afraid that what had happened to Jesus would happen to them also. After all, they had been His followers. and said to them, “Peace be with you.” Shalom. An ordinary greeting which the Israelite conceived as a gift of Yahweh. The word “Shalom” does not translate well; peace is usually used in English translations but it does not connote the rich meaning: completeness, perfection, a condition in which nothing is lacking. 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The wounds of crucifixion. There is no indication that, like Thomas, the others probed the wounds with their fingers. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. All was not lost after all; their leader had returned. 21 (Jesus) said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Jesus was sent with authority to bring about healing and repentance; to heal the Church through forgiveness of sins. The sinful nature of man is what had kept him from God all through the Old Covenant. He is sending them with the same authority with which He was given. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit.

5. Mother of Good Counsel

Mary was given this name after this painting was said to be miraculous. According to tradition, the townfolk heard suddenly “exquisite music” and a mysterious cloud descended and obliterated an unfinished wall of the parish. The cloud dissipated and revealed the beautiful fresco of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child.

6. Virgin Most Merciful

Mary is full of grace, mercy and compassion, she is not only able, but willing to supply mercy to all who invoke her sweet name. Mercy is “a heart for the miserable” and Mary has a particular sympathy and compassion for those suffering souls in Purgatory. She presents our prayers, along with hers, to her Son to release the souls from Purgatory.

Mother is the name for God on the lips and in the hearts of little children. —William Makepeace Thackeray

7. Mirror of Justice

Just as a mirror reflects your image, Mary was the reflection of Jesus, the one who came to justify us all. Justice is the perfect state of the soul, completion of all virtues. And just as a clean, flawless mirror reflects a perfect image, she reflected the virtues of Jesus perfectly.

8. Seat of Wisdom

Mary is the Seat of Wisdom because wisdom became incarnate in her son Jesus whom she carried. She also possessed and practiced true wisdom, not the wisdom of this world.

All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. —Attributed to Abraham Lincoln

9. Mystical Rose

Mary has shown us that the rose is her favorite flower, through the mysterious roses that Juan Diego picked before giving him her image on his tilma, to the garland of roses she wore during her apparitions at La Sal-lette, to the beautiful roses she brought at Lourdes, Pontmain, Pellevoisin, Beauaing and Banneaux. It is said, for every Hail Mary we say, is like placing a rose at her feet. 10. Tower of David

The Tower of David was one of great strength and beauty and used for the defense of the city of Jerusalem during King David’s reign. Mary is a symbol of the tower because of the virtues which she presented in beauty and strength. She also defended and protected her Son, and continues to defend and protect us, His brothers and sisters.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is over. “Mothering Sunday” was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their “Mother Church.” Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother’s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. “Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I send

them into the world.” Disciple means “one who follows.” The disciples followed Jesus. They chose to follow him because of his words and deeds; because his deeds were consistent with his words. His words were true because his words were God’s words. He showed them his love for others and then told them that God’s love is more that we can know or imagine. He taught them that as the Father loves them, they must love one another. But Jesus knew his deeds and words were disturbing the Jewish and Roman leaders and that they were threatened by the number of people who were listening to Jesus and beginning to follow him; who were beginning to realize that God’s law of love is truth and is greater and superior to any man made law. Apostle is “one who is sent.” Jesus prays to the Father as he sends his disciples into the world as apostles to teach the truth by what they say and do. At our Baptism we are consecrated in the truth and are sent into the world to teach the truth by what we say and do.

MISSION STATEMENT Today we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke’s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark’s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus’ name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ—a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our par-ishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ’s messianic mission on earth. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
