Jesus the SAVIOUR ,

It was 3 days after Jesus had been crucified,

Some women, including Mary Magdalene, were

on their way to the tomb.

They were going to prepare Jesus’ body for

burial.

They wondered who was going to roll the stone away from the tomb.

already been moved!

They entered the tomb and saw a man dressed

in a white robe.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus but he is not

here. He is risen!

Go and tell his disciples that Jesus is going to

Galilee. ST BART’S KIDS on SUNDAYS \\ October 4, 2020 2

young man dressed in a white robe. He was sitting on the right side. They were

alarmed.

Tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There

St Bart’s Kids Small Group Session Outline

Main Point: Jesus is our Saviour, because he defeated death and rose to life again.

Discussion Questions Read Mark 16:1-3 from the Bible Story (page 1)1. Why were the women going to a tomb? (On Friday before, Jesus was killed on a cross. They were going to anoint Jesus’

body. This is not like the Egyptians embalming - but using spices for fragrance, to show how much they loved Jesus.)

2. What do you think they expected to find? (They expected to find Jesus’ body.)

3. Where are the 12 disciples? (Nowhere to be found. There weren’t even around to help roll the stone away. These women watched as Jesus was crucified and died, and saw where he was buried. They were the first to the tomb in the morning.)

4. Did Jesus’ disciples expect that Jesus would die? (Jesus told the disciples three times that he would suffer, be rejected, killed, and three days later rise again. But even though Jesus told them what would happen, they didn’t really understand. This was not how they thought Jesus would defeat the enemy.)

Read Mark 16:4-8 from the Bible Story (pages 2-3)5. What clues do we get that this is not a human scheme, but God’s plan? (The heavy stone is already rolled away, and the

women are greeted by an angel, and Jesus’ body is nowhere to be found. Women are also the first eye witnesses - which is very surprising as women were never used as witnesses by Jewish people.)

6. What does Jesus’ resurrection mean? (Resurrection means that God raised Jesus from the dead. His resurrection is the defeat of evil and death forever. The disciples wanted Jesus to defeat Rome, but Jesus defeats evil forever. He is the true Saviour. His resurrection also gives us a glimpse into what our future with Jesus will be like. Just as Jesus has a resurrected body, that is what we will have too.)

7. What difference does it make to you that Jesus rose from the dead? (This means that we love and follow a living God. Jesus is not dead - he is alive!)

8. If a friend asked you ‘Who is Jesus?’, what would you say?

Bible Focus Mark 16:1-8

Theme Focus Saviour

Explanation of the Mark Series The Gospel of Mark is an action-packed account of Jesus’ life. In 16 brief chapters, Mark reports the significant claims and actions of Jesus, giving special attention to the events leading up to his death. Mark shows us that Jesus isn’t just one dimensional, but the fulfilment of the greatest hopes for all of humanity. Over 12 weeks, we’ll be exploring who Jesus is and why he matters to us today. This will help us to answer: Who do you say that I am?

Prayer Gracious God, thank you that we can know, love, and follow your Son Jesus. We thank you for your rescue plan, that led to Jesus dying on the cross and being raised to life forever! We thank you that Jesus is the forgiver, healer, grower, king, messiah, son, judge, ransom, teacher, and our Saviour. Please help us to know and follow Jesus with all of our life. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
