This Week the Church Celebrates...

September 20th, Memorial of Sts Andrew Kim Tai-gon, Priest and Paul Chong Hasang and Companion Martyrs - Andrew Kim Taegon was born to Korean nobility, and his parents converted when he was 15-years old. He traveled over 1000 miles to study in a seminary and became the first native Korean priest. He was tortured and beheaded in 1846. Paul Choñg Hasang was a Korean Catholic lay leader who defended the faith before the government of Korea, and reunited the Christians in the midst of terrible persecutions, encouraging them to stay strong in the faith. He was martyred in 1839. During the years 1791, 1801, 1827, 1839, 1846, and 1866 over 10,000 people were martyred in Korea.

September 21st, Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and evangelist - St. Matthew is one of the four Gospel writers and one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus. Matthew was a tax collector who dropped his way of life to follow Christ. Though little is known about his personal life, the significance of his written contribution to Christianity cannot be overstated. Matthew's Gospel is the first book of the New Testament and is the most widely quoted gospel in non-canonical literature.

September 23rd, Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest - Also known as St. Padre Pio, Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), was an Italian priest who received the stigmata - wounds of the cross - in 1919. He was well known for his piety, charity, and the quality of his preaching. Tradition also attributes some miraculous healings with his ministry. He is the patron saint of civil defense volunteers, adolescents, and the village of Pietrelcina.

Religious Education Catechetical Sunday was celebrated at St. Augustine last Sunday by commissioning our volunteer catechists - Religious Education teachers - at the 8am Mass. After Mass there were refreshments in the center and a period of training for those catechists working with our younger parishioners in grades 1-10.

I am grateful to the many catechists who came to the Mass and training, to Fr. Art for making the Mass such a memorable experience, to Fr. Peter for offering words of welcome prior to our training and to Janice Zackular, Cheryl Germino, Joanne Heim, Pat Ingram, and Lorraine DeLucia for all their help in making the event such a success.

~Bridget Rao, DRE

Classes begin this week! Class schedules are posted on the parish website by grade, for example grade 2 schedules can be found on the page for Grades 1-3 or by searching for "class schedules".

Each year on the first day of school, all the classes gather together for a whole school activity. This is a great tradition where all the students come together for some first day of school fun. We are excited for the incredible school year ahead. With many new students and returning students and faculty and staff, it is sure to be a wonderful year! Welcome back everyone!

P rayer for Our Troops Around the World

“Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. We ask this in the

name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.” We especially remember Michael Clark, Adam Devine, Joshua Devine, James Gaffney, Saverio Maldari, Sean Muschette, Trevor Powers, Tyler Rioux, and Jeff Sirois.

We pray for those who are ill and pained in body, heart and mind, especially remembering Geraldine D'Amico, Erin Metayer, Concetta Stennick, Augustine Sharry. We commend to our Divine Lord all of our aged people and those residing in nursing homes.

Around the Parish Supporting the Chronically and Seriously Ill and Their Families, is a program being offered at St. Augustine Parish by Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services. It is not exclusively for the seriously ill. Planning for a future that may include serious illness makes us much better prepared should something happen down the road. Please join us in Fr. Smith Hall Wednesday, September 28th at 6:30 pm as we learn more about how to designate a health care agent; how and when to ask for palliative care; what should be included in your advanced care planning documents and other topics related to your health and well- being. Brochures are available in the back of the church if you’d like to learn more about this free program. Hope to see you there. 2016 Tootsie Roll Drive - The Knights of Columbus will be conducting their annual Tootsie Roll Drive after each Mass next weekend of September 24th and 25th. This drive benefits people with physical and intellectual disabilities in our community. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Last year your contributions helped in funding Knight grants of $6,000 for Ironstone Farms and another $3,000 for groups working with handicap children. For more details on the drive, see the Knights website at www.kofc1078. The next Protecting God's Children Training presented locally is on: Tuesday, September 20th 6:30 pm and Monday, October 3rd at 6:30 pm at St Theresa Church in

St. Augustine Parish, Andover, MA

The Society of St. Vincent dePaul was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam in France and subsequently founded in the United States in 1845. It is now an international organization present with chapters in 149 countries. The St. Augustine conference of men and women volunteer to help others in need or those living with very limited means. We grow spiritually by offering person to person our time, compassionate listening, and service as we are able. We look to see "the face of Christ" in those

we serve as Jesus taught us when he said, "whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do to me."

This Wednesday, September 21st, at 7pm in Fr. Smith Hall, our conference is holding a Night of Recruitment for interested men and women in our parish. You will meet a dedicated group of Vincentians to introduce who we are, what we do, and then have the opportunity to join us and make a difference! Not only will you be helping those in need, but you will also find yourself growing in God's love, and the desire to share that love with others. Hope to see you there! Questions, info, RSVP at 978-475-0050 x49.

Sacrament of Anointing - Sacrament of Healing

Beginning, Saturday, October 1st, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at Mass once each month. This will be offered on a rotating basis so that the opportunity to receive the Sacrament will be presented at each of the Sunday liturgies. The first opportunity will be at the 4pm Mass on Saturday, October 1st. We ask that those who wish to receive the Sacrament sit at the end of the pew on the center aisle.

The origin of this sacrament is in the healing ministry of Jesus who went throughout the towns of first century Palestine touching the sick and the

possessed with God's healing love. Quite often, those who suffered from illnesses were ostracized from their communities as they were considered unclean. This pain of isolation exacerbated the suffering that they were already experiencing from the illness itself. Healed by Jesus, they were not only restored to physical health, they were also restored to their families and communities.

Jesus also commissioned his disciples to heal. The scriptural foundation for the Sacrament of Anointing is found in James 5:14-15 "Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven."

By the Middle Ages, this sacrament had lost its association with healing and was viewed as a means of purifying the soul so that the prayers associated with it emphasized forgiveness and personal salvation thus establishing it as a "last rite". The Second Vatican Council restored the original character of the sacrament so that it is once again associated with the healing power of Christ. The faithful are strongly encouraged to receive this Sacrament when they are dangerously ill due to sickness, injury, or old age, or prior to surgery for a serious condition. It may be repeated if a different illness is experienced or if the illness/condition becomes more serious.

The prayers of the sacrament include petitions for physical healing but it is important to understand that God's healing occurs in many ways - healing may be physical, spiritual, and/or emotional.

Families are strongly urged NOT to wait until the point of death or near death before requesting the sacrament for a loved one as sacraments may only be conferred upon the living. The Sacrament may be received at one of our monthly Masses or may be scheduled by calling the parish office at 978-475-0050.

Featured Ministry Prayer Line and Rosary Group

St. Augustine Parish is truly blessed to have more than 30 ministries which provide a variety of services within our parish and throughout our local community. Our parishioners truly understand what it means to respond to the call to service and to fulfill the corporal works of mercy. Each week, a different ministry is featured here. Visit staugustineparish.org for a complete list of ministries.

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have to minister to, not only those close to us, but to anyone in the world. Our prayer Line ministry consists of individuals who pray ceaselessly for the intentions of others. If you would like to join them or if you have a specific intention for which you would like them to pray, please contact Patsy Gurry at 978-475-1508.

Our Rosary Group meets every Tuesday at 3pm in the church to pray for world peace, the conversion of sinners, and the intentions listed in our book of intentions located on the offertory table in the church. They pray three sets of mysteries and a chaplet of Divine Mercy. All are welcome to join!
