Dear Community of St. Augustine:

This weekend we celebrate our Patron Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. The readings of the Word of God are appropriate for this feast. Saint Matthew’s Gospel let us hear Jesus advising His disciples not to call teacher, father, or doctor of the law, in other words, Rabbi, to anybody in this world.

How should we take Jesus’ words? If we would take this Gospel literally, we would not be able to call our father “father”, our teacher “teacher and so forth. I think that when Jesus says, “The greatest among you must be your servant” (Mt 23:11), He is calling us to reflect about the virtue of humility.

Jesus wants us to remember that God should be what matters most in our lives. Anyone in a position of authority, should be serving and should do it standing firmly on the ground. The meaning of humility is related with its etymological roots. This word comes from the Latin “humilitas,” whose root is “humus” which means ‘ground’.

Jesus gave us the best example of service, He gave everything, even His life, for us. After his conversion, St. Augustine understood that humble service is the way to God. In his wisdom, he taught us: “Are you looking for ladders to go up to Him? Look for the tree of humility and you are there.” As the Gospel let us hear Jesus saying, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Mt 23:12).

This Saturday, August 29, our Bishop, John Noonan, celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. To maintain the duly social distancing because of COVID – 19, this Mass took place at 11:00 a.m. just for the candidates to the Sacrament, their sponsors and immediate family. The community was able to join us through Facebook and YouTube. I congratulate all those who were confirmed and trust the Holy Spirit will continue to manifest Himself in their lives.

I want to express my gratitude to Deacon Félix Montañez for the years of Service to our Community. This is the last Sunday he will be with us. He and his wife, Digna have decided to start a new stage in their lives and to dedicate more time to their grandchildren, and for this reason they are leaving Orlando. We ask God to bless them and our prayers will accompany them. I hope they will visit us whenever they are in our area, they will always be welcome in our Parish.

May Saint Augustine intercede for us.

Querida comunidad de San Agustín:

Este fin de semana celebramos a nuestro Santo Patrón Agustín, Obispo y Doctor de la Iglesia. Las lecturas de la Palabra de Dios son apropiadas para esta fiesta. El Evangelio de San Mateo nos presenta a Jesús aconsejando a Sus discípulos que no deben llamar a nadie en este mundo maestro, padre o doctor de la ley, es decir Rabí.

¿Cómo entender las palabras de Jesús? Si interpretáramos este Evangelio literalmente, no podríamos llamar a nuestro progenitor, “padre”; al que nos enseña en la escuela, “maestro”, etc. Creo que Jesús nos llama a reflexionar en la virtud de la humildad cuando nos dice: “El más grande de ustedes que sea su servidor” Mt 23, 11.

Jesús quiere que recordemos que Dios debe ser lo más importante en nuestra vida. Cualquier persona que ocupe un cargo de autoridad, debe servir y debe hacerlo con los pies en la tierra. El significado de humildad se relaciona con su origen etimológico. La palabra proviene del latín “humilĭtas”, que a su vez proviene de la raíz “humus”, que quiere decir 'tierra'.

Jesús nos dio el mejor ejemplo de servicio, Él lo entregó todo, hasta su propia vida por nosotros. San Agustín, desde su conversión a Cristo, comprendió que el servicio humilde es el camino para llegar a Dios. En su sabiduría, Agustín nos enseñó: “¿Buscas escaleras para subir hasta Él? Busca el madero de la humildad y ya llegaste”. Como dice Jesús en el evangelio: “el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido”. Mt 23, 12.

Este sábado, 29 de agosto nuestro Obispo John Noonan celebró el Sacramento de la Confirmación. Para mantener la debida distancia social debido al COVID-19, esta misa fue celebrada a las 11:00AM solamente para los candidatos a la Confirmación, sus padrinos y familia inmediata. La comunidad pudo unirse a la misma por medio de Facebook y YouTube. Felicito a todos los Confirmados y confío en que el Espíritu Santo continúe manifestándose en su vida.

Quiero expresarle mi agradecimiento al diacono Felix Montañez por sus años de servicio en nuestra comunidad. Este es el último domingo que Felix estará con nosotros. Él y su esposa, Digna, han tomado la decisión de comenzar una nueva etapa en sus vidas y dedicarles más tiempo a sus nietos, por este motivo se mudan de Orlando. Les deseamos la bendición de Dios y los acompañamos con nuestras oraciones. Espero nos visiten cuando estén en nuestra área, la parroquia de San Agustín siempre les dará la bienvenida.

Que San Agustín interceda por nosotros.
