Breaking Open the Word Epiphany of the Lord

The Cambridge Dictionary defines the adjective “overjoyed” simply as “extremely happy.” Certainly for Cath-olics, “overjoyed” is an appropriate word to describe the Christmas Season-- for indeed, our savior has been born who is Christ and Lord! On this Epiphany of the Lord, we remember the first people who were ever overjoyed for the newborn king. Although exact details of the Magi are still debated, tradition says that three lucky wisemen presented gifts to the infant Jesus. We can look to them as inspiration for our own Journey with and towards Christ, as we begin a new calendar year. They believed in God’s words through the prophets, they diligently sought for Jesus, they put their trust in God rather than man, and they prostrated and did the Lord homage. To the God who is infinitely generous to us in our lives, the example of the Magi is a perfect model of how we ought to manifest our gratitude back to Him. Seek Jesus in everything that we do, be cautious of the secular man-made world, turn to Scripture to guide our next steps, and above all, prostrate our-selves (if not physically, then spiritually) as a sign of our ut-most humility and submission to our Lord and Savior.

Deacon Keith Cabiles

DAILY PRAYER

This week is a time with two special Sundays book-ending the week. Both celebrations offer an "epiphany," an under-standing and insight into the essence of who Jesus really is. When the Wisemen visit the poorest of families and find the baby Jesus, they have a clearer idea of what kind of king he will be. At the Baptism of the Lord the following Sun-day, Jesus is baptized and the skies open and the voice of God pro-claims, "This is my be-loved Son." More than just a prophet, this spe-cial relationship with God is made manifest in that moment. How can we make this week a special one as the Christmas season draws to a close? In some parts of the world daylight is plentiful right now, but for many of us the days are short and the dark of night surrounds us many hours each day. This could be the week to reflect on that darkness and the light that Jesus brings into our hearts. Each morning as our feet touch the floor next to our beds, we can open our hands briefly in the darkness and ask God to show us the light in our lives. Gratitude is a wonderful way to pray and to recognize the light we sometimes don't notice in our lives. Maybe in this final week of Christmas, we can light a candle at dinner and remember a special blessing we have been given or something we are grateful for in our lives. Dear Lord, You came to your disciples when they felt alone on the stormy waters and comforted them with your presence. Be with me today and let my heart be touched by the the love you so lavishly give to me. Let me remember to turn to you in my fears and darkness and know that you will heal me. Damien Crosses Damien Crosses are one-of-a-kind crea-tions made by one of our parishioners, artist JoFay Umbhau, from driftwood, sea glass and shells. No two are alike and they are a true masterpiece of the sea and land for your island home or for our visitors to take home as a beautiful remembrance of Ha-waii. They are sold after morning Masses most Sundays and in the parish office.

Morning reflection for all lay ministers Save the date! There will be a morning reflection on ministry for all lay ministers — lectors, Eucharistic minsters, ushers, out-reach — on Saturday, Jan 25. The 9 a.m. to noon program will be led by Fr. Alfred Guerrero, pastor at Holy Spirit Parish/Newman Center on the importance of and meaning of ministry. Lay ministers will be commissioned at the Jan. 25/26 Sunday liturgies. Jan. 26 is the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time, which hs been declared Word of God Sunday by Pope Francis.

Annual Red Mass

Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at 9:00 a.m.

Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace The guest speaker will be Kainoa Fukumoto, founder and presi-dent of EPIC Ministry, the largest Catholic community of young adults in the Diocese of Honolulu, and principal of St. Michael School in Waialua. He will speak on “Millennials and Their Im-pact on Church and Government.” Bishop Larry Silva will be the principal celebrant. The Red Mass has been a tradition in Hawaii since 1955. Cus-tomarily celebrated each January, the month when the State Leg-islature opens, this public liturgy is the church’s prayer to the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance for our islands’ public servants.

Healing & hope—a retreat Longing…healing…hope. These simple words hold special meaning in the Christmas season. They also speak to the heart of a mother (and her loved ones) who have experienced the sor-row of an unexpected miscarriage of her unborn baby. On January 19, 2020 from 3 to 8 p.m. a retreat “Lei Poina Ole” (In memory of our unborn keiki) will be held at St. Antho-ny Retreat Center. Facilitated by health care professionals and Catholic ministry leaders, “Lei Poina Ole” offers a time of peace to remember and honor unborn babies in a peaceful and support-ive environment. Persons of all faiths as well as “seekers” are welcome. Couples are encouraged to attend together if possible Lei Poina Ole is a program under Malama o Na Keiki - a cul-tural nursing program belonging to Caring for Hawaii Neonates, a 501c3 that enhances the care for prenatal to kupuna, especially high risk and fetal loss, through collaborations, direct services and education. To ensure a more intimate experience among retreatants, regis-tration is limited to 40 persons, so register today! Parish Debt Reduction Collection Over the years, the Diocese has asked that parishes do an attendance count for the month of October. For the last two years there has a dramatic drop of 2,000 people attending St. Augustine for Sunday liturgy. With that said, it means This year especially with the additional challenges of unexpected payables, we are doubly challenged. Other pastors are facing the same dilemma even with a larger stable community. St. Augustine is quite unique and different since we have a very small base community. Therefore, the Debt Reduction collection will continue as it is additional income that we would not otherwise receive. Mahalo to our parishioners who use the parish steward-ship envelope system, especially for increasing your gift to the parish. Mahalo nui loa to all who continue to assist our parish during these times of greater challenge, may you all be blessed for what you share. Aloha, Fr. Lane
