SUNDAY THOUGHT
James 1:17-18, 21-22, 27
The Apostle, St. James, in our second reading for this
Sunday, reminds us that we must be, as he puts it,
“doers of the Word”. He goes on to say that we are
deluding ourselves if we think we have done our duty
only as “hearers of the Word”. All of this refers to the
“Word” of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. James’ words are
a warning to all of us that the easiest person to fool is
ourselves. Self-deception is a problem that confronts all
of us. If we truly want to grow in our self-
understanding, we need to listen to ourselves. We are
constantly carrying on a dialogue within ourselves that
when tapped into tells us who we really are. What we
talk about, the behaviors we give ourselves permission
to engage in, the priorities we set for ourselves and
others all reflect our true values and beliefs. It is from
this interior dialogue that our actions arise. If we choose
not to listen or evaluate what we hear ourselves saying
to ourselves we run the risk of becoming someone we
really don’t want to become. Self-knowledge
presupposes our readiness to change. We take an interest
in who we really are because ultimately we seek to
become images of Jesus Christ.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 2, 2018
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Our Lady of Lourdes
In the year 1858, Mary appeared eighteen
times near Lourdes, France, to a fourteen-year-old
Bernadette Soubirous. Bernadette was out gathering
firewood for her family when she first beheld a
woman in the hollow of rock, “lovelier than I have
ever seen.” Not until the sixteenth apparition, March
25, did the woman reveal her identity: “I am the
Immaculate Conception.”
At the ninth apparition, on February 25, the
Blessed Mother told Bernadette to wash her face in the
spring in the grotto and drink of the water there.
Bernadette saw no spring, but obediently smeared her
face with the damp earth beneath the rock. The crowd
thought her mad, but Bernadette related what the lady
had told her: “It is for sinners.” By the afternoon, a
spring was gushing forth. The citizens of Lourdes
began to imitate Bernadette’s gesture. On the morning
of March 1, a pregnant Catherine Latapie came to the
spring with two little children in tow. She bathed her
paralyzed hand in the waters and was healed, the first
known cure at Lourdes.
Since then, over 7000 cures have been
documented. The Church has exhaustively
investigated and confirmed sixty-nine, the most recent
being in 1989 healing of Danila Castelli, who had
suffered from dangerous high blood pressure until she
bathed in the waters of Lourdes. The Feast of Our
Lady of Lourdes is observed yearly on February 11

RCIA: AN EXPLANATION (PART 3)
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a four stage
process. Stage 3 is the time of final preparation before
receiving the Sacraments at Easter. The catechumen
becomes known as the elect. This stage always
coincides with Lent — a time to grow closer to the Lord
through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. If you know
someone who is interested in the Catholic faith,
encourage them to contact the rectory to learn more.
Email Fr. Peter at [email protected].
Church Etiquette with
Monsignor Manners
Monsignor Manners says:
Everyone has to cough from time to
time. But during Mass, a Catholic
always tries to reduce its volume so
that the sound does not disrupt the Mass.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTION
FOR SEPTEMBER
Young People in Africa: That young people in
Africa may have access in their own countries to
education and work.
Reflection by Fr. Peter Schineller, SJ
The fastest growth in the 2000-year history of
Christianity is happening now and it is happening in
Africa. In the year 1900 there were 9 million
Christians out of 1.2 billion person in Africa. Now
there are 500 million Christians out of 1.2 billion
person in Africa. What about young people in Africa?
Twenty percent of the world’s youth (those aged 15-
21) are in Africa. It is the youngest continent in the
world. The median age in Africa is 19.4 years.
Indeed, there are many reason why the Pope asked us
to pray for the youth in Africa.
Growing up in Africa is not easy. Youth face
problems and struggles that include bad leadership,
corrupt government, stagnant economies, and poor or
non-existent educational facilities. Despite some
advances in education and economic growth, progress
remains fragile, inequalities are widespread and
young Africans face major difficulties in finding
decent jobs and participating in decision-making.
Yet, there is hope. The youth of Africa are
resilient, hopeful, and eager to learn. They have much
to offer the world; joy, hope, a sense of God, dance
and song. Vocations to the priesthood and religious
life are abundant. The youth of Africa need our
prayers and support. We follow the lead of Pope
Francis as he addressed the youth of Africa in
Uganda.
“Do not be afraid to let the light of your faith
shine in your families, your schools and your places
of work. Do not be afraid to enter into dialogue
humbly with others who may see things differently.
We pray that your appeals and your pleas for greater
opportunity can be heard; that all can enjoy the peace
and security which they rightfully deserve on the
basis of their infinite human dignity.”

ROSARY COAST TO COAST
In celebration of the feast of Our Lady of the
Rosary, St. Anthony of Padua will be joining
"Rosary Coast to Coast" in a nationwide hour
of the Rosary to be held on Sunday, October 7 at 4 pm.
The Rosary will be prayed for world peace at the same
time at churches around the country. To celebrate this
powerful experience, our parish will present a human
rosary in the church with people representing the beads.
All parishioners are encouraged to attend and gather for
refreshments afterward in the hospitality room. This event
is sponsored by the Women's Faith Ministry.
ADULT FAITH CLASSES
“The aim of all Christian education, moreover, is to train
the believer in an adult faith that can make him a ‘new
creation,’ capable of bearing witness in his surroundings to
the Christian hope that inspires him.”
—Pope Benedict XVI, from Sacramentum Caritatis:
On the Eucharist as the Source and Summit of the
Church's Life and Mission
All classes take place in the Hospitality Room. Each class
will be one hour, with no prior classes necessary.
All are welcome.
2018 FIRST STEP PROGRAM
Attempting to pick up the pieces of one’s life after the
tragedy of divorce is an area that can impact a person’s
relationship with God and the Church. The Tribunal of
the Diocese of Cleveland offers its First Step Program to
help individuals to renew and/or strengthen their
relationship with God and the Church. This program is
offered to help everyone, especially those who have
experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching
regarding marriage, divorce, and remarriage.
Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office
of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will
also be present to explain the resources they offer to the
divorced.
Everyone is welcome to:
♦ Deepen knowledge of the Church’s teaching on
marriage...
♦ Learn about the Church’s ministry to the divorced/
separated in the Diocese...
♦ Hear about the annulment process and how to submit
a case...
♦ Discover a path to healing after divorce in order to
strengthen and/or renew a relationship with God and
the Church
In any endeavor, taking the “first step” is always the
most difficult. The First Step Program helps individuals
to navigate the path of healing and closure.
The First Step Program will be held on:
Tuesday, 18 September 2018, at St. Ambrose Parish,
Brunswick, at 7:00 pm
**Note that the Diocese of Cleveland no longer
requires any fees for this process**

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
Stop by the Lighthouse Media display in the hallway off
of the Church gathering area and check out our CD
selection. The CDs are great to listen to while driving in
your car. This is a great way to grow spirituality and gain
new insights into our Catholic Faith. In addition, we also
have some books and pamphlets that you will find
interesting.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

A sad movie? How do you usually respond? Sharing
one’s deepest feelings builds intimacy.” — Daily
