Wednesday Morning Bible Study Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John The Wednesday Morning English Bible Study Group will begin Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John (a Great Adventure Catholic Bible Study) on Wednesday September 7. The study is eight weeks and will end November 16. We will be meeting right after the Wednesday morning Mass in the Community Life Center from 9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.. No prior experience with Bible study is necessary – only a desire to spend some time each day with scripture. Please pre-register with Carmen Delgado so that enough material can be or-dered. Contact Carmen by phone at 281-550-5003, or at [email protected] ,or you can leave a message at the front desk in the parish office. There is a $20 fee for the book, and scholarships are available. You will not only benefit personally from being part of this study; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we grow closer to Christ together.

Pilgrimage with Fr. Lockey We begin with the Feast of Pentecost and the 50th Anniversary of the Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church.

The pilgrimage is open to those seeking a time of prayer and fellowship in celebration with the saints and Holy Father and in communion with other pil-grims in strengthening our commitment to strive for holiness and deeper union with God. We will have a special visit to Rome and will celebrate Pentecost Sun-day Mass with our Holy Fa-ther, Pope Francis, followed by an audience with Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square.

Afterward we travel to Assisi, Siena, Pienza, Florence, Padua, and Venice, seeing plac-es associated with saints and great events that allow us to do homage to God. Come, grow in God with us as we journey through the land and times of the saints. Flyers are in the office.

F rom the Great Fathers Excerpt of a sermon of Pope St. Leo the Great The Lord then goes on to say: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for right-eousness, for they shall be filled. This hunger is not for bodily food, this thirst is not for any earthly drink: it is a longing to be blessed with righteousness, and, by penetrating the secret of all mysteries, to be filled with the Lord himself. Happy is the soul that longs for the food of righteousness and thirsts for this kind of drink; it would not seek such things if it had not already savoured their delight. When the soul hears the voice of the Spirit saying to it through the prophet: Taste and see that the Lord is good, it has already received a portion of God’s good-ness, and is on fire with love, the love that gives joy of the utmost purity. It counts as nothing all that belongs to time; it is entirely consumed with desire to eat and drink the food of righteousness. The soul lays hold of the true meaning of the first and great commandment: You shall love the Lord God with your whole heart, and your whole mind and your whole strength, for to love God is nothing else than to love righteousness. Finally, just as concern for one’s neighbor is added to love of God, so the virtue of mercy is added to the desire for righteousness, as it is said: Blessed are the merciful, for God will be merciful to them.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: In the Gospel for this Sunday (Luke 14:25-33), Jesus identifies three conditions of discipleship. They are 1) Put the love of God above every human love; 2) Ac-cept sacrifice and self-denial, and 3) Be detached from material riches and love poverty instead. At first glace, these stipulations may seem crazy. At the very least, they are counter-cultural, as they were for the disciples who first heard them. But they are part of God’s saving Word to us. Perhaps we can understand Christ’s words better if we consider what is contrary to the path he puts before us. Putting love of self above love of God leads to narcissism. Turning away from self-denial leads to indulgence. Focusing on ma-terial gain leads to greed. Surrendering to these vices leads to slavery to sin and to self. Even though the narcissist, the indulgent, and the materialist think they are free because they are doing what they want, they have instead chained themselves to burdens that can lead to their moral and spiritual destruction. By inviting to follow His way instead, Jesus is promising His disciples true freedom. In 1937, the Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote the book, “The Cost of Discipleship,” against the background of the Nazi regime. Bonhoeffer makes a distinction between what he calls “cheap” and ‘Costly” grace: “Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, Baptism without church discipline. Communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ. “Costly grace confronts us as a gracious call to follow Jesus, it comes as a word of forgiveness to the broken spirit and the contrite heart. It is costly because it compels a man to submit to the yoke of Christ and follow him; it is grace be-cause Jesus says: ‘My yoke is easy and my burden is light.’” Jesus invites us to follow Him without counting the cost. How can we not accept this invitation knowing that He has already paid the price for us? Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time: September 4, 2016 7

Continued from page 2… Remember, Christian, the surpassing worth of the wisdom that is yours. Bear in mind the kind of school in which you are to learn your skills, the rewards to which you are called. Mercy itself wishes you to be merciful, righteousness itself wishes you to be righteous, so that the Creator may shine forth in his creature, and the image of God be reflected in the mirror of the human heart as it imitates his qualities. The faith of those who live their faith is a serene faith. What you long for will be given you; what you love will be yours for ever. Since it is by giving alms that everything is pure for you, you will also receive that blessing which is promised next by the Lord: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Dear friends, great is the happiness of those for whom such a reward is prepared. Who are the clean of heart if not those who strive for those virtues we have mentioned above? What mind can conceive, what words can express the great happiness of seeing God? Yet human nature will achieve this when it has been transformed so that it sees the Godhead no longer in a mirror or obscurely but face to face – the Godhead that no man has been able to see. In the inexpressible joy of this eternal vision, human nature will possess what eye has not seen or ear heard, what man’s heart has never conceived.

Sept . 8 : Feast of the Nat iv i ty of the B lessed V i rg in Mary The present Feast forms a link between the New and the Old Testament. It shows that Truth succeeds symbols and figures and that the New Covenant re-places the Old. Hence, all creation sings with joy, exults, and participates in the joy of this day.... This is, in fact, the day on which the Creator of the world con-structed His temple; today is the day on which by a stupendous project a crea-ture becomes the preferred dwelling of the Creator" (Saint Andrew of Crete). "Let us celebrate with joy the birth of the Virgin Mary, of whom was born the Sun of Justice.... Her birth constitutes the hope and the light of salvation for the whole world.... Her image is light for the whole Christian people" (From the Litur-gy). As these texts so clearly indicate, an atmosphere of joy and light pervades the Birth of the Virgin Mary. 1. Historical Details about the Feast The origin of this Feast is sought in Palestine. It goes back to the consecration of a church in Jerusalem, which tradition identifies as that of the present basilica of St. Ann. At Rome the Feast began to be kept toward the end of the 7th century, brought there by Eastern monks. Gradually and in varied ways it spread to the other parts of the West in the centuries that followed. From the 13th century on, the celebration assumed notable importance, becoming a Solemnity with a major Octave and preceded by a Vigil calling for a fast. The Octave was re-duced to a simple one during the reform of St. Pius X and was abolished alto-gether under the reform of Pius XII in 1955. The present Calendar characterizes the Birth of Mary as a "Feast," placing it on the same plane as the Visitation. For some centuries now, the Birth has been assigned to September 8 both in the East and in the West, but in ancient times it was celebrated on different dates from place to place. However, when the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (which has a later origin than that of the Birth) was extended to the whole Church, the Birth little by little became assigned everywhere to September 8: nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. 2. At the Heart of Salvation As we know, the Gospels have not transmitted to us anything about the birth of the Virgin Mary. Their attention is completely centered on the mystery of Christ and His salvific mission. The birth of Mary is recounted by the Protevangelium of James (5:2), an apocry-phal writing from the end of the 2nd century. Subsequent tradition is based on this account. The description - although in the manner of an apocryphal document - obvious-ly presents an important historical event: the birth of the Mother of the Lord. But the problem that concerns us here is the significance of this event. In the case of all the Saints, the Church commemorates their birthday on the day of their return to the Lord. However, in the cases of St. John the Baptizer and the Blessed Virgin, it also celebrates the day of their earthly birth. This is a singular

fact already emphasized in ancient times, for example, by Paschasius Radbertus (d. about 859). The reason for this fact is not found primarily in the greatness or the privi-leges of the persons involved but in the singular mission that was theirs in the History of Salvation. In this light, the birth of the Blessed Virgin is considered to be - like that of John the Baptizer - in direct relationship with the coming of the Savior of the world. Thus, the birth and existence of Mary similar to and even more than those of the Bap-tizer - take on a significance that transcends her own person. It is ex-plained solely in the context of the History of Salvation, connected with

the People of God of the Old Cove-nant and the New. Mary's birth lies at the confluence of the two Testa-ments - bringing to an end the stage of expectation and the promises and inaugurating the new times of grace and salvation in Jesus Christ. Mary, the Daughter of Zion and ideal personification of Israel, is the last and most worthy representative of the People of the Old Covenant but at the same time she is "the hope and the dawn of the whole world." With her, the elevated Daughter of Zion, after a long expectation of the promises, the times are fulfilled and a new economy is established (LG 55). The birth of Mary is ordained in partic-

ular toward her mission as Mother of the Savior. Her existence is indissolubly connected with that of Christ: it par-takes of a unique plan of predestina-tion and grace. God's mysterious plan regarding the incarnation of the Word embraces also the Virgin who is His Mother. In this way, the Birth of Mary is inserted at the very heart of the History of Salvation. 3. Christological Orientations The Biblical readings of the Feast have a clear Christological- salvific orienta-tion that forms the backdrop for con-templating the figure of Mary. Micah 5:1-4a. The Prophet announces the coming of the Lord of Israel who will come forth from Bethlehem of Ju-dah. The Mother of the Messiah, pre-sented as one about to give birth, will give life to the prince and pastor of the house of David who will bring justice and peace. She will work with the Mes-siah to bring forth a new people. Romans 8.28-30. This passage does not speak directly about Mary but about the believer justified by the grace of Christ and gifted with the indwelling of the Spirit. He or she has been chosen and called from all eternity to share Christ's life and glory. This is true in a privileged manner for Mary, Spouse and Temple of the Holy Spirit, Mother of God's Son, and intimately united with Him in a Divine plan of predestina-tion and grace. Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23. The meaning of this seemingly and genealogy is theo-logically profound: to place Jesus, the MessiahLord, within the dynastic tree of His people. He is a descendant, and in fact "the descendant," of Abraham (cf. Gal 3:16) and the Patriarchs in ac-cord with the promises, and He is the semi-heir of the Prophets. The ring that united Christ with His people is Mary, Daughter of Zion and Mother of the Lord. The virginity stressed by the Gospel text is the sign of the Divine origin of the

Live My Faith Program Do you have a son or daughter entering the 4th through 6th grades? Would you like to see them deepen their understand-ing of our Catholic faith? I will be leading a class for the I Live My Faith Program for youth en-tering 4th through 6th grades starting in August 2016. We will

meet one Saturday per month for about 3 hours for 5 total sessions and participate in a service project to be planned by the youth. In this program we will learn about our beliefs by breaking down the Nicene Creed, delve deeper into the sacraments, learn about Catholic Christian Living (service) and learn about the many forms of prayer. The fee will be just the cost of the work-book and an additional fee if you want your child to receive the medal for the program at a special cere-mony in the spring. If you would like more information regarding the program please contact Teri Schweiss and leave a message at 713-816-1691 or [email protected].

2016 – 2017 SEAS Bowling League We still need a few adult men and women to complete our teams. We also need substitutes. Beginners and accomplished bowlers are welcome. Please contact Sandy Janda by email: [email protected] or by calling 281-463-1819.

Chi ld ren’s Choi r St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish is forming a new children’s choir to sing with adults for the 10:30 a.m. Mass begin-

ning in September. All area children in fourth grades and older are eligible. A voice trial is required. To schedule

this, and for more information, please contact Dr. Doug-las O’Neill at his e-mail: [email protected].

Continued from page 11... Son and of the absolute newness that now breaks forth in the history of human beings. The Christological-salvific purpose and tone dominate not only the Bible readings but also the Eucharistic Celebration and the Liturgy of the Hours. It has been observed that, although the texts of this Feast's celebration are less rich than those of other Marian feasts, they do have one outstanding characteristic: "The number of themes is rather restricted, [but] there are extremely nu-merous invitations to joy" (J. Pascher). Indeed, joy pervades the whole of this Feast's liturgy. If many "will rejoice" at the birth of the precursor (cf. Lk 1:14), a much greater joy is stirred up by the birth of the Mother of the Savior. Hence, this is a Feast that serves as a prelude to the "joy to all people" brought about by the Birth of the Son of God at Christmas and expressed by the singing of hymns and carols. Added to this theme of joy on this Marian Feast is that of light because with Mary's birth the darkness is dispersed and there rises in the world the dawn that announces the Sun of Justice, Christ the Lord. Taken from: Dictionary of Mary (NY: Catholic Book, 1985).

During our August food drive we collected 769 pounds of non-perishable food items. Your generosity on Vin-centian Sundays (3rd Sunday each month) through food donations and envelope contributions are the lifeblood of this ministry. Please remember that in between our monthly food drives, food donations can also be placed in the drop box in the Narthex, which we regularly check and deliv-er the contents thereof to the food pantry for distribu-tion. Together let us continue to keep the poor in prayer and give thanks to God for the work of this ministry.

St . Peter C laver Feast Day: September 9 St. Peter Claver was born at Verdu, Catalonia, Spain, in 1580 of a poor family. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Tarragona in 1602 and took his final vows on August 8th, 1604. The young religious was influenced by St. Alphonsus Rodriguez to go to the Indies and save "millions of perishing souls."

In 1610, he landed at Cartagena (modern Colombia), the principle slave market of the New World, where a thousand slaves were landed every month. After his ordination in 1616, he dedicated himself by special vow to the service of the slaves-a work that was to last for thirty-three years. He labored unceasingly for the salvation of the African slaves and the abolition of the slave trade, and the love he lavished on them was something that transcended the natural order.

Boarding the slave ships as they entered the harbor, he would hurry to the revolting inferno of the hold, and offer whatever poor refreshments he could afford; he would care for the sick and dying, and instruct the slaves through catechists before administering the Sacra-ments. Through his efforts three hundred thousand souls entered the Church. Furthermore, he did not lose sight of his converts when they left the ships, but followed them to the plan-tations to which they were sent, encouraged them to live as Christians, and prevailed on their masters to treat them humanely. He died in 1654.
