SUNDAY THOUGHT
Matthew 2:1-12
Today is the Feast of the Epiphany. The wise men’s
journey in today’s gospel is symbolic of our own journey
of faith. As we move through life we are constantly
seeking signs of God’s presence. This desire for God is
built into us by God Himself. At times we experience this
need for God as a deep unfulfilled longing or
dissatisfaction with what we have and who we are. Often
when we feel this longing we panic and start rushing
around to find ways to shut-off these feelings. We turn to
our spouses or close friends hoping that they will take
away this ache we feel deep within us. Or we may try
soothing our pain with food, drink, or buying things we
don’t really need or actually want. But we know from
experience that the pain is only taken away for awhile. It
will always come back. These things simply don’t work
because only God can fill up the deep dissatisfaction we
all find within us. But to find God will entail entering
upon a journey that takes us within ourselves. Prayer is
the path we will have to follow. It is the meeting ground
upon which we encounter the God who longs to make
Himself known to us. The start of a new year is always a
good time to renew our resolution to spend more time in
prayer. Don’t wait. Do it now.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 8, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Joseph Oriol, Priest (1650-1702)
Born of a family of poor silk weavers in
Barcelona, Spain, Joseph was initially educated by his
parish priest who taught him to love Christ in the
Eucharist. Joseph completed his education at the
University of Barcelona, receiving a doctorate in
theological studies. After his ordination in 1676, in
order to provide for his widowed mother, Joseph
worked as a tutor in a wealthy family. One night while
he was at table with the family, he was about to serve
himself from a plate of rich food, when he found
himself unable to move his hand. After the third try at
serving himself failed, Joseph accepted this as a sign
from God asking him to begin to live a life of penance.
From that time on, he fasted on bread, water, and
herbs, taking a sardine or two only on the most solemn
feasts.
After the death of his mother, Joseph took
leave of his family and journeyed to Rome where he
was granted a benefice in the church of Nuestra
Senore del Pino, back in Barcelona. His priestly life
was remarkable for a spirit of penance, profound
humility, and prudence in directing souls. He rented a
bare room where he could pray and do penance. He
slept on the floor and wore the same clothes every day.
At first only the children would run to him, seeing past
the ragged appearance. In time, though, Joseph’s
humble ways won over many shattered souls and
hardened sinners.
Impelled by a desire of martyrdom, Joseph
attempted again to go to Rome in April 1698, to offer
himself for the foreign missions, but, falling sick at
Marseilles, he returned to Barcelona. God bestowed
upon him prophetic and miraculous powers. The
dying, the blind, the deaf and dumb, the lame, and the
paralytic, were instantly cured by him.
Saint Joseph Oriol died on March 23, 1702 at
the age of 51. He was beatified by Pius VIII,
September 5, 1806 and canonized by Pius X, May 20,
1909. His feast day occurs on March 23

PARISH CALENDARS
A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr.
John Riczo from the Riczo Funeral
Home and also a St. Anthony parishioner for once
again providing our parish with calendars for 2017. His
continued generosity to the parish is deeply
appreciated. As we begin a New Year, it’s a good time
to say thank you to all our kind and loyal bulletin
sponsors. Our patronage is one good way to show our
appreciation.
THANK YOU FROM THE GIVING
TREE PROGRAM
This year we were able to provide 43
parish and local area families with
Christmas gifts. Many of these families suffered
tragedies this year such as loss of job, serious medical
illnesses, house fire, and house theft. Each family we
helped wanted to pass on a thank you to our
parishioners and wanted to let you know that they were
truly overwhelmed by your generosity.
FOOD PANTRY
If one of your New Year's resolutions was to donate
food to our food ministry, please check the list in the
hallway outside the hospitality room for
suggestions. Thank you for thinking of
our food ministry and for your
generosity toward our program.

On my own behalf and on behalf of Fr. Peter, we
would like to express our most sincere thank you to
the many wonderful people of St. Anthony’s who
sent cards, gifts, and pastries to us over the
Christmas Holiday. We have tried to thank as many
of you as we could personally by card or note, but if
we missed you, please accept our thanks now and
our promise of prayers in the coming year.

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH PARMA, OHIO JANUARY 8, 2017
In continuing this season of service, the Women’s
Faith Ministry invites all women to participate in a
fireside chat and re-gifting event on Wednesday,
January 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality
Room. We will have an open discussion regarding the
importance of community service, how this impacts
us as servants of Christ, and how it is interpreted
through the Women’s Faith Ministry. Refreshments
will be served.
Please bring one or more items that you may have
received as a gift but cannot use or just wish to
donate. Items should be new, practical and can
include things like socks, gloves, scarves, toiletries,
other personal items and non-perishable food, to
name a few. Your gifts will be donated to a local
charitable group in need of these items.
If you wish to participate, please either call the parish
office at (440) 842-2666 or send an email to
Thank you, Lord, for having answered our prayers! In
love and gratitude, we now dedicate our gifts to your
service.
SOCIAL CONCERNS
COMMISSION
The St. Anthony Social Concerns
volunteers will be serving lunch at
the West Side Catholic Center on
Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Your homemade desserts
are truly appreciated by the people who eat at the
center. Some of the men and women from the center
ask us to package their desserts to take home so we
are asking for brownies (preferably without icing),
cookies, bar cookies, or breads that can be sliced
(banana, pumpkin, etc.). You can drop off your
bakery at the rectory on Monday, January 16, 2017.
If you would like to help us in our mission to serve
the needy and you really don’t like to bake, please
consider a cash donation to help defray the cost of our
meals. Any donations are welcome. Thank you.

SOCIAL CONCERNS GROUP OF ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA
The Social Concerns Committee will be sponsoring a “Diaper & Wipe” shower for the
MetroHealth friends of Mothers & Infants.
The collection will take place the weekends of January 21/22 and January 28/29, 2017.
All size diapers are needed, from Preemie to Size 6, along with Baby Diaper Wipes.
Won’t you please help?
The MetroHealth Friends of Mothers & Infants promotes the health and well being of families by providing
essential items for infants & children who are clients of the MetroHealth Center for Community Health, and
have been identified through social workers as living at or below poverty level.
FACTS:
• Infants need up to 12 diapers per day; Toddlers about 8 diapers per day.
• An adequate supply of disposable diapers can cost over $100.00 per month.
• In low-income households, babies often spend the entire day in a single diaper, because the family cannot
afford and adequate supply of diapers.
• Childcare centers require parents to provide disposable diapers for their child.
