Pastor Dear Friends: A very Happy Easter to you!

Among other things, Easter is about newness. And so, here is our bulletin with a new fresh look and feel to it! It has undergone some transformation and redesign. The bulletin is our primary means of communicating information to our members on a weekly basis. We searched for a bulletin publisher who could offer their printing services at no cost to the parish. Liturgical Publications Inc. (LPi) will be publishing our weekly bulletin. This will save us a lot of time and money and give us a bulletin with a new vibrant look with expanded format and full color. Catholic family-owned since 1972, LPi finds local businesses to support the publication financially, allowing the church to deliver their message in a cost-effective manner. Please utilize these wonderful advertisers whenever possible, and use the bulletin as a resource whenever you are in need of products or services. Let them know we truly appreciate their loyal support of our weekly bulletin. It is their generosity that will provide the weekly bulletin at no cost to our parishes. Consider purchasing an ad for your business or to support a

charity close to your heart. Your participation makes our bulletin successful and you attract customers.

Perhaps it’s good that occasionally we have to celebrate Easter without the images of spring to draw on. There’s a danger that we could easily confuse the spring symbols of Easter for the reality of Easter, in which case we could easily miss the reality of Easter. Easter is not spring. Easter is not the welcome warm weather that comes at the end of winter. Easter is not new buds on trees, or tulips or daffodils pok-ing their way out of the ground. Easter is not melting snows, or green grass, or new hats or suits or dresses, or Easter eggs or bunnies. It’s not even the flowers and spring colors that decorate our church today. Easter is the resurrection: the Lord’s resurrection; the disciples’ res-urrection; our own resurrection - the refusal to accept that anyone should be left for dead. Easter sings that the resurrection is not just an event after death, but a reality of everyday life. Unity, love, and wholeness are qualities of the resurrected life. Easter calls us to break through boundaries of nationality, race, age, mental capacity and gender. We are to create a unity of love that allows the life of Jesus to be lived in everyone. We are to let go of old ways of feeling good about ourselves, and to reach out to a new integration of our many faceted humanities. Like those who came to the empty tomb that first Easter, we may be frightened and confused. The power of the Lord’s resur-

rection is a rich grace that allows us to live our lives with vision that can transform us as we are living it!

And the symbols of that resurrection, which are the same for all people, no matter where they live - north, east, south, or west - are fire, light, and water: Fire, burning in our own heart as it did in the hearts of the disciples when they discovered the empty tomb and learned that Jesus had risen as he said he would. Light, brilliant light, dispelling darkness for us as it did for the disciples with the realization that God’s power is truly greater than the world’s sin. Water, cool, refreshing water, giving life to us as it did to the disciples when the only thing the world can promise in the end is death. These are the real symbols of Easter and resurrection used by the Church from the very earliest day of Christianity to symbolize the new life given us in the death and resurrection of Jesus. “New life” may strike some people as a nice pious phrase, but those who have experienced that new life know it is as real and tangible as the “old life” it replaced. And we all know how real and tangible the “old life” can be. In the Sacred Triduum we have celebrated the events that challenge our faith at its deepest levels. Without these events there would be no Christian faith. Unless we remember these events and seek to live them in our own lives, the Church has no message of any worth to proclaim to our world. The entire substance of the Church’s faith is contained in the celebration of the Triduum. Needless to say, I hope our celebration of Easter will go deeper than the symbols we associate with spring and the end of win-ter. May the fire of our faith be more than just a hot flash that goes as quickly as it comes. May the light of Christ truly dispel the darkness and doubts created by a confused world that cannot see beyond the present moment. May the water of baptism flow once again across our heads to give us renewed life in Christ. May we once again embrace with Jesus the cross of salvation and announce again to all the world, “Jesus Christ Is Risen! Alleluia!” We will never fully understand the resurrection; all we can do is believe and stand in amazement. With faith in the new life of the resurrection, we can find a hope strong enough to overcome all our fears and worries. And we can love with a love

that encompasses everyone, as Jesus did, knowing that love is life-giving. This is truly a day to celebrate!!

Something to think about: “No faith could be more tragic, no belief more futile than Christianity without its risen Lord. It would be sad and foolish to base our lives on

a dead hero.” [Trevor Hudson]

Have a very blessed Easter!

Beautification Project: St. Patrick has spent a significant amount of Bud Skalla’s donation on much needed infrastructure and long-term planning items. It’s time to turn our attention to sprucing up the outside, showcasing the natural beauty endowed by God and recognizing Mr. Skalla for his most generous contribution. To that end, the parish council would like to form a committee of parish volunteers to plan/organize this beautification project which will include the area in front of the church, the area that was formerly the school, as well as a memorial for Bud Skalla to be incorporated somewhere on the premises. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please contact Chair-person Pat Kocour at 402-290-7093 or Michele in the parish office 712-642-2611.
