President’s Report

Dear Neighbours, It was great to see new and familiar faces join us at our Holiday Celebration. These gatherings are a great opportunity to strengthen bonds between residents and exchange ideas. We will be hosting our next event in March. Gwen and friends did a great job with the Halloween Party. The community centre was full from beginning to end. Given our weather, it was super to have a place to warm up that night. The City is looking at Crowchild Trail and ways to mitigate traffic congestion and access. A web search of “Crowchild Trail Corridor Study” advises us about the general plan and opportunities for input. A few reminders about safety and security. Clearing snow and ice from your sidewalk is in everyone’s interest. Being a Snow Angel is always appreciated. We’ve had a few items stolen from backyards and motor vehicles in recent months. Keep temptation and and opportunity at a minimum by keeping valuable items out of view or locked up. Once again, thanks to all of our volunteers. Best wishes for the holiday season. Halloween Party at St. Andrews Heights Community Centre Gwen Schaefer

We had a very successful Fourth Annual Halloween Party! Thank you to all who braved the cold wind to mingle with other trick or treaters and enjoy a few goodies. Thank you to Michael and Crista Freiter for sponsoring our Hallow-een Party! Simone helped me greet our guests and apply the tat-toos, and along with Michael, Crista, Stratton and Veronique helped decorate and clean up. Thank you so much! And thanks to Jeff for the techy stuff! See you next Halloween!

Ice Matters Nik Rasula

Results from the two tryout sessions were great. With every evaluation spot booked, re-sults were impressive. As tabulation towards final cuts continues, announcement of the final ice-crew roster will be made in the next newsletter. Well done by those that tried out for this year’s ice-crew. Should be a great skating season if the weather ever chooses to cooperate.

Sympathy from the Community

The Community Association would like offer sympathy to long-time community member and volunteer Al Rasmuson on the passing of his mother.

Gladys Irene Gutwin (1918-2012) was born near Gwynne, Alberta and lived a good and giving life. With her keen mind, Gladys was able to enjoy playing cards, socializing and making handi-crafts throughout her retirement years. She is survived by three sons, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Cold Weather Tips for Cats and Dogs Animal & Bylaw Services

• Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, cats can freeze or ingest antifreeze or other harmful chemi-cals.

• Never leave your cat or dog alone in a car during cold weather. If the car engine is left on, the carbon monoxide will endanger his life. If the engine is off, the temperature in the car will get too cold.

• Thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when he comes in from outside. • Check your dog’s sensitive paw pads, which may bleed from snow or ice encrusted in them.

Also, salt, antifreeze or other chemicals could hurt your dog if he ingests them while licking his paws. Clip the fur between the toe pads to reduce the amount of snow that collects.

• Groom your dog regularly. A well-groomed coat will keep him properly insulated. For short-haired breeds, dogs sensitive to cold weather (older or sick dogs, puppies, etc.) con-sider getting a warm coat or sweater and booties. Get a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck that covers your dog from the base of his tail on top to the belly underneath. Re-member that dogs lose most of their body heat from the pads of their feet, ears, and respira-tory tract.

• If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only long enough to relieve himself.

• Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be difficult to house train dur-ing the winter. If necessary, paper train your puppy inside if he seems to be sensitive to cold weather.

• Feed your dog additional calories if he spends a lot of time outdoors. It takes more energy in winter to keep his body temperature regulated.

• Make sure your cat or dog has a warm place to sleep far away from all drafts and off the floor, such as in a bed or basket with a warm blanket or pillow in it.

Introducing Tracy Bertsch, New Director of Animal & Bylaw Services

I am very excited to join the talented team of Animal & Bylaw Services. No one loved the work of Animal & Bylaw Services more than former Director Bill Bruce who retired in August of this year. It is an honour for me to continue building on the strong founda-tion laid by Bill and the talented employees in Animal and Bylaw Services. My primary focus in this role is to deliver quality services that citizens value. With six years in operational and senior leadership roles at the City of Calgary and 20 plus years in the private sector, I look forward to working together with you to encourage safe, healthy and vibrant communities for people and their pets. Animal & Bylaw Services provides a vast array of services from educating Calgarians about responsible pet ownership, to ensuring awareness and adherence to the commu-nity bylaws. For more information on how Animal & Bylaw Services assists citizens and communities visit calgary.ca.

Development & Building Approvals has created the Practical Guide for Construc-tion Sites in Calgary. It is a guide for those engaged in or impacted by construction activities in Calgary. The intent of this Guide is to encourage and to help enable exemplary construction and demolition site management practices that comply with all related legislation, regulations, standards and City bylaws. Adherence to the principles of the Guide will help ensure that con-struction projects get completed without impacting the safety and wellbeing of the public and protection of the adjacent properties are maintained. Those having complete care and control of the activities on con-struction sites have the responsibility to manage the sites and ad-dress resident and community concerns directly. However, if an owner or contractor is unable or unwilling to address site issues, residents of the community are requested to contact 3-1-1 so that the City may respond accordingly.

The guide can be found by searching calgary.ca for: Practical Guide for Construction Sites.

A Message from your Alderman Druh Farrell Ward 7

The City of Calgary has been conducting the annual Citizen Satisfaction Survey for the past 15 years to understand and respond to Calgarians’ changing needs and expectations. In October we received the results from the 2012 survey conducted by Ipsos Reid and 95% of Calgarians gave The City a positive rating for overall performance—the highest ever. Calgarians told us that there is a significant improvement in quality of life and community pride. 95% say that blue cart recycling was a primary strength. More Calgarians said that parks, path-ways and recreation were vital but were also frustrated with lack of access to recreation facili-ties. Attitudes regarding City service delivery and transparency continued to show positive momen-tum this year. Over 80% of Calgarians rated The City’s quality of service as consistently high, were satisfied with City Programs and Services, and thought that we foster a city that is inclusive and accept-ing of all people. 81% of Calgarians say they are satisfied with City Programs and Services, up 6% from last year. 84% of Calgarians believe that The City practices open and accessible government, up 4% from 2011 and 15% from 2010. Areas of concerns were with traffic congestion, particularly in Calgary’s southeast, and frustra-tion with growth and planning. As a response, Council has approved a Transforming Planning task force to review and reform many aspects of the planning process. Transportation improve-ments will be more challenging. We are responding to a severe reduction of Provincial infra-structure grants by putting an increased focus on transportation optimization and system effi-ciencies. To celebrate, The City of Calgary is having a HeartYYC contest and invites Calgarians to post why they love living in Calgary on the City’s Facebook page. The full survey results are avail-able on calgary.ca.
