23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Unity leads to the Presence of God: The
gospel passage for 23rd Sunday forms
part of the community discourses in
Matthew (Mt 18: 1-35). It shows the
interconnections between unity,
forgiveness, and the presence of Jesus in
the Christian community. This promise of
his presence among the people gathered
in his name in V 20 “where two or three
are gathered in my name there am I in the midst” marks a distinguishing realization of
the prophetic promise of the presence of God (Is. 7, 14) mentioned as fulfilled in Mt 1:23.
A gathering of the disciples is not sufficient for having Jesus’ presence. The phrase ‘in my
name’ here stands for the presence and work of Jesus. It signifies commitment of the
disciples to Jesus, and is also the mark of their identity. It conveys the message that Jesus
is the motivating force behind our gatherings in his name. The name of Jesus provides
the uniqueness of these gatherings. To have the presence of Jesus, there needs to be
unity and harmony among those coming together in his name.
This gospel passage indicates that without having unity it is harder to have the presence
of Jesus among his followers. To have unity they need to forgive one another. This
relationship verifies the relationship between the ‘experience of God among us’ in our
families and communities, and forgiving one another. By doing so, as disciples, we share
Jesus’ mission of saving his people from their sins as expressed in Mt 1:21.
The gospel message is that it is the presence of Jesus in our lives, families and
communities that strengthens and encourages us to forgive one another. We need to be
in unity and harmony in order to experience the presence of God among us. Fr Rony

Father’s Day: We honour our Fathers today. We thank God for the gift
of Fathers. We are so grateful for their love and for supporting us – in
all ways, materially, financially, and emotionally. On this special day
let us take the time to thank them and let them know how much we
value them in our lives. To brighten up their day, please tell them
some dad jokes.
Let us also remember those fathers who have gone before us by
offering a prayer for them. May the Lord grant eternal rest unto them.
Happy Father’s Day! - Louie
The Season of Creation. 1 September to 4 October:
The Season of Creation is a month-long prayerful
observance that calls the planets 2.2 billion Christians
to pray and care for God’s creation. It’s time to reflect
on our relationship with the environment - not just
nature - but crucially the place where we live, and the
ways in which our lifestyles and decisions as a society can endanger both the natural world
and those inhabiting it, both human and other creatures.
We have recently lived through devastating bush fire seasons, floods and cyclonic
weathers - no strangers to us but still deeply disturbing and destabilizing and sometimes
quite frightening.
The season of creation should make us pause, reflect and enable us to face some issues
that need airing as well as thanking God for the beauty and wonder all around us, if we
care to look.
The world day of prayer for creation is September 1st, already gone but hopefully not
forgotten. The season concludes on October 4th, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, which
this year is the Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.
It’s a great time to reflect on LAUDATO SI! (PRAISE BE!) On Care of Our Common Home,
the encyclical letter on ecology and climate by Pope Francis written in 2015. The Pope
refers us to the words of the beautiful canticle of St Francis of Assisi which reminds us
that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother
who opens her arms to embrace us. Pope Francis reminds us in paragraph 240,
describing the TRINITY, that the Trinity has left its mark on all creation.
‘The divine Persons are subsistent relations, and the world created according to the
divine model, is a web of relationships. Creatures tend towards God, and in turn it is
proper to every living being to tend towards other things, so that throughout the universe
we can find any number of constant and secretly interwoven relationships….…This leads
us not only to marvel at the manifold connections existing among creatures, but also to
discover a key to our own fulfilment….… Everything is interconnected, and this invites us
to develop a spirituality of that global solidarity which flows from the mystery of the Trinity.
‘God’s infinite beauty can be reflected on and prayed about especially through this
season of creation. Teach us Lord to discover the worth of each being, to be filled with
awe and contemplation as we journey towards your infinite light, especially at this time of
great difficulty for many people. Br Neville
National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and
Neglect (NAPCAN) celebrates 30th year of National Child
Protection Week with the theme: Putting children first, with the
aim of bringing abuse and neglect out of the shadows and
putting child wellbeing on the national agenda.
Putting children first means prioritising the safety and
wellbeing of children. To grow up well children need to feel
safe and loved, have a chance to play and explore, have a
say in decisions that affect them, and access to essential things like food, shelter, and
healthcare. For children to thrive we need to come together as a community and put
children’s needs first during National Child Protection Week and every week.

Knights of the Southern Cross invites all its branches and individual
members throughout Australia to join in the 14th National Prayer
Crusade to pray for Vocations. With this Crusade prayer, together
we can make an increase in the number of Catholics willing to serve
the Church in the priesthood, diaconate and religious life including
Catholic Chaplains in the Australian Military Services.
By praying for an increase in vocations we hope to be able to relieve the situation
throughout Australia thereby enabling additional priests and deacons to be available
for service as Catholic Chaplains in the Australian Military Services. The prayer starts
6th September and ends 28th November 2020
Crusade Prayer: “Heavenly Father, you know the faith, courage
and generosity of your people throughout Australia including the men and women serving at home and overseas with the Australian Military Services. Please provide your people in Australia with sufficient Priests, Deacons and Religious to meet their needs and be with them always as they endeavour to meet the challenges of their daily lives. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen.”
Pastoral Renewal Group: At the heart of a renewed vision of Church is an openness to listen, to read and to respond to the
signs of the times. With this same spirit, on Tuesday 8th September at 7 pm the Parish Pastoral Renewal Group will gather in
the parish office. This group will explore how the pastoral activities of the parish can be more relevant and effective in this
unusual time.
Central Deanery Forum: COVID-19, has taken many of the important meetings from the actual world to the virtual world. This
time it was the Central Deanery Forum meeting on Zoom, on 2nd September from 5 pm to 6pm. It was a follow up for the
Episcopal Council consultation with Central Deanery. The forum was facilitated by Archbishop Mark Coleridge, Bishop Ken
Howell, Monsignor Peter Meneely, Fr Dan Ryan, Mrs Lisa Forbes, Deacon Peter Pellicaan, Deacon Andrew O’Brien and Mrs
Teresa McGrath.
This Archdiocese has 13 deaneries. Jubilee parish belongs to Central Deanery which includes 10 parishes. There were
representatives from each parish. Everyone interviewed as part of the consultation was also invited to the Forum. This Forum
was meant to provide feedback from the consultations for further discussion. Mrs Teresa McGrath welcomed all to the forum
and Deacon Andrew O’Brien led the opening prayer.
The Episcopal Consultation team gave the reports of each parish as the outcome of their interviews. Archbishop Mark Coleridge
shared some thought-provoking insights. He said, “our world and the Church have been impacted and changed by COVID. We
know our world will be a bit different post COVID. But we do not know how different it will be, what form that will take and how
it will affect us. There are different challenges each parish and communities face in common and the questions we raise are
not only in the central deanery but they also across the Archdiocese or far beyond. The key question we need to think is ‘what
is the future of our parish?’
In our deanery, within that limited radius, we have a lot of Churches, Mass centres and Masses provided for smaller
congregations. How do we accommodate this in the future?
Another major question is the viability of the parishes - pastoral, liturgical, and financial. We are a co-responsible Church and
the questions are for all of us. So, we need to deal with these questions together, listen to each other and find solutions for a
better future. What are the options? Status quo is not an option for future.”
The Central Deanery Forum gave a picture of the whole region. There was opportunity for questions. The forum ended with a
blessing from Fr Dan Ryan.
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: The Church has celebrated Mary’s birth since at least the
sixth century. However, scripture does not provide an account of Mary’s birth. Nevertheless,
the 8 September date helped the Church determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate
Conception on 8 December; there is a time gap of nine months between her conception and
her actual birth.
According to pious tradition, Anna and Joachim had struggled to have a child. They prayed to
God to be granted a child. God heard their prayer. They received the promise when the angel
announced to Anna and Joachim the birth of Mary with the prophecy that God had chosen her
to be the mother of God incarnate – his son who would be named Jesus. In thanksgiving the
daughter (Mary) was presented to the temple and nurtured there until she reached
womanhood. She knew very well that God had a plan for her, and so she patiently waited for its fulfillment. The story of Mary’s
nativity stresses the special presence of God in her life from the beginning.
With real devotion let us celebrate with the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God and our mother. – Louie
Annual Catholic Campaign: The Archdiocese of Brisbane will hold its Annual Catholic Campaign on 19th and 20th September.
The 2019 campaign raised $1.25 million which was equally divided to support four vital ministries around South East
Queensland.
The four vital ministries the Archdiocese needs your support are:
Centacare – the Centacare supports the Catholic social services in the Archdiocese.
Mary Mackillop Catholic School Access Fund – provides education bursaries to children who wish to receive a Catholic
education but the costs are beyond their family’s reach because of financial hardship.
Holy Spirit Seminary – helps to educate seminarians who will serve God’s flock.
Priest Foundation – helps to provide some level assistance for our elderly, unwell and retired priests.
The recipients of this campaign rely on your generous support. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Please support the
2020 Annual Catholic Campaign.
May God bless you a hundredfold.

Father’s Day Stall: our students look
forward to visiting our P&F stall to
purchase a gift for their father, step-
father, uncle, grandfather or that
significant male figure in their life. Thank
you to our amazing P&F for the
organisation of this stall. Our
considerable thanks for their additional
efforts to ensure a COVID safe plan in
the operation of this stall from our hall.
Sporting Events: 2020 is a year as we all
know of “out of the box” thinking. This
has meant our usual carnivals and gala
days have not been able to take place or
be in the usual format due to COVID. But
again, our staff are very clever in
thinking of new ways to give students
similar type experiences. We would like
to acknowledge and thank Mrs Christie
Lewis for organising our Athletic Field
Events over last week and these next
few weeks till the end of term. These
events are for our 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-
year old students. But wait, there is
more, fun days are also planned….
Friday 11 September: Prep and Year 1
Athletics Fun Day. At these events, our
Year 6 leaders will play a crucial role in
running these events, in partnership
with our MYs students and staff.
Friday 18 September: Years 2/3 and
MYs Athletics Fun Day.
Our week has certainly been action packed
from our visit from Bluey’s creator, Joe
Brumm to the great Father’s Day stall,
Dinosaurs everywhere, created by our
amazingly talented Preps and their
teachers and finally a wonderful Year 1
Love assembly dedicated to our Dad’s,
Grandads or the important male in our life.
Maybe our students deserve a day off?
It was very exciting to have our P&F
Father’s Day Stall back this week as this
was the first fundraising experience we
have had this term. Thank you to all who
contributed gifts and our amazing Mums
from Year who organised, wrapped and
sold the gifts. What a wonderful effort to
raise $1300, no doubt our dads will love
their well selected presents.
Next Thursday is R U OK? Day In light of the
unusual year we have all shared, the need
to check in with other and ask this simple
question, has never been more essential.
The theme for this year is;
‘There’s more to say after, R U OK?’.
If you have a feeling that someone you
know or care about isn’t quite themselves,
trust that gut instinct and act on it. By
starting a conversation, you could help that
person to open up. Looking out for those
around us at home, work, family or friends,
is so important. Next Thursday September
10 we are asking all staff and students to
wear a splash of yellow to show we care
and remind everyone to check in with those
they know and love. Please take the
opportunity to join us and wear a splash of
yellow and ask that very significant
question; R U OK?
https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask
“Be kind to yourself; Be kind to others.
Have courage and talk about it.
Thank you to Year 2A who presented their
Assembly item on Monday afternoon. The
children were able to remind us of our
2020 theme, “Bee the Change” and
shared a number of ways that we can all
help to care for God’s creation. They
concluded by singing and signing the
song, “What a Wonderful World” by Louis
Armstrong. Well done to the students and
teachers for your wonderful presentation
and for linking stewardship to the Habit of
Perseverance.
Not only were Year 2 reminding us of our
school theme for this year and our roles
in the sustainability of our world, but they
provided a great introduction to the
“World Day of Prayer for the Care of
Creation”, which was recently declared by
Pope Francis and acknowledged on
Tuesday, 1st September.
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
(all bow)
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he
rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God
the Father almighty; from there he will come to
judge the living and the dead. I believe in the
Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
