MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear St. Agnes School Parents, Thank you to our School Board, Parents’ Club, Enrollment Committee, students and teachers who welcomed visitors to our school and served as tour guides on Tuesday evening of this week. Thanks, too, to Kate, Donald and Reese Watson who served refreshments to our guests in the name of the Parents’ Club. Many spoke of the warm welcome they felt. We hosted twenty-nine families throughout the evening. Some were Cathedral families. If you know a Cathedral family, you might reach out to them and invite them to come for a special tour. Thank you notes were written to those who attended, on Tuesday evening, to thank them for coming and offering to be available for further questions. A second Open House will be held on Tuesday, April 17th. This Sunday, February 25th, is registration for new 3 and 4 year old pre-school children, all kindergarteners (including those who are now in our preschool 4 year old program) and all new students in grades 1 through 8. Please come to the school library after any of the Masses this Sunday. We will be registering from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Please bring an official copy of your child’s birth certificate, your child’s baptismal certificate, unless your child was baptized at St. Agnes since records can be checked with the Parish, and a $75 registration fee. Re-registration papers will be sent home to our current parents on Monday, February 26th. These must be returned to the school office by Monday, March 26th in order to assure your child a place in his/her grade level. Please return the family registration form and the tuition preference form with a registration fee of $75 per child as soon as possible. If you are not planning to return to St. Agnes for the next school year, please let us know since class size will be important in determining staff and ordering materials for a new school year. Tuition and fees for the 2018-2019 school year are being worked on and will be communicated as soon as they are ready. Tuition Assistance applications will be available on-line about mid-March. Last year our school awarded tuition assistance to 50 families totaling around $50,000.00. There is a $30 fee paid to FACTS to complete the application for tuition assistance on-line with the FACTS Tuition Management Company. The FACTS company will make recommendations to Fr. Bob and me about family need. Fr. Bob and I alone (with the new principal) will have access to this information. The amount of tuition we are able to grant depends on the number of families requesting this help and the funds available. This fund grows through donations, memorial gifts honoring family members, direct donations to tuition assistance, through our tuition assistance envelopes and a gift that comes to us twice a year from a Foundation in Arizona because the school was remembered in a past parishioner’s will. Please consider remembering a loved one through a donation to this Tuition Assistance Fund. We are so grateful for this support as some of our families who really want a Catholic education do need assistance. Students in grades 3-8 will be bringing home mid-term progress reports tomorrow. Please take some time to discuss this progress report with your child. The remainder of the quarter is very important to third quarter grades, especially for our eighth graders who will want to keep averages up to prepare for Graduation and entrance into High School. Eighth graders must be passing with at least a C- average to receive a diploma. Those who do not pass will be required to attend summer tutoring to fulfill the requirements for Graduation. Yesterday, our third graders and residents from Hickory Glenn gathered together in the third grade classroom to prepare a joint project. The students came to get me to come and see what they had created! They were so proud of their activity and I was proud of them as they each pointed out which message on the hand they had prepared

with their senior partners! Be sure to see their project displayed outside the school cafeteria. The project will then move to Hickory Glenn for the residents to display there. Our Parish/School Gala is almost here! I hope that you have been able to buy a ticket ($50.00 per person) and will join us for this special evening next Saturday, March 3rd. Most of the planning committee are school parents. We are so grateful to them for sharing their gifts in this preparation. Thanks to the Room parents who have prepared the classroom baskets and to the teachers for the class projects, and to the parents and parishioners who have solicited auction items. You will want to be part of this fun night that will be held this year at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel downtown. The entertainment will be the “Dueling Pianos.” There are many new live auction items and a variety of silent auction baskets. Thank you to the many who have contributed in any way to this Parish and School event!

Thank you to our 67 families out of 199 who have participated in the Annual Fund Drive this year. Next week we will be launching a second parent phase of the Annual Fund. If you have not had the opportunity to participate, please consider a gift. The percentage of participation from our parents is used on Grant Writing applications that we prepare as those giving grants always want to know that our school parents are supportive of our programs. Please help us reach our 100% goal for participation of our parents! Next Wednesday, February 28th, our second graders and their parents will take part in the sacramental preparation First Communion meeting. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. It is very important that children accompany their parents as there are interactive family activities that are a part of this evening. Remember that we are teaching your children that our Catholic faith calls us to attending Mass each weekend. Children and parents who are a part of the sacramental preparation programs this year have an even more important role in helping to prepare your child(ren) for the reception of First Eucharist and Confirmation. Do we give a place to God in our weekends? We are a part of a school but also a parish. Let us help our children live their faith through our example. Barnes & Noble has announced “My Favorite Teacher Contest.” Attached to the e-mail copy of today’s Newsletter is an entry form that can be used to submit an essay, poem or thank-you letter explaining how a teacher has influenced a child’s life. These can be mailed to our local Barnes & Noble store by March 2, 2018, if your child wishes to submit something about their teacher. Faith Reflection: “Richard Pendall, in his short story “Somebody’s Son”, describes the homecoming of a runaway boy named David. He wrote his mother asking if his father would accept him again. If so, ask him to tie a white cloth to the apple tree in the field next to the house, he wrote. As David is on a train home, he knows that very soon the train will round the bend and the apple tree will be visible. But he is so apprehensive that he turns to a stranger and asks him to watch for the white cloth. David does not look. The stranger says in surprise, “Why, son, there’s a white cloth tied to practically every branch! Scripture tells us that our God is such a loving God, putting signs in our lives that remind us often of His love for us. Lent is a time for us to see and appreciate anew the many subtle signs of God’s love in our lives. It is also a time to offer forgiveness to those relationships that might need healing. Can we wave our own white cloths?” Praying with and for you and your children, Sr. Joan

Each parent/guardian is required to notify the school office by 8:30 a.m. if a child will be absent that day. Homework requests may be made at this time. Parents can always leave a message on the school answering machine if the secretary cannot be reached. The answering machine is checked regularly.

ABSENTEES

A call should be made each day the student is absent, unless it is known that the child will miss several consecutive days. If such is the case, the school can be informed with the first phone call of the consecutive absence and the reason. GRADE K Glub! Glub! Glub! Kindergarten is exploring the ocean this week. We are learning to share and be Peacebuilders with Rainbow fish. We are going to a play at UIS today to see "Nugget and Fang" who become friends. Sharks, octopus, crabs, o my! Thank you to our Parent Reader in Kb: Ms. Zosel SPRING MUSICIAL "ANNIE" Rehearsals are going great! Students and parents have been very considerate when a practice needs to be missed. Keep those grades up and study hard! Remember, eligibility is checked every week. We are in the process of starting to collect props and set pieces we need for our show. If anyone has any of the following items we could borrow, could you please contact me? We appreciate your help! We are in need of 3-4 folding cots, a laundry "bin" on wheels (big enough for Annie to hide in) and an old-fashioned radio. Thanks for your help! Mrs. DePatis VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Save the date for St. Agnes 2018 Vacation Bible School - “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus”. Vacation Bible School will from July 9-13, 9-11:30am.
