lowing the choice of senior Adam Bellamy – last season’s starter – to leave the team for personal reasons.

Sophomore J.T. Moore is listed as the No. 2 strongside end behind Bennett on the team’s official depth chart, but the coaching staff could opt to move Simon there from the weakside or Leo end, where he started last season and through-out spring and preseason practice in place of Williams.

At Leo, the top options pending Williams’ health are sophomore Steve Miller and true freshman Noah Spence.

The deep defensive line is home to three of the 10 true freshmen to make the initial game-week depth chart – Spence and tackles Adolphus Washington and Tommy Schutt. The others are lineback-ers David Perkins, Camren Williams and Joshua Perry; offensive linemen Taylor Decker and Jacoby Boren; running back Bri’onte Dunn; and wide receiver Michael Thomas.

When asked if he viewed the total of first-year players – there are also five redshirt freshmen including long snap-per Bryce Haynes on the depth chart – in line for playing time as unusual, Meyer responded in the negative.

“I haven’t done a study, but that’s prob-ably pretty normal now,” the coach said. “I kind of think, certainly in the last six years at places like Ohio State and Florida, you recruit guys to go play. You’re not recruit-ing them to redshirt.”

Overall, Meyer was happy with the day of work the Buckeyes put in Aug. 29, their last day of full-contact practice at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

“We’re not game-ready, but we’re close,” Meyer said. “We’re excited. You could tell by everybody’s demeanor. It was a good day.”

The day was a particularly positive one for four freshmen who earned the right to have the black stripes removed from their helmets, a move symbolic of earning status as a full member of the team – Perkins, Boren, cornerback Najee Murray and walk-on offensive lineman Logan Beougher.

After an offseason spent mostly talking about the installation of a new offense, the topic that dominated discussion during the first game week of the Urban Meyer era at Ohio State had to do with defense.

Specifically, that was the availability Nathan Williams – a senior end who spent preseason practices slowly and surely try-ing to complete a comeback from micro-fracture knee surgery – to face Miami (Ohio) in tomorrow’s season opener.

Meyer, the Buckeyes’ new head coach, announced Aug. 27 during his weekly press luncheon that Williams’ availability would be determined by the following two days of practice.

On Aug. 29, Meyer reported Williams had shown enough to warrant playing time against the RedHawks, but how much was yet to be determined.

“He practiced with our defense (Wednesday) and did live work (Tuesday),” Meyer said. “I’d like to get him on the field.”

Williams was expected to be a key part of the 2011 Ohio State defense after recording 12 tackles for loss, including 4½ sacks, in his first year as a starter in 2010. His absence caused a shuffling of the defensive line that reduced its overall speed, and the pass rush suffered notice-ably as a result.

This season, the Buckeyes are expect-ing to field a strong front four – perhaps with contributions off the bench from a few talented freshmen – but Williams’ return would give the staff a versatile weapon and more options for attacking opposing offenses.

The good feeling about the news of Williams’ availability was tempered by the revelation on Meyer’s weekly radio show Aug. 30 that Michael Bennett will be limited against Miami because of a groin strain. Bennett, a sophomore end, earned a role in the No. 1 defense during the preseason as Williams sat out. He was expected to start opposite senior John Simon at least until Williams was able to return on a full-time basis.

Aside from Bennett and Williams, there is no shortage of ends to pair with Simon, but all of the options are inexperienced fol-

Defense Put In Spotlight As 2012 Season Nears Beginning

man linebacker Conner Crowell moved from backup middle linebacker to No. 2 on the weak side behind sophomore starter Ryan Shazier and ahead of Perkins.

Camren Williams moved into the No. 2 MLB slot behind starter Curtis Grant, another sophomore.

Uniform ChangesAlthough he provided no specifics,

Meyer seemed to indicate Ohio State’s uniforms will bear some changes from last season.

“Nike met with us,” Meyer said. “They had our leadership council. … I just said, ‘Let’s make sure this is all right with (Heisman Trophy winning tailback) Archie Griffin and the former players. I don’t want to start breaking traditions around here.’ ”

Director of athletics Gene Smith was also consulted.

“I don’t care what we wear as long as we look really good,” Meyer said. “And don’t break a tradition. I don’t think it will be that much different. I hope it’s not.”

Whatever they are wearing, the Buckeyes will unveil Meyer’s version of the spread offense against a live opponent for the first time at Ohio Stadium.

Although weather forecasts are omi-nous with the remnants of Hurricane Isaac making their way into the Midwest, Meyer said his game plan won’t change because of a potential for rain.

“We might call the game different, but it’s the same game plan,” he said.

Expect Emotion Earlier in the week, Meyer left lit-

tle doubt about how he feels about the Buckeyes’ season opener.

“Obviously to say I’m very excited about Saturday would be a very shal-low statement because I think everybody knows that,” Meyer said Monday. “I’m very honored to be here, I’m honored to be the coach of the Ohio State football team and to come back home and coach in the great state of Ohio.”

He later joked he would need a folder with notes to help him keep his head in the game and not on the Ohio State marching band when it is playing “Hang On Sloopy.”

“It’s real,” he said with a smile. “I’m going to be coming out of my shoes a little bit. I was 4 or maybe 3½ years old when I first saw the Scarlet and Gray play, so it’s going to be emotional.”

school released a new official depth chart that included a few notable changes from one published in the middle of preseason camp.

Two seniors emerged as game-one starters after entering preseason camp listed as co-starters at their positions – Reid Fragel and Travis Howard.

Fragel will start at right tackle ahead of Decker, but both are expected to see time.

Howard will start at cornerback oppo-site sophomore Bradley Roby, giving the Buckeyes the same top pair at that position as last season. Howard beat out sophomore Doran Grant by impressing the coaching staff with an improved work ethic and attitude during camp.

“I really like coaching him right now

because he’s a lot of fun to be around,” Meyer said of Howard.

Other changes included senior Jake Stoneburner being listed as the “H” or slot receiver for the first time instead of tight end while redshirt freshman Nick Vannett and sophomore Jeff Heuerman were listed as co-starters at Stoneburner’s former position.

Dunn assumed the No. 2 running back spot behind junior Carlos Hyde with Jordan Hall removed from the starting lineup because of a foot injury that is expected to keep him out for a couple more weeks. Meyer said Hall has been able to resume jogging as part of his rehabilitation.

Washington and Schutt were listed as co-backups to junior Johnathan Hankins at defensive tackle while redshirt fresh-

Everyone wants to see how the Ohio State offense looks – with good reason, given head coach Urban Meyer’s his-tory of success when it comes to scoring points. But whether the team can get a pass rush on Miami QB Zac Dysert could be a much more accurate barometer for OSU’s success in 2012.

The Buckeyes simply weren’t able to put together much of a pass rush in 2011, averaging only 1.77 sacks per game to finish 72nd in the country and sixth in the Big Ten in that category. That was one of the major reasons Ohio State was in the middle of the pack nationally in third-down defense and finished sixth in the league in scoring defense.

Why did the Buckeyes struggle so much getting to the passer? A leading culprit was the knee injury suffered by senior Nathan Williams in the first game of the season. Williams was coming off a 4½-sack cam-paign and was expected to be the team’s primary speed rusher off the edge.

When Williams went out, John Simon had to take on the “Leo” role because youngsters J.T. Moore and Steve Miller weren’t quite ready. Though Simon fin-ished with a team-high seven sacks, the pass rush just wasn’t at the level it needed to be, and then-defensive coordinator Jim Heacock admitted the team’s hands were tied in that area.

There are reasons for hope, though, when it comes to 2012. Williams’ status is still up in the air as he tries to get back for the Miami game after microfracture surgery, but it sounds as if he could get a few plays against the RedHawks.

“We will try to get him in the game,” Meyer said Tuesday. “He passed the test to get in the game yesterday, but it wasn’t enough to let you know how much he’s going to play.”

By most accounts Miller had an outstand-ing offseason as well, while Ohio State also hit the recruiting trail hard and came up with five-star edge rusher Noah Spence as well as imposing interior linemen Adolphus Washington and Tommy Schutt.

It would be good news if the Buckeyes can get to Dysert. The RedHawks were one of just two teams in the country to give up more sacks than Ohio State in 2011.

BSB Staff Predictions

There are always a good number of unknowns coming into a season opener. This season, however, it feels like there are more than usual. No one knows exactly how the Ohio State offense will look. The defense should be better, but will it actu-ally produce more than it did last year? What about Miami? Will the RedHawks’ spread passing attack find success against Ohio State’s secondary?

Then there’s the weather. The rem-nants of Hurricane Isaac bring a 40 per-cent chance of rain tomorrow, according to the Weather Channel. Rain is definitely coming, but will it affect the game? If so, how much will it hinder both offenses?

No matter what happens with the weather, I expect Ohio State to give Urban Meyer a good start to his tenure. I will be very interested to see how the Buckeyes’ secondary looks against a solid passing attack – one that ranked No. 14 in the nation last year. Quarterback Zac Dysert has a potential future in the NFL accord-ing to some experts, so he will present a good first challenge. Still, even if Miami finds success offensively, Ohio State will score plenty of points.

Like everyone else, I’m eager to see what Meyer’s spread attack – one that is not as pass-heavy as Miami’s – will look like in action. Meyer has said he wants Ohio State to not only win but look good doing it. I bet they’ll do just that tomorrow at Ohio Stadium.

Final Score

Ohio State can’t lose its first game under the tutelage of Urban Meyer, can it? Well, anything is possible, but I’m going to have to count that outcome as pretty unlikely.

The Buckeyes have had an offseason to chew on the first losing season since most of them were born, and Meyer and his strength and conditioning staff kept their noses to the grindstone with a grueling offseason program and long, hard prac-tices in the spring and preseason.

Miami figures to give the Buckeyes some things to think about with a strong passing game led by quarterback Zac Dysert and wide receiver Nick Harwell, but I cannot see the RedHawks keeping up with Ohio State on the scoreboard even if the visitors dent the end zone a few times.

Their pass-happy attack offers a good challenge for a veteran OSU secondary that knows it was not one of the team’s strongest areas last season and is out to atone for that.

Although the hits at the top of the depth chart could hinder it – Nathan Williams and Michael Bennett are still iffy for the game – I expect the Ohio State defensive line to control the game with its size and athleticism. From there, it is up to the new-look offense to capitalize on opportu-nities it figures to get to make plays.

Rain could alter things, but that would benefit the bigger, stronger team in all likelihood.

BSB Staff Predictions

We’ve all been regulars to making weekly predictions on the Ohio State foot-ball games, but like all of our readers, the BSB staff hasn’t seen what this team will look like under Urban Meyer.

Given what we’ve come to find out about Meyer in the limited time he’s been coaching this team and in his past, we can draw some educated guesses on what to expect tomorrow. From my point of view, I’d tell Miami to look out.

There are multiple reasons I say that, but the thing that stuck out to me the most from fall camp was the comment Meyer made asserting that he cared about his team looking good in the process of win-ning. How does a team look good while winning? Well, I think making a statement by pouring on the points is probably a safe assumption.

It’s not that I expect Meyer to be malicious or unsportsmanlike with the RedHawks, but considering the Buckeyes have a lot of work to do on offense, I don’t see very many drives happening during which Ohio State isn’t going to have its foot firmly pushed on the pedal.

Meyer hasn’t hidden his desire to make a statement, and I expect him to do that in the game he’s waited his entire life to coach.

Final Score

This is one of the hardest predictions I’ve had to make simply because there are so many unknowns, most of which are obviously related to the dawn of the Urban Meyer era of Ohio State football.

I strongly believe this is going to be a very good football team sooner rather than later, but there are still many ques-tion marks that can’t be answered until we actually see the team on the field. How will the new scheme and offensive philosophy translate against a good but not great MAC foe? How will the defense handle a new coordinator and the offense’s new hurry-up scheme that could put it on the field for more plays? And will the change from Jim Tressel to Meyer result in more blowouts against overmatched nonconfer-ence foes?

With all those in mind, I’ll be some-what conservative here, and part of that is because I have a healthy respect for the RedHawks. Miami won just four games last year, but that probably wasn’t a true gauge of the team’s talent as it lost four games by one possession.

I think Miami will throw it well enough to score some points, I think the Ohio State offense will major in touchdowns rather than field goals, and I think it’ll be a comfortable win but not a blowout for the Buckeyes, leaving some things to work on as a solid Central Florida team comes to town for week two.

Final Score

I don’t want to say 100,000-plus jaws will be dropping tomorrow at Ohio Stadium, but with the exception of Francis Schmidt’s razzle-dazzle attack in the 1930s and the outlier seasons of 1998 and 2006 when Joe Germaine and Troy Smith shattered most of the school’s passing records, this year’s Ohio State offense should be unlike almost anything the Horseshoe has seen from the home team in its 90 years of existence.

Braxton Miller, who last year some-times looked like a lost freshman while other times performed like an out-and-out superstar, should be the primary benefi-ciary of the new offensive attack. Despite some uneven outings, Miller threw for 1,159 yards and 13 TDs while adding another 715 yards and seven scores on the ground. And that was produced from the most vanilla of offensive playbooks.

Amid all of the hopeful anticipation that Miller and his teammates will be keeping scoreboard operators busy all over the Big Ten, the fact remains that the Buckeyes are still a bit of a work in progress under first-year head coach Urban Meyer. That means the team is likely to suffer a stum-ble or two along the way.

But as far as first impressions are con-cerned, this should be a good one. The RedHawks have a potent passing attack but little else that would preclude Buckeye Nation from celebrating a successful open to season No. 123.
