The colourful, attractive and amusingevents of indoor competitions, games andsports and the Mandayam Mela wereconducted in a very systematic and organisedway successfully with the help and co-operation of young and old enthusiasticvolunteers. All the Saturdays and Sundays ofthe month of December 2007 was full ofcompetitions where many members of ourcommunity participated and enjoyed withfun. Theprogramme at Sri Ramanuja SamskritiBhavana started at 9.15 am with Fancy DressCompetition. This was a very attractive eventwhere many members competed includingchildren below 6 years. The audience enjoyedthe different fancy dresses, particularly of thechildren below 6 years.

“The Mandayam Srivaishnava Sabha isorganising programmes like Sri ThyagarajaAradhana, Sri RamanujacharyaThirunaksha-thram, Aadivellikkilamai andSocials every year. Besides these, the Sabhahas decided to celebrate Founder’s Day everyyear. This year from 1st December 2007 to23rd December 2007, Indoor competitionslike clay modelling, painting, cookery, StotraRatna, Rangoli, Hand Embroidery, Potpainting and vegetable carving werearranged on all Saturdays in Sri YadugiriYathiraja Mutt and Outdoor games likeVolleyball, Basket Ball, Cricket and fieldevents were conducted on all Sundays atvarious play grounds. The response by ourmembers was very good. Bangalore hasdeveloped very large and our communityfamilies have spread out all over and it isvery difficult to reach the venues on time. Toenable the members to come on time withoutwasting time to cook at home, the Sabha hadarranged sponsors to provide breakfast andlunch for all the members. Sri M. K. Varadan,Smt. Mekhala and Sri Sanjay, Smt. Geethaand Dr. (Vet) M. A. Srinivasan, Smt. Jayacharprovided breakfast and lunch on all the daysof Major Games. The Central Committeetakes lot of interest to havemore competitors(children, youth, adults, senior citizens) forcompetitions by posting and distributingmore than 900 pamphlets, but the responseis not much encouraging. It is observed thatthe enthusiasm and interest shown by thesenior citizens in all competitions was notfound in our jubilant youth. Here I fail in myreport if I don’t mention with pride a fewsenior citizens like Smt. Jaya Nayakan, agedabout 70 participated in Rangoli and thedesign was so symmetrical and perfect whichany youngster cannot write without a footrule and compasses. The same way SriyuthsM.D. Srinivasan, M. R. Srinivasan, R.M.Parthasarathy and Smt. Ratna Rajagopal

showed keen interest in participating in allthe competitions including games and sports. In indoor competitions the response forcookery, strotra ratna, rangoli, pot paintingand vegetable carving was very good whencompared to other events. On behalf of theSabha, I request every member to participatehereafter in each event arranged for you andmake the competitions more competitive.”

dedication. Sri M. B. Nagaraj read thecitation. Sri S. Parthasarathy completedninety years in February 2007. Thefelicitation address cited his uniqueprofessional achievements. His socialactivities especially towards the community, his association with the Yadugiri YathirajaMutt, Chennai, Saraswathi Bhandar and theM.O.P. Charities were also recalled. Sri S. Parthasarathy, the chief guest of theday, in his speech blessed the youth by givingexample of his own experiences and how heis even now at the age of 90 undertakes travel, looking after Goutham Ashram at Chennaiand other activities all alone withoutdepending on others. This is really anexample for all of us to follow his footstepswith courage and boldness.

The unsung heroines of our epics, a uniquefeature programmed and presented by Smt.Geetha Alwar, where 19 ladies and one boyadorned the roles and dresses of few selectedheroines of Ramayana and Mahabharataattracted the audience.

“The main character in the Ramayana andthe Mahabharatha are very famous. Everyone knows about them. However, there aremany other heroes and heroines in our epics

who are not so well known. They have alsoplayed important roles, but they have notbeen given due prominence in our art andliterature. Most people are ignorant of theirtrue greatness. Inspired by Ammangar Goda,Smt. Geetha Alwar gave a programme inwhich six unsung heroines selected from eachepic were portrayed. The essential characterof each heroine was brought out by actingthe respective part in appropriate settingaccording to the script written by AmmangarGodha which was read out in the background. Each heroine was just according to the regionto which she belonged to. Thus there weretwelve different type of dresses, hairstyle, jewellery and other ornamentation accordingto their region and social status. Differentpieces of classical music was provided byCol. Alwar to highlight the main emotitiongenerated by each heroine personality andcharacter. The show was well received withrepeated applause.

The castes comprised of Geetha Alwar(Director, narrator and Mandodari), LathaKrishna Kumar (Sri Rama and Dushyantha),Sunayana (Narrator and Dushyantha), RohiniRangarajan (Ahalya), Malathi Singlachar(Lopamudra), Ashwini (Urmila), AlameluSarathy (Shabari), Vidya Srinivasan(Thrijata), Ramya Srivas (Bhanumathi),Sarita Alwar (Shakuntala), Navaratna(Subhadra), Sujata Vasan (Ambe), M.G.Vedavalli (Gandhari), Aditi (Uttare), Pratima(Agastya, Vishwamitra and Mareecha),

MANDAYAM ALASINGA PERUMAL (1963-1909)

Vivekananda’s devoted dedicated disciple down SouthOf the innumerable disciples that Swami Vivekananda had all over India, there were a few

disciples whom Swamiji always remembered with gratitude for the assistance and service rendered tohim in sponsoring his trip to Chicago to attend the Parliament of World Religions in September 1893.Mandayam Alasinga Perumal from Madras was one such disciple who was one of the most ardentadmirers of the Swamiji. Alasinga, the name by which Swamiji used to address Perumal affectionately, was the foremost in making house to house collection of funds in Madras to arrange for Swamiji’sexpenses to go to Chicago. Remembering Alasinga’s help with gratitude, Swami Vivekananda haswritten:“One rarely finds men like our Alasinga in the world - One who is so unselfish, so hardworking andso devoted to his Guru. Such an obedient disciple is very rare on earth”.

It is well known that Swamiji was in deep meditation for three days on the Vivekananda Rocknear Kanyakumari in December 1892 where he had a great vision of the future of the country and cameto certain conclusions of what he should do to the country and how. With tears in his eyes and hope inhis breast, he discovered his mission in life, which was to dedicate himself to the regeneration of India. It was here he took a firm decision to attend the Parliament of Religions at Chicago and blazon forththe magnificence of our Sanathana Dharma to the West. When Alasinga Perumal heard about this, hefelt that it was a fine opportunity for the entire country to send Vivekananda to Chicago and that noefforts should be spared to miss such an opportunity. Immediately he collected a few close associatesof his and a sbscription Committee was formed to raise sufficient funds to sponsor the trip to Chicago. The members went from door to door collecting money, a thing that had never happened in Madras. Itappears that they were able to collect nearly Rs. 3,000 within four days. Besides the efforts of theSubscription Committee, there were other philanthropists like the Maharaja of Mysore, the Raja ofRamanad, and Khetri Maharaja etc. who helped the noble cause voluntarily. Finally, Swamiji set forUnited States from Bombay on 31st May 1893 by the P&O Steamer Peninsular. Alasinga was at thePort to see Swamiji off.

Recollecting the efforts of his young disciples from Madras in making him go to Chicago,Swamiji in one of the letters said “The Madras people have done for me more than I deserved andmore than was in their power. My thanks eternal to the Madras young men, led by Alasinga.” Again ina letter to Swami Abhedananda in October 1895, Vivekananda writes “In effect Mr. Sterdy is mySecretary in England, Mahendra Bapu in Calcutta and Alasinga in Madras”. When Vivekananda wasin the United States, among the many letters which he wrote, forty of them were addressed to “Alasinga”.In a glorious tribute to Alasinga, Subramanya Bharatiyar has said “Alasinga was one of the chiefdisciples of Swamiji. When in 1893 Vivekananda came to the South like any of the wandering mendicants,it was Alasinga Perumal who discovered the splendour of Vivekananda and brought glory to thenation.”

Swamiji wrote several letters from America to some of his close disciples in India. In all these,he stressed the importance and the power of journalism as a powerful tool in spreading the tenets ofour Sanathana Dharma, in addition to building up an effective organization. In a letter from New Yorkdated 25th September 1894, he expressed a desire to start a magazine in Sanskrit and one in Hindi, inaddition to a magazine in English. His young disciples from Madras took up the clue and as wasexpected, Alasinga took the initiative in starting an English magazine in response to Swamiji’s desire. He discussed this issue with a few close associates, formed a committee and prepared and published aprospectus for the new journal. A relevant paragraph of the prospectus said:

INNER WORTH IS BETTER THAN OUTER SHOW.

Page 15: Srimathe Ramanujaya Namahamandayamsabha.in/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Mandayam-News-2… · FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK I am very happy that the Mandayam Socials and Mela conducted

“Under the advice and with the encouragement of Swami Vivekananda, it is proposed to starta weekly journal to be named “Brahmavadin”. The main object of the journal is to propagate theprinciples of the Vedantic religion of India and to work towards the improvement of the social andmoral conditions of man by holding aloft the sublime and universal ideal of Hinduism.” Brahmavadincould not appear as a weekly as noted in the prospectus but came out as a fortnightly. The first issuewas dated 14th September 1895 and was issued from Triplicane, Madras. It had 14 pages and its firsteditor was Alasinga Perumal.

Swamiji got many people to subscribe to the ‘Brahmavadin’, wrote articles to the paper andoffered guidance and advice. In a letter written to Alasinga Perumal, Swamiji gave the followingadvice on the style that he must adopt: “You must always remember that you are addressing the wholeworld, not India alone, and that the same world is entirely ignorant about what you have to tell them.Use the translations of every Sanskrit shloka very carefully and make things as easy as possible”. ThusBrahmavadin became the first voice of the Swamiji to be followed by the Prabuddha Bharata in1896.

Apart from the magazine, the Brahmavadin Company, founded by Alasinga Perumal, alsostarted publishing some selected books under the title “Brahmavadin Series”. The first of the serieswas ‘Karma Yoga’ which was published in 1896 and contained the lectures that Swamiji delivered inNew York between December 1895 and January 1896. The book was priced and sold at one anna(1/16th of a rupee). In September 1896, the Brahmavadin published ‘The Ideal of Universal Religion’which was a lecture delivered by the Swamiji in America and was priced at one rupee. In 1897, twomore books were published namely, ‘Six Madras Lectures of the Swamiji’ and the book ‘FromColombo to Almora - Seventeen Lectures’.

It can be observed from the above these lectures in the form of a book were brought out withinthree to four months of their delivery in America at an incredibly astonishing speed. Given the fact thatabout 120 years back, communication and printing technology were in their infancy.Sri Perumal passed away in Madras on 11th May 1909.

THE HEBBAL LAKEBeautiful lake on the way to my school

With fans and cranes relaxing coolSome people with their binaculars

Some with the fishing rod sitting by the lakeDoing their job

But now when the news is spread all aroundThe lake completely dry !!

There is no water on the groundHere when the Hotel Oberoy is coming

No water No fishes No bird watchingAnd now the people are also sad

Because their happiness has all gone badWe’ll have to protect and debate
