WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SQUIRREL HILL!

SPOTLIGHT ON YOUR HEALTH

As summer approaches, the family trips are being

finalized for the beach and amusements parks. The

beaches will be filled with families and children. The sun

will be beating down on the golden sands of the beaches,

baseball fields and amusement parks.

While having fun in the sun, families must be aware of the

dangers of heatstroke.

Heatstroke is a medical condition when the core body

temperature is 105ºF or higher and can lead to severe

central nervous system danger.

SOME SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEATSTROKE:

• incredibly hot skin

• dizziness and fainting

• extreme fatigue, nausea and/or vomiting

• rapid heartbeat

• mental confusion

• seizures

• lack of sweating

• severe headache

If you have been in the sun and or in high temperatures and

start to exhibit these symptoms you must seek medical

attention as soon as possible.

While in the sun, keep hydrated with water and seek

shaded area as much as possible. The summer is time for

fun and relaxation be safe hydrated and have fun.

Let’s face it, Americans love to eat. Not only do we love to eat, but we love

the experience that goes along with it. Going “Out to Dinner” is usually

viewed as a special experience. Barbecuing in the backyard is more than

cooking a meal, it is a time to show off to your friends and neighbors your

culinary skills. At the Squirrel Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Healing, we

do not want any of that to change.

For the last year, the Squirrel Hill Dietary Department has been busy creating

dining programs that not only please the taste buds, but also create a fun dining experience. Each month the kitchen

plans a “Night Out.” During these “Night Outs,” the usual meal is change to a theme centered on specific dining fare.

We have had Italian, Mexican, American Restaurant themed meals where three to four choices are presented and the

Residents can eat “off the menu” when they arrive. Breakfast is a hard meal to serve in a community. Eggs and waffles

get cold quickly, toast hardens after a few minutes. But there is nothing better than the smell of breakfast cooking;

bacon sizzling, warm toast. Squirrel Hill came up with a way to bring that dining experience back. Twice a month the

Residents gather for a Breakfast Buffet in our main dining room. Not only do our Residents get a hot off the griddle

meal, but we also offer additional selections not normally served. Yes, you can still get an over easy egg in a facility,

just ask on Breakfast Buffet day. No matter your age, birthdays should be celebrated and everyone enjoys a little

extra attention on their day. We began providing a birthday lunch to celebrate the lives of our Community Members.

Our dietary staff meet with each Resident a few days before their birthday to find out what they would like as their

birthday meal. A quick trip to the grocery store produces a great birthday present for the most finicky eaters. The

Good Humor Man, or in our case Woman, comes every Friday to Squirrel Hill. A cart loaded with ice cream circulates

in the community with its upcoming arrival announced by music and bells bringing back memories of asking

your parents for money and then chasing the Good Humor truck down the street to pick your prize.

Our Dietary Department has really climbed on board and enjoys creating these events for our Residents.

It gives our cooks a time to show off their skills, and interact with our Community members providing a

personal touch. Receiving the compliments is a great thing but nothing beats the satisfaction of hearing

rave reviews from our Residents regarding a much enjoyed, and appreciated, Dining Experience.
