Introduction

SPS UA9 runs are used to test the principle of crystal-assisted collimation system.UA9 apparatus is placed in the LSS5 of the SPS where scintillators and BLMs are used to measure beam losses downstream any key device.

July run overviewThis run was a kick-off of UA9 measurements in 2015. Update wrt the last year are:

• Installation of Piezio-Goniometer Prototype (same as the two installed in LHC)• Installation of CpFM Prototype• New read-out electronics (Wave Catcher) used for the first time to get the scintillators

signals• Special read-out COBRA card for CpFM. This electronics is suited for FFT analysis of

CpFM signals in the range [Hz-GHz]

• SPS has an issue with a quadrupole causing orbit shift -> scans are affected by spikes • Starting from this run BPM are used in online and offline analysis to detect the beam orbit

variation.

Piezo-Goniometer testPiezo-Goniometer is a prototype developed under the supervision of A. Masi (EN/STI).

• Fundamental test of the hardware for future LHC experiments:– two goniometers are already installed in the LHC– a laboratory test bench device has allowed to develop and test a sophisticated,

optimised control system– the goniometer installed in SPS was used for the first test with the beam during the data

taking in July• The alignment procedure was completed very quickly (less than 15’).• The scan to find the channeling orientation took longer then expected.
