This Lunch-and-Learn workshop will introduce students to the pioneers who built Greater Miami during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Men and women of different backgrounds used their brains and their strength to turn land filled with native plants and animals (including the troublesome mosquito) into a community that has since welcomed millions of people from around the world. Many of these groundbreakers were not without flaws. But they had a strong resolve to create and shape a place they and many others could call home. Reminder: Bring your lunch (brown-bag) to the class.

Politics is news – all the time. Groucho Marx once said, “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.” Dr. Kurt Stone will take us on an insider’s probe of the week’s stories, with an eye toward proving Groucho wrong. Dr. Stone – best-selling author, lecturer, political operative in Washington and California, “world-class news junky” – takes the stories apart. The “players” and the “sides” are uncovered, political implications emerge, and solutions may magically appear.

Behind the Silver Screen: The Making of Six Classic Movies

Instructor: Dr. Kurt F. Stone Spring Dates: 6 Wednesdays: April 22, 29 and May 6, 13, 20, 27Time: 2:45 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.Course Fee: $100 Course Number: OLL0673SPLocation: Academic II Building – Room 212 (Biscayne Bay Campus)Next to perhaps the design and construction of a medieval cathedral there has never been a more collaborative art form than the motion picture. For it takes hundreds – sometimes thousands – of people both in front of and behind the camera to go from a raw idea to the silver screen. Working with an army of creative artists and artisans, writers, actors, designers, musicians, choreographers and painters, as well as publicity flacks, number crunchers and even animal trainers, can be an unwieldy ulcer-inducing process. That Hollywood studios could turn out one film a week, 52 weeks a year, is nothing short of a miracle. This course, relying on Dr. Stone’s encyclopedic knowledge of “all things Hollywood” will take us behind the scenes to investigate and experience the thousand-and-one details which went in to the making of six classic films: The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia and The African Queen. “Ilustrative segments of each film will be shown” Dr. Stone guarantees that all those taking this class will gain a profound new respect for film that most collaborative of all arts.

in New Amsterdam, Jews have played a leading – though often anonymous – role on the stage of American politics. Although hailing from countries and cultures that debarred them from the political process, once in America, Jews quickly discovered that they did have a civic voice. Initially serving as constables, sheriffs and members of town councils, the Jews of America would eventually become state legislators and mayors, ambassadors, and elected members of Congress. This course will examine the leading personalities, politics and achievements of the Jewish community in American political history. We will pay special attention to the inherent tension that has always existed between politics and religion, and investigate how, traversing that tightrope, the Jewish community has helped shape modern American society. The six weekly lectures are entitled: In the Beginning, Disunion, The Socialist Agenda, America’s New Deal, the Holocaust and Its Aftermath and, Zionism and McCarthyism.
