Spring Term

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this term’s Community News; where, as always we have great news to share as our students and staff continue to shine.

This term we have several members of staff who have been recognised for going ‘above and beyond’: Assistant Headteacher, Pete Bond, received the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award from Saltash Town Council for his service to the young people of Saltash; a well-deserved accolade. PE teacher, Dan Budd, has been shortlisted in the Sports Teacher of the Year category of the Cornwall Teacher Awards 2018; and Science Teacher, Sarah Cresswell along with English teacher, Gemma Watson, have been nominated in the Pearson Teaching Awards. Results will be announced later in the year, so watch this space!

These pages are full, as always, of student successes: students have performed superbly well in a wide range of activities. Our sports teams continue to top the tables and we were proud to win the Mayor’s Cup for ‘Best Production’ of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. Not only that, but our musicians continue to be applauded; last week at Songfest and tonight at the Spring Concert in school. What a lovely way to end the term.

On that note (ha!) as I write, Year 8 are enjoying a Community Day. They are all off-timetable taking part in a series of workshops focussing on tolerance, equality, understanding and community. Tomorrow we will be thinking about ourselves as citizens of the global community by supporting the charity ‘Dig Deep’ through a non-uniform day and raffle.

Year 11, in particular, have shown exceptional grit this term, ploughing through a second set of mock exams. I am pleased to say that all the hard work is paying off! Their mock results were higher than last year’s Year 11s final outcomes, so if they continue to make the progress between now and May as they did from December to March the sky really will be the limit. Onwards and upwards!

Thank you so much for all of your support with regards to improving attendance. We are making great progress here too and it was lovely to see so many of you come in to our coffee mornings to acknowledge and celebrate both excellent attendance and improved attendance.

On the subject of attendance, three teachers will be attending no more! Tomorrow we say goodbye to Dave Stokes (Head of Year), Vicky Higgs (Geography teacher) and Andy Thompson (Maths teacher). I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for all they have done for the students during

their time here. They will be missed, but we wish them well as they take the next steps in their lives.

Have a wonderful Easter; let’s hope the sun shines.

With all good wishes,

Kate LittledykeHeadteacher

Saltash.net’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors” gave audiences four fantastic evenings of entertainment, with tremendous performances from both casts. The success of the show has been recognised by Saltash Town Council, with the production recently being presented the Citizen Award for Best Performance and the Mayor’s “Peter Stephens Best Performance Cup”.

The zany musical, written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and tells the story of Seymour Krelborn. Seymour is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II”, after his crush at the shop.

Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice and an unquenchable thirst for HUMAN BLOOD. The Musical includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Suddenly, Seymour”.

Due to the huge amount of talent here at saltash.net, Director, Emily Venner and Musical Director, Nicola Silvester decided to have two casts of leading roles. Assuming the role of Seymour was Year 12 student Richard Tolman, in Cast 1 and Year 10 Student Brandon Escott, in Cast 2. Both boys played the parts incredibly well and the audiences couldn’t help but adore Seymour. The

role of Mushnik, the owner of the flower shop, was brilliantly played by Year 10 student Jemima Budd.

Performing alongside Seymour was Grace Hodge (Year 10), who played Seymour’s love interest Audrey on all four nights beautifully; engaging the audience with her kind and naïve nature.

Tyler Stapleton and Tommy Williams were both outstanding as the creepy dentist, and their performance of the song “Dentist” both impressed and scared the audience equally!

The incredible voice of Plant was provided by Molly Banks and India James, wowing audiences every night with their outstanding jazzy tones. Both worked closely with Oliver Crawford, who was our amazing puppeteer.

The two different casts of Urchins- who narrate and lead the show with songs in close harmony -were played by Sophie Watson, Chloe Lynch, Megan Kelly, Eva Kleckham- Ager (Cast 1) and Molly Willis, Ellie Wanless, Jazmine Leslie and Lottie Ryder-Wearne (Cast 2).

Also deserving of mention were the band who were almost entirely student-

led with Maisie Glazebrook (Year 12) on keyboard, Harry Pascoe and Tommy Williams (Year 12) on brass, Josh Dolan (Year 10) on bass, Cameron Snook (Year 9) on guitar, Matthew Chapman (Year 8) on drums and Matthew Pascoe (Year 9) on percussion- they were fantastic and it was lovely to see students represented in the band. Delicious refreshments at the performances were provided in the canteen by the Saltash.net PTA and World Challenge team.

Director, Emily Venner, expressed her delight at the success of the performance.

She said: “The annual productions have become a huge part of Performing Arts at saltash.net and they are a great opportunity for students of all ages and abilities to work together in a different environment. We’ve had students from all year group involved, whether that’s Year 13 Media and Drama students Micah Barlow and James Peek filming the show, or Kallum Eccleston from Year 8 who was our backstage manager, or the cast who ranged from Years 7 to 12.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has supported the production, including members of our community: we honestly couldn’t have done it without your support. I must end this by saying how impressed I’ve been with our amazing students; they really stepped up the challenge. It was a fun show to put together- who doesn’t love stories about man eating plants?!”

Saltash.net welcomes world famous Pennywell miniature pigs to saltash.net

Saltash.net community school is delighted to have become home to some of Pennywell Farm’s world famous miniature pigs after Charlotte, who was on loan at the school, gave birth to nine healthy piglets.

Charlotte, who was bred at Pennywell Farm, arrived at the school shortly before Christmas, and staff and students had eagerly waited for her to farrow. This is the first time that Pennywell have ever loaned one of their pigs, which all have a gentle, friendly character.

Charlotte’s time at saltash.net went so well that Pennywell Farm have offered to loan us another pregnant Pennywell Miniature Pig, an offer which we have been more than happy to accept! The pig, who is called Amber, will be joining us on the 29th March, when we will also be returning Charlotte to Pennywell Farm.

During their time at saltash.net, Charlotte’s piglets had lots of cuddles with students and were a key focus of saltash.net’s BTEC Animal Care course and Farm Club. Students got the opportunity to develop leadership skills by applying to become livestock managers, where they helped assist in the care of the micro pigs. Charlotte and her piglets were also used as inspiration for

a variety of different lessons, including Philosophy and the Sciences.

Mrs Blackmore, Animal Care and Science teacher at saltash.net is delighted with how the initiative worked out.

“Both students and staff at saltash.net were really looking forward to Charlotte farrowing and have made the most of her and her piglets’ time at the

school! As well as being incredibly cute, the litter have provided great opportunities to help students grow in confidence and develop social skills, whilst learning a sense of responsibility and respect for life.

“Helping to care for the piglets has given students a sense of pride and accomplishment, especially as the piglets have returned the affection! We are really grateful to Pennywell Farm for the experience of looking after Charlotte and her piglets and are excited to be welcoming Amber soon!” she said.

‘Try for Change’ rugby students enjoy royal meeting at Twickenham!

A group of Year 11 students at saltash.net recently spent a day with the Exeter Chiefs, as part of the ‘Try for Change’ project, which develops employability skills through rugby. A BBC Sport Relief film crew was present, and England Rugby have released a short video with footage from the day; in this the students offer their feedback on how the project has had a positive impact on their education.

The students have been part of the project for the last ten weeks, developing their skills through weekly visits by coaches from Plymouth Sports Charity. The project is funded by Sport Relief, and as the students had progressed so well over the course, they were selected to take part in this day which enabled all involved to come together.

A BBC crew followed the students throughout the day, filming students playing rugby and enjoying lunch with two England players, Sam Simmonds

and Alec Hepburn, who play for the Exeter Chiefs.

All of our young people conducted themselves extremely well on the day and have really thrived throughout the project. Two students, Josh Ainsworth and Hayden Cole, were selected to chat 1 to 1 with the England players in front of the film crew.

They shared stories about their lives with the players, positive changes

they are making and are intending to make and how the project has helped them. They were outstanding.

As a result of this project, students Josh Ainsworth, Hayden Cole, Alex Bulley and Ben Haly had the opportunity to go and watch England train at Twickenham during February half term. They met with Prince Harry and rugby royalty Johnny Wilkinson, a number of England players and were also able to train on the pitch.

Josh and Hayden will now take part in a half time rugby match, during the England v Ireland six nations clash at Twickenham in March, in front of 80,000 people.

Footage from the day can be found on the school’s website, at the following link - http://saltash.net/rugby-students-royal-meeting-twickenham/.

Year 7 students improve analytical reading with Skern Lodge residential

Fifteen lucky Year 7 students were chosen to take part in an adventurous residential trip aimed at improving their analytical English reading skills. On Monday 15 January the group, along with Miss Halliday and Mr Hodson, travelled up to Bideford to spend three days at the wonderful Skern Lodge.

On the first day the pupils split into two groups and were faced with the challenge of a group assault course. They needed to focus and communicate with each other in order to complete the course.

Our brilliant instructors, Alex and Russel, supported us and both groups managed to complete every element

of the course. Students then took part in archery, which helped them when thinking about the analysis of ‘The Hunger Games’, which we had completed before leaving school. The second day started with a rafting trip that led into Bideford and involved a rather chilly play in the water! The first lesson at Skern Lodge saw the pupils use the experience of rafting to help analyse the message of the poem ‘A River’s Story’.

Students faced the biggest challenge of the trip in the afternoon: tunnels. This involved crawling through extremely tight spaces in the pitch dark, with many confronting fears of darkness and claustrophobia, but bravely still giving it a go. With support from each other, all managed to successfully complete the task. The emotions of this experience really helped in the lesson, when looking at the tone created by J.K. Rowling in describing ‘The Chamber of Secrets.’

The final day saw students take part in a coastal traverse round Westward Ho, facing some extreme weather and tricky scrambles across the rock. This experience helped with analysis of Joe Simpson’s ‘Touching the Void’ back in the classroom and all managed to show incredible progress in their analysis.

This trip was a really fun experience that primarily helped build the confidence of all involved. They were a real asset to our school and made Miss Halliday and Mr Hodson very proud. The students will now be able to apply these skills to their lifelong learning journey.

Two teams of saltash.net students have reached the 3rd round of the Youth Speaks competition, delivering fantastic performances in the first two rounds.

Organised by the Rotary Club, Youth Speaks offers students a chance to present on a topic of their choice, where students must deliver their topic following the competition’s outline. This is the first time in many years that saltash.net has entered two teams in the competition.

The Intermediate and Senior teams progressed through the 1st round, which was held at saltash.net on the 17th January, before delivering tremendous performances in the 2nd round at Callington Community College on the 21st February, which saw them through to the 3rd round.

The Intermediate team chose to present on the topic of LGBT students and their rights in the school environment. The team delivered excellent presentations, with the judges in both rounds noting the students’ great passion for the topic, which helped see them through to the 3rd round.

The team comprises Isobel Whittam (Chair), Corlissa Waites (Main Speaker) and Ellie Kevern (Proposer of the Vote of Thanks), all Year 9 students, who represented saltash.net with pride and commitment.

The Senior team delivered speeches on the complex topic of whether refugees should be allowed to seek asylum in the UK. The team, made up of Year 12 students Lucie Jones (Chair), Katie Matlock (Main Speaker) and Tommy Williams (Proposer of the Vote of Thanks), argued the two sides of this topic, debating the financial strain it places on the country against our duty to help those in need.

The 1st round judges praised the team’s detailed consideration of the debate, whilst the 2nd round judges commended their real teamwork.Competition in the 2nd round was very tough but both teams progressed, with the judges noting that the other teams should not be disappointed, as it’s not often a school pulls out two performances like saltash.net did!

A team of saltash.net students have impressed judges at the South West Regional Final of the world’s most famous STEM competition, ‘F1 in Schools’, winning two trophies in the first year the school has entered.

The team competition challenges 11-19 year olds to develop a rigorous engineering skill-set that they can place into a highly supportive competitive setting.

The competition requires students to develop a model F1-style car that can be launched down a 20m track with the aid of a CO2 canister, mounted in the back of the car. The team also have to produce a portfolio that explains the story behind their team and their car’s development, as well as make a verbal presentation to a panel of judges.

They also have to produce a ‘Pit display’ that shows off their branding, sponsorship and merchandise that mirrors the more corporate side of Formula 1. The winning team is the one that scores well across all elements, and not necessarily the team that claims the prize for having the fastest car.

The team of four Year 8 students and one Year 7 student travelled to South Devon UTC, having spent eight weeks developing a car using Computer

Aided Design (CAD) in a club run by Head of DT, Mr Jolly. The team were also very fortunate to have been supported by a parent who is equally passionate about Design Technology and engineering opportunities for young people.

The judges were very impressed with the young team of Jack Robinson, Holly Davis, Ellen Marsh, Owen Johns and Archie Horne, and what they had achieved in such a short space of time. The team, known as ‘2Fast’, took the trophies for winning the Entry class and the fastest car in their class. Although being in the Entry class, the car was faster than some from more experienced teams.

Design Technology is the most practical element of the STEM subjects and the competition contains many aspects of its GCSE coursework. It is an opportunity for Key Stage 3 students to develop their interest in the subject before they are able to choose it in Year 9.

Mr Jolly was pleased with the progress the students made.

“The students learned a huge amount about the standard required to return next year in a higher class. They recognised in themselves, the aspirations shown by like-minded students from across the region, and even developed their media skills - handling an interview with local radio very well!

“It’s always a good feeling to win, but this a young team who already are looking to compete on equal terms in the Development or Professional class next year,” he said.

As winners of the Entry class, they are given VIP invitations to watch the National Final at Silverstone in March.

Saltash.net students had an amazing morning at the Science showcase at Plymouth University, experiencing all things science and technology.

As part of the Plymouth University Children’s passport scheme, saltash.net was invited to bring fifty students along to the University; fifty Y8 students were the lucky chosen ones.

They sampled a range of activities within the showcase tent, including Segways, mini robots, giant bubbles finger identification, and eye recognition.

They thoroughly enjoyed all of the stands they visited. It was lovely to see saltash.net students grow in confidence throughout the morning and they certainly were inspired by what they saw and the opportunity they had to ask University students questions.

All students involved were a pleasure to take and we look forward to our next visit.

50 Year 8 students experience Science showcase at Plymouth University

We were delighted to invite over thirty xolleges, universities, training providers, the military and other companies and organisations to our Post 16 pathways evening to set up stands and meet with parents and students.

We had a record amount of students and parents attend on the evening from Years 9-13 and were so proud to see so many of our young people making important decisions around their future choices.

Organisations in attendance were impressed with the attitudes of our students and the evening was a fantastic success. A big thank you to Mrs Boulton for helping to organise.

Saltash.net launches Children’s University Passport initiative

We were thrilled to see so many of our Year 7’s attending the Children’s University Passport scheme launch evening, where they were treated to cream teas and goodie bags.

They all left inspired by Year 12 student George Seymour who talked about the importance of taking opportunities, as well as the skills that he has developed through opportunities he has taken himself.

In addition to learning about how the scheme works, it was great to hear from Zoe and Philippa who run the scheme from Plymouth University.

All students in attendance went home with their passports and I have been thrilled to see how many students are already collecting their stamps, taking responsibility for building their skills, and ultimately making themselves more employable.

We are thrilled that over seventy Year 7 students have signed up to the scheme. Please contact [email protected] should you have any questions about the scheme.

Saltash.net teams up with Plymouth Raiders and Marjon University

In the last week of term, a select group of Year 11 students were given the opportunity to burn off some Christmas excitement by taking part in a basketball and creative writing day, run by the English department in partnership with Plymouth Raiders and Marjon University.

The students were given a morning session of basketball skills and games, led by professional coaches from the

Raiders team. Three of the first-team players – point guard Neil Watson, guard Jared Adekoya and forward Kinu Rochford – were on hand at the end of the session to inspire our young learners with anecdotes about their own routes to success.

After a university lunch, students completed a challenging creative writing workshop based on their experiences on the basketball court, in the academic surroundings of the Marjon campus. The campus location inspired the students to produce some outstanding written work, and everyone took something positive away from the day.

Saltash.net would like to thank Marjon University for hosting this event and Plymouth Raiders for giving their valuable time.

National Apprenticeship Week 5th - 9th March

Students enjoy construction event

National Apprenticeship Week was embraced at saltash.net, as the school invited a range of apprentices into school to host open sessions with our Year 10 students, who are interested in apprenticeships as their potential next step in education.

The visiting apprentices answered questions on their journeys and their apprenticeships, what they do on a daily basis and the benefits of following their path.

They also gave our students some great advice, emphasisng the importance of achieving the best grades they can in their GCSE’s and stressed the importance of Maths and English!

Saltash.net was pleased to welcome John Lee from South West Highways who came in to school to work with our Year 10 students who are potentially interested in careers linked to construction.

All students in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt about the jobs that exist within construction.

After listening about careers in constructions students had the opportunity to work in groups and to build bridges out of paper, string and sellotape, All involved relished this task and demonstrated both good initiative and amazing team work.

Raiders and Argyle stars inspire reading at saltash.net

To celebrate World Book Day, saltash.net welcomed players from Plymouth Argyle and Plymouth Raiders into school to inspire students and act as reading role models for them. Sixty students that attend the school’s basketball club and represent the school’s football teams were invited into the library to enjoy a book quiz, before being joined by Plymouth Argyle’s Luke McCormick and Robbert Te Loeke and Zak Wells, Eddie Matthew, Will Neighbour and Stefan Djukic from Plymouth Raiders. The players spoke about their life journey, and how valuable reading and studying have been for them, before moving around the room for a Q and A session and to discuss books students had chosen from the library. The players talked to the students about what they enjoyed to read and their own experiences of school life and studying, as well as the grit and resilience required to get to where they wanted to be. Following this, the players were more than happy to pose for a few selfies, which the students (and some staff members) were very keen to take! Thank you to the players and their clubs for coming in to inspire our young people.

World Book Day 2018Saltash.net belatedly celebrated World Book Day on the 16th March, with a day of costumes and literary activities, with the theme of team work encouraged throughout.

The rescheduled World Book Day, which had been due to take place on the 2nd March but was cancelled due to the heavy snow closing the school, saw some fantastic costumes from both students and staff.

Costumes ranged from Goku and Vegeta from Dragonball Z, to Captain James Nicholls from War Horse. Library Manager Mrs Warwicker came dressed as Stanley Yelnats from Holes, with acting Head of English Mrs Watson dressing as Tinkerbell.

Students were encouraged to create a design for the new school library card, and took part in a number of team work activities throughout the day. This followed an earlier quiz in the library that saw ten teams compete, with the ironically named team ‘I don’t like books’ winning the competition.

Earlier in the week, Mrs Warwicker also took two groups of students to Tor Bridge High to join in their World Book Day celebrations. One Year 7 group saw author Sally Nicholls talk about the Suffragette movement, and had the opportunity to buy signed books.

The second group, which was a mixture of Year 7 and Year 8 students, met author Kathryn Evans, who talked about the importance of grit and resilience, and their role in becoming an author.

Saltash.net was privileged to recently welcome First Officer Michaela Brown into school for the day. Invited on board were students across years 8, 10 and 11, who listened to interesting and exciting tales of how it feels to be in the driving seat of a 66 tonne machine tearing through the sky at 980 km/h!

Aspirations soared sky-high on the day, as students were encouraged to pursue their wildest dreams and explored the initial steps they need to take in order to achieve them. Budding pilots and eager Sixth Formers also took up the opportunity to speak to our high-flying guest and were left inspired and ready to work hard.

Michaela was delighted with the students’ interest in her work.

“It was a fantastic experience meeting the children from saltash.net and hearing what amazing ambitions they have for their future! I would encourage all of the children to follow their dreams and not be put off by how unrealistic it may seem at first,” she said.

We are very grateful for the time that Pilot Brown gave to visit saltash.net; she certainly left her mark on our students, it was a truly memorable day!

U16 girls’ team retain claim third consecutive football County

Championship crownSaltash.net community school’s under-16 girls football team were crowned county champions on Thursday 25 January, after a tense final in Bodmin which saw them emerge victorious against Penryn College. Nothing could separate the two sides, with the game remaining goalless, even after extra time.

The game was settled with the dreaded penalty shootout. The score reached 6-6, with saltash.net dispatching their 7th, with Penryn College missing to end the epic final. As captain Lucy Kane lifted the shield, there was a definite sense of relief for the saltash.net players, in addition to the joy of the celebrations.

Penryn College had the better chances in the match, but were stopped at every opportunity by an outstanding performance from saltash.net goalkeeper Merryn Richmond.

While saltash.net’s team were delighted, they were first to recognise and respect their opponents who had made them battle all the way to achieve victory. The win means the team have retained the trophy, and won four of the last five girls’ under 16 county championships.

Team coach, Mr Budd, was delighted with the performance.

“I am exceptionally proud and pleased for the team who showed real resilience to earn the victory. No team deserved to lose that game and both teams can be proud of producing such a great final and advert for girls’ school football,” he said.
