Dear Friends and Guests of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois,

This is where our general manager Reto Kocher usually greets you with a few introductory words. But in future it will be a member of staff from our international team who will address you here. We are hoping this will offer you new perspectives into the world of a family owned Grand Hotel and introduce you to the enormous diversity of our staff – because it is first and foremost our emplo-yees, with their warmth and dedication to their jobs, who impart our hotel with its true splendour.

”Rich in history, young at heart”. Ten years after the reopening of the Les Trois Rois in March 2006, we have decided to refresh the hotel‘s visual appearance with verve, youthfulness and bright colours. And yet we remain very proud of our history, spanning more than 300 years, which is palpable in every corner of the hotel. These are mutually stimulating, complementary: our buildings, with their architectural-historical significance, elegant interiors

and modern infrastructure form the setting for an exten-ded family of creative employees from more than 20 nations – a well-integrated team always at your service.

And speaking of our history: In January 2016 we joined the Association of Swiss Historic Hotels which raises public awareness about the significance of historical hotel buildings and the careful handling of their precious substance. We are delighted to be involved in this project and to be able to contribute to this important topic.

A great deal of zeal and hard work has also been chan-nelled into our latest project, the ”Fleurs des Rois”; with flowers it is possible to imbue life with a great deal of colour and joy. Our skilled floristry unit, which has been cause for a great deal of positive resonance in the hotel and far beyond since the re-opening, has encouraged our decision to now take things a step further. And so, this year, just a few steps away from the hotel in the heartof the city, we are going to be opening a small but

charming flower shop. Enjoy the surprises it offers and look forward to the ”Fleurs des Rois” with us.

This spring, the art city of Basel is being enriched with a new museum building – the extension to the art museum by Christ & Gantenbein and the renovated main building which will be ceremoniously opened in mid-April. The new building will be primarily dedicated to special exhibitions which till now were housed in the main building.

The major special exhibition ”Sculpture on the Move” is the first: Selected works from the Kunstmuseum Basel and eminent pieces on loan from other international museums will show the extraordinarily dynamic evolution of the medium of sculpture from the end of World War II to the present day. These pieces illustrate very clearly how the classical

concept and form of sculpture was set inmotion, how it became more abstract, moved closer to banal everyday objects, but was then reconstituted in a returnto the figurative tradition. www.kunstmuseumbasel.ch

Michael Landy, born in 1963, is one of the ”Young British Artists” who have been creating a furore since 1988. He presents installations in which fiction and real life merge in a disturbing liaison. He became known to a wider public in 2001 with ”Break Down”: In a shop in London, he drew up an inventory of all the objects that belonged to him at that point in time, to then destroy them in a structured process. Landy deals intensively with the function of art and artworks in our society. The Museum Tinguely is showing the first retrospective of this artist outside the UK.www.tinguely.ch
