Residents of the Village, in conjunction with Military Families United of Michigan and K9 Defender Fund, will again host a Packing Party to support our troops and military working dogs serving on the battlefield by sending them some small comforts of home.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? You may donate items to be packed in the care packages. You may volunteer to pack the care packages at the Packing Party. You may also donate $$ as it costs $15.00+ to mail each box or you may donate $$ toward the cost of a K-9 protective gear package.

The owner, agent, or occupant of land on which noxious weeds or grass are found growing shall destroy the weeds or grass before they reach seed bearing stage and prevent their re-growth, or shall prevent them from becoming a detriment to public health. Weeds not cut by May 1st of any given year may be cut by the Village, at which point the owner, agent or occupant of the property shall be charged with the cost of service. The Village may cut weeds or grass as many times as it is necessary and charge the cost to the owner, agent, or occupant of the land, and the Village shall have a lien against the land for the amount of the expense.

Please Note: No prior individual notification will be given.

Before you tackle that improvement project around the house or have a contractor do it for you, make certain you have the re-quired permits. Don’t assume your contractor has gotten a permit for you. Insist on seeing the permit and make sure it is properly posted.

A general rule of thumb is that a permit is required for anything except routine maintenance items like painting. The Village’s Code Enforcement Officer reports that people often fail to get permits for re-roofing, sheds, windows and decks. Avoid problems later on and obtain your permit before you begin.

If you are uncertain if you need a permit or not, call the Village Office.

THE PACKING PARTY WILL BE:

Saturday, October 15, 2016, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 2905 S. Commerce Road, Wolverine Lake, MI 48390 and is organized by Village Residents: Joann Sullivan 248-624-1706; Kristy

Nedrow 248-960-0244; Denny DeWitt, Vietnam

Veteran.

Very soon, the Packing Party flyer, listing all the possible donation items will be available on the Village Website, www.wolverinelake.com, and at Village Hall, 425 Glengary, Wolverine Lake, MI 48390.

Construction Ahead?

The Onwards and Upwards Community Enrichment Fund is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. This organization is dedicated to upholding and sustaining a community conscience focused on unity and service within the Village of Wolverine Lake by operating as a vehicle in which to provide Village residents with meaningful opportunities to band together to help where help is needed through established and growing volunteer groups as well as annual fundraisers.

Formerly known as the "Friends of the Fireworks", Onwards and Upwards is also a community group dedicated to organizing and upholding the Village of Wolverine Lake tradition of Tiki Night (the annual Wolverine Lake fireworks display) every year. Now, because of their 501(c)3 non-profit status, donations are tax deductible.

On Saturday, June 4, 2016 they will be hosting the 9th annual John Coxeter Classic Golf Outing and Dinner Party.

Sewer Connection

Upcoming Park and Recreation Events

If you were born after 1978

you must have a boater safety

certificate on your person to

operate a personal watercraft

such as a jet ski.

Sewers are available on all Lakefront streets (excluding Helmsford ) and major roads (Glengary, Benstein and S. Commerce) Please note: connection will be mandatory for homes where septic systems fail/need repair or if you build an addition greater than 100 square feet of livable space on these streets. Residents interested in joining the next Special Assessment District for Sewer Connection should contact Village Hall 248-624-1710.

Joining a Special Assessment District will allow you to pay most of the costs over 10 years on the Village tax bill.

Boater Safety Class

Keep our waterways safe! Register today for instruction in boater safety and receive your certificate the same day. Also, many insurance companies will discount your boat insurance. Pre-registration is required so stop by Village Hall with cash or check. The cost is $15 per person—Saturday, June 4th—Seating is limited—9 am to 4 pm—bring a snack, lunch and writing supplies.

Clean Boats—Clean Water

Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) is an extremely serious viral disease of fresh and saltwater fish, and we want to keep our lake clean of this devastating disease. There is no known cure for VHS so once it is in our lake, there is no turning back.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) maintains a boat disinfection station at the DNR boat launch. Boaters are strongly encouraged to spray their watercraft prior to launching. Also, make certain that your boat and trailer are free from any plants, sediment or aquatic life, plus make certain live wells are drained and unwanted bait is thrown in the trash.

Thank you for your participation!

TUESDAYS IN THE PARK

Village Council has implemented a permit procedure for Temporary Storage Structures, Construction Trailers and Dumpsters. Whenever you’re erecting a membrane structure or placing a Portable On-Demand Storage (PODS) unit, construction trailer or dumpster on your property a permit is required. There is no charge for the permit but Village Ordinance 1250.08 does stipulate where these items may be placed on the property and how long they may temporarily remain there. Permit applications are available at Village Hall or on the Village website.

With warm weather finally here, now is a perfect time to consider and plan the expansion of your lake front gardens in early spring. Excess nutrients from fertilizers, yard waste and pesticides from home lawn and garden activities can enter waterways in storm water runoff. Creating a garden buffer along the lake shore is not only beautiful but easy to do! It slows runoff, prevents erosion and provides added filtration to the lake. Utilize natural materials, such as wildflowers, grasses and shrubs, to stabilize shorelines. Native Michigan plants have extensive root systems that cut down watering needs, help infiltrate water back into the ground, minimize shoreline erosion and filter pollutants before entering the lake. ***Seawalls greatly reduce or eliminate riparian habitat. If you have an existing seawall, try supplementing the area in front of the structure with native aquatic vegetation to help restore lost aquatic habitat. They hold bottom sediments in place and protect the shoreline from the erosive forces of wind and ice action along with restoring aquatic habitat.

Camp fires are allowed in the Village of Wolverine Lake with the purchase of a Commerce Township fire permit, available at the fire station at 2401 Glengary Road.

Burning is not allowed: When the wind speed is above 10 mph., within 50 feet of any structure, on any road right of way or safety path. No flammable liquids can be used to start a fire. Fires shall be tended to at all times by a person 14 years of age or older. Extinguishment provisions must be readily available. Fire size must be no larger than 3x3x3 feet. Seasoned firewood only and a maximum of 5 hour burn time.

Fight the Bite

The Village is once again participating in the Oakland County Health Division’s program to protect our community from the West Nile Virus. Insect repellant containing deet as recommended by the Center for Disease Control along with educational materials explaining how you can help protect yourself and help control the mosquito population will be available. Staff will hand these out to Village residents (one per household) while the supply lasts. Michigan’s West Nile Virus hot line: 1-888-757-5717.

With the annual summer water recreation season upon us, the Village Water Board and Wolverine Lake Marine Police Patrol have issued the following reminders to everyone regarding our feathered neighbors who share our lake with us.

Please Do Not Feed the Water Fowl: Village Council enacted an ordinance banning the feeding or baiting of all waterfowl. Violators are subject to civil penalties. There are two primary reasons for the ban: first it is always a bad idea to teach wild animals to become dependent on humans and second, it is an even worse idea to attract migratory water fowl to the Village of Wolverine Lake. This not only can lead to confrontations (see the following caution regarding rogue water fowl) but adds to the lake and lawn pollution from the birds excrement.

Report Rogue Water Fowl Confrontations: Residents are encouraged to report to the police any confrontations with swans or other wild fowl that pose a threat to boaters and others using the lake, in order to compile a more accurate record of these occurrences and to help identify rogue birds that habitually threaten humans, please call County Dispatch at 248-624-1335 or Village Hall at 248-624-1710 with any complaints.

Report Abuse or Harassment of Water Fowl: Please report to the police any instances of people abusing, harassing or antagonizing the wildlife. Stopping this human aggression early will prevent a swan from becoming aggressive itself. Please call 248-624-1335 or 248-624-1710.

Keep informed of what is new in the Village. Visit the Village website home page and join the information e-mail list for current updates of news and activities. Click the envelope icon and follow the prompts.

What’s Happening?

In 2006 the Village adopted an ordinance to control the application of fertilizer on lakefront lawns, a further step in reducing the impact of runoff from applications of lawn fertilizer on turf containing phosphorous, nitrogen, and other minerals. This results in excessive and accelerated growth of algae and aquatic plants, which can negatively impact the lake’s eco-system.

The ordinance defines the acceptable types and amounts of fertilizers that may be used, the timing and frequency of applications, and sets a 15 foot buffer zone around the edge of the lake or wetland within which no fertilizer should be applied.

The ordinance also establishes a licensing requirement for commercial and institutional applicators working within the Village. For further information, contact the Village Offices at 248-624-1710.

To promote a safe environment on all pathways throughout the Village, the following guidelines are recommended: 1. Show courtesy and respect at all times to other pathway users. 2. Use the right side of the pathway. 3. Pass other users on the left. 4. Give audible warnings when passing other users. 5. Listen for audible warnings and allow faster users to pass freely. 6. Keep dogs on a leash (it’s the law) and clean up after them. 7. Bicyclists/Rollerbladers should proceed at a safe speed and be predictable. Go straight ahead! 8. Yield to wheelchairs no matter who has the

right of way. 9. Avoid putting yourself and others at risk!
