Spring 2019 News
Your Graduates - Class of 2019Congratulations! I can imagine your pride and excitement. I have been there! Just wanted to share a few tips for supporting your student during these last hectic weeks before graduation. As you plan to celebrate their accomplishments, please keep the following in mind:
Gently remind your student about the tasks to be completed
Your student may be so busy completing classes, getting ready for finals & projects, updating their resume, and making post-graduation plans that some graduation necessities might slip through the cracks. Please offer to help or set reminders to keep
their last few weeks organized.
Be ready to support your student
As expected, you may be full of sunny emotions— pride at your student’s accomplishments, joy at the
prospect of an end to tuition bills but we want to remind you that your student has an even wider range of
emotions to choose from. They may ricochet between:
• Fear or excitement about the future• Sadness about friends who are going their separate ways• A sense of accomplishment
• Relief at finishing his finals, projects, or essays
Student Finances$400 will be deposited directly or a check mailed to students for their return from Houston after cruise

Tips Continued:
To support your student:• Listen carefully - give them some space and don’t be surprised at a little volatility• Be sensitive to their current situation – pay close attention to their feelings• Don’t be shy about telling your student how proud you are of their accomplishments • Remind them of your confidence in their abilities -– whether their next steps are clear or uncertain,
knowing that you stand beside them is a huge comfort during this time of transition

Make dinner reservations early
Whether you plan to celebrate your student’s accomplishment with lunch or dinner, before or after the ceremony, make reservations as far in advance as possible. Here is the list of activities on campus and expected length of the ceremony on May 4th. 5/3/19: 1600 -1730 School Receptions & 1730 - 1800 Senior Award Ceremony5/4/19: 1000 Commissioning Ceremony & 1330 - 1530 Commencement CeremonyWhen making that reservation, please allow plenty of buffer time. Your student will want to congratulate fellow graduates, say goodbye to favorite professors, and pose for the paparazzi (plus think of all the foot and car traffic after the ceremony!).Restaurant recommendations: The Front Room at The Wharf; Mare Island Brewing Co. - Ferry Taproom; ; Zio Fraedo's of Vallejo; Gracie's Family BBQ; Urban Counter; Matsuri - Vallejo; Napoli Pizzeria & Italian Food
