groveland life

Established as mining camps in 1852, Groveland and the nearby town of Big

Oak Flat were once thriving California Gold Rush towns. After the decline in gold produc-tion, the historic town of Groveland made its mark offering hospitality to weary travelers coming to and from Yosemite National Park. Located only 26 miles from the northern entrance to the Park on Highway 120, today Groveland is the most convenient gateway for tourists coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Stockton, or Modesto.

Although Groveland boasts a population of approximately 3,000 full-time residents, this number often triples during the sum-mer months. Visitors are attracted to both the magnificent beauty of this area, as well as the many recreational opportunities offered nearby.

This quiet hilltop community has managed to retain much of its old west charm, and still boasts the oldest continuously operating sa-loon in California. Travelers enjoy playing golf at Pine Mountain Lake’s 18-hole golf course, taking in the sun at one of the numerous rec-reational lakes nearby, fishing, hiking, and of course sightseeing.

The Firefall in YosemiteAt 9:00 each evening in Camp Curry,

the crowd which had gathered for the nightly campfire program, would fall silent. A man would call out to the top of Glacier Point “Let the Fire Fall!” A faint reply could be heard from the top of the mountain. Then a great bonfire of red fir bark would be pushed evenly over the edge of the cliff, appearing to

the onlookers below as a glowing waterfall of sparks and fire.

The spectacle was the Yosemite Fire Fall, a nightly tradition in Yo-semite National Park for some 88 years. When we were trying to come up with a clev-er name for our new

coffee roasting adventure, we reached out to the town and had a contest to see who could come up with the best name.

Firefall Roasting Company is the Last Cof-fee Shop before Yosemite. Mention that you read about them in Discover Groveland Mag-azine and they’ll give you 10% OFF your or-der for just saying so!

Tuolumne River Rafting Near Yosemite:

Sierra Mac River Trips

River rafting one of the two stretches of the Tuolumne River flowing from

the northwest mountain ranges of Yosem-ite National Park near HWY 120, takes you on an adventure journey that you will never forget.

Rafting awesome one-day trips on the class V whitewater 9 mile Cherry Creek/Upper Tuolumne ride, is on one of the most

challenging and demanding rapid thrills in North America.

The second popular option is to raft the 18 mile, class IV whitewater, tradition-al Main Tuolumne River run. Beginner and intermediate whitewater enthusiasts from around the world have one, two or three day trips with pristine riverside camping opportunities. Explore the sites that the native American Me-Wuk Indians ground acorns, hunted deer and swam in warm side canyon pools. Locally owned and op-

Rainbow Pool& Carlon Falls

On your way to or from Yosem-ite National Park along Highway 120 you’ll find Rainbow Pools as

it crosses over the South Fork Tuolumne River bridge at just about the half-way point from Groveland, 13.5 miles.

When traveling east on the highway you’ll pass the View Point Rim of the World park-ing area above the Tuolumne River canyon. About 1.5 miles further east, you’ll see the highway making a sweeping turn into a bridge overpass. The entrance is on the right as you start to cross the bridge. There is a sign for

Rainbow Pools, but if you miss it, drive across the bridge until you see the turnoff for Cher-ry Lake and then turn around there.

In the days of stagecoach transport the pools were a scheduled stop and picnic area. John Cox was a toll collector on the road for about 20 years until tolls were eliminated in 1915.

Cox1, a former Confederate soldier, had built a cabin on the site of the rocks above the falls from which he took a daily ‘bath-ing’ plunge. Mrs. Nellie Bartlett and her brother William Wilson leased the cabin and site in 1924. They continued to add buildings to the site until it became the Fall Inn, which was built over the falls where the covered bridge had been. They later renamed it the Cliff House. It was a popu-lar resort well into the 1930s. It burned to the bedrock in 1939. The property was rebuilt and expanded to include modern motel cabins. Another fire destroyed the Cliff House in 1958 and it was never re-built.

Rainbow Pools exists today, as before, as a popular swimming hole inviting lo-cals and travelers during the summer months, to take a cooling dip or adven-turous plunge. You can picnic above in the designated area or day camp by the Pools edge.

You can see the occasional diver make the sign of the cross just before they take their ‘leap of faith’ plunge in the deep wa-ters below the cliffs. It does take an adven-turous sort but there seem to be plenty of brave plungers on any given day. It’s fun
