ADULT BASIC EDUCATION

We offer free High School Equivalency (HSE) preparedness classes (formerly GED classes) at locations throughout Elkhart county. For those with computer and Internet access we also offer free distance learning classes.

*HSE replaces the GED and is recognized by the State of Indiana.

Register January through April

Classes are FREE, requirements are: -Multi-day orientation -Excellent attendance -Valid photo ID -Resident of Indiana

Adult Basic Education orientation sessions are available in Elkhart and Goshen and will follow the schedule as outlined below. Students must register in advance.

Students must attend each day of their scheduled orientation session. Elkhart orientations are for Elkhart classes only and Goshen orientations are for Goshen classes.

Students must present state issued ID and social security card on the first day of orientation. Students without the required identification will not be allowed to participate in that week’s orientation and will need to reschedule. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Students under 18 MUST present the appropriate completed exit interview paperwork no later than the first day of orientation. Students without the appropriate paperwork will not be allowed to participate in that week’s orientation and will need to reschedule. NO EXCEPTIONS. Exit interview packets are available at the Community Education office.

Students should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of orientation. Students will not be allowed into orientation after the start time.

Students are expected to dress appropriately (business casual please).

Please call in advance to reserve your seat for Orientation. Dates are subject to change.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

This program offers students an opportunity to learn the English language at no cost through Elkhart Community Schools at 3 locations throughout Elkhart county. Call 574-262-5678 to register for an ESL Orientation located in either Elkhart or Goshen.

PARAPROFESSIONAL STUDY CLASS

This study class is aligned to the PRAXIS Paraprofessional Assessment. The class will cover all three of the assessment categories; reading, mathematics, and writing. If you are thinking of a career in education, this class is for you.

SKILL BRUSH UP

Need assistance in achieving your goals? Spend time in class or with on-line instruction to enhance your math, writing, and reading skills. This study class is designed to meet local industry educational needs.

ACCUPLACER

These exams provides both college course placement scores as well as diagnostic scores that can be used to “drill down” and identify students’ strengths and specific areas of need.

HSE READINESS ASSESSMENT

Examinees receive a score in the form of a percentage that indicates the likelihood of passing the TASC test. In addition, the Readiness Assessment provides feedback on areas of weakness, allowing examinees to focus their efforts as they prepare for the test.

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE, formerly GED)

The Indiana HSE test offers adults an opportunity to earn a nationally accepted high school credential. Be sure to call prior to your registration visit for more information regarding eligibility requirements (such as age and residency).

END OF COURSE ASSESSMENT (ECA)

This test is available to those individuals who have met all other graduation requirements and need to take their End of Course Assessment. In person registration with current photo ID is required a minimum 72 hours before the testing session begins.

HVACR YEAR I 2nd SEMESTER

Learn the different types of HVACR systems and components as well as being introduced to basic electricity, thermodynamics, the refrigeration cycle, system maintenance, installation and repair methods, troubleshooting, and customer service.

HVACR YEAR III & IV 2nd SEMESTER

With a building block approach that ensures readers comprehend simpler concepts before moving on to more complex information, this is the perfect resource for learning and applying advanced HVACR concepts. Students will review the refrigeration cycle in comfort conditioning and progress to electrical schematics, maintenance, geothermal heat pumps, and troubleshooting. This content is in conjunction with ACCA, PHCC, and RSES. This course encourages you to apply information as you learn it.

HVACR YEAR II 2nd SEMESTER

HVACR 201 continues to build upon the basics of the trade. We begin with simpler HVACR concepts and progress into complex theories and skills. The class advances to deal with topics in electrical, heating and motors. Topics are presented alongside practical industry-relevant examples, allowing both entry-level technicians and 2nd year apprentices to easily learn and apply key HVACR concepts.

HEATING, VENTILATING, AIR CONDITIONING, REFRIGERATION

This is a 3 year program. Each year is divided into 2 semesters. Registration is required each semester. At the end of each year, an Adult Continuing Education certificate will be presented to students who have satisfactorily completed both semesters. These classes offer preparation for a career in HVACR through theory and hands on experience.

ADVANCED WELDING (CLASS II)

Students will learn advanced fundamentals of 1G, 2F, 3G, 3F, 4G and 4F positions. Metal groups include Low Carbon Steel and Aluminum Alloys. Advanced welding in SMAW, PAC, OAC/W, FCAW, GMAW-S, Spray and GTAW welding with interpreting blueprints may make students ready for entry level welding positions. Students must arrive to class on time and remain on task. Time management skills are a must. Employability skills, Integrated Mathematics and English are also part of the welding curriculum. Students are required to provide safety glasses, protective clothing (long sleeve shirt, long pants, close toe shoes or boots) and welding gloves. Prerequisite: Basic Welding.

BASIC WELDING (CLASS I)

Students learn basic fundamentals of 1G, 2G, 1F and 2 F positions. You will be introduced to stick arc welding, GTAW (TIG), GMAW-S and Spray (MIG), FCAU, Oxy-Acetylene cutting/welding (OAW)/brazing and plasma arc cutting (PAC). You will also learn the difference in structure and cosmetic welds. The curriculum includes proper use of hand tools, power tools and other shop equipment. Students will be taught different welding techniques and how to weld Low Carbon Steel and Aluminum Alloys, read blueprints and interpret weld symbols. Students must arrive to class on time and remain on task. Time management skills are a must. Employability skills, Integrated Mathematics and English are also part of the welding curriculum. AWS Certification*

The American Welders Society (AWS) certification preparation class covers skills, processes and practices for entry-level welders. Includes instruction in arc welding, resistance welding, brazing and soldering, cutting, high-energy beam welding and cutting, solid state welding, ferrous and non-ferrous materials, oxidation-reduction reactions, welding metallurgy, welding processes and heat treating, structural design, safety, and applicable codes and standards. AWS certification is earned upon successful completion of the course and the passing of the AWS exam.

AUTOCAD

Attain drawing experience for the mechanical, architectural and electronic industries. Students are guided through hands-on AutoCAD training in use of Basic CAD equipment; drawing geometric shapes; working with drawing files; introduction to 3-D drawings; & dimensional drawings. Upon conclusion, students will be prepared for 3-D modeling and drawing.

AUTOCAD 3-D MODELING

Learn 3-dimensional drawing concepts, create and edit wire-frame, surface and solid models. Review: solid model creation from regions, extruding, revolving; user coordinate systems; solid model editing of faces, bodies and edges using grips, align, rotate, mirror and array; viewing, shading and displaying models. Prerequisite: AutoCAD 2014 or equivalent work experience.

COMPUTER BASICS BOOT CAMP

Get up to speed on the basics of operating a computer. Class will cover the beginnings of keyboarding and mouse dexterity as well as the foundation of desktop and Internet navigation. Students will leave boot camp with a better understanding of the Windows operating system, file navigation, and online tools to help further their digital education.

After successful completion of an assessment at the end of the session, a certificate will be issued.

MICROSOFT EXCEL - BASIC

Prerequisites: Must have a basic understanding of computers such as keyboarding, mouse dexterity, and desktop navigation. Class covers the basics of Microsoft Excel from menu functions to the basics of spreadsheet creation. This is a study class for the MOS Word 2016: Core Document Creation, Collaboration and Communication exam number 77-725. This class will cover; the creation, formatting, and management of documents, tables and lists, inserting graphics, and managing references. Prerequisite: must have good computer skills and a solid basic understanding of Microsoft Word.

EKG/ECG TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION

Gain knowledge in the basic anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulatory system. Students will be able to identify EKG waveforms interval, segments and complexes and become proficient with EKG techniques and interpretations. Hands on practice with equipment and learn placement of leads for 12-lead EKG, Holter monitor, tress testing and contraindications.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - EMT*

Develop knowledge and skills needed for the first level of emergency medical responder able to provide emergency care in the patient compartment of an ambulance. Once successfully completing the course students are eligible to sit for the State of Indiana written and practical exams.

CERTIFIED NURSES ASSISTANT - CNA*

Our CNA course consists of a 30+ hours of classroom instruction and 75+ hours of clinical instruction in a long-term care facility. A candidate must pass a required reading evaluation the first week of class to continue the course. State Certification consists of both written and skills test. Background check and TB test must be completed in order to attend class.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE - CDA*

Our CDA class is the first step of career advancement in Early Childhood Education careers. Students will study the ins and outs of how children move from one developmental stage to the next and how a caregiver can help them move through these stages successfully.
