Dear Friends,

Ten years ago, I was fortunate to go to Paris with my mom.

While our week included breathtaking art and world renowned

museums, we still agree the highlight was a quiet afternoon

having tea with George Whitman, owner of the historic

bookstore Shakespeare and Company. The shop, originally

opened by Sylvia Beach in 1919, soon became a haunt for

artists such as James Joyce, Ernest Hemmingway, Gertrude

Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and many other literary icons. In

1941, it was forced to close by Nazi soldiers. It was eventually

reopened by Mr. Whitman in the late 1950’s. On its well-worn

steps are painted three simple words: “Live for Humanity.” George was well known for his

support of down-and-out artists, providing typewriters and sleeping pads in the nooks and

crannies among the books where artists could write and sleep in exchange for a few hours

of work. He claimed the shop was really a utopian society masquerading as a bookstore.

Today, I am grateful to be part of an organization like White Bear Center for the Arts that

stands behind the importance of a safe and inclusive community, built on genuine respect for

the creative, social, and cultural spirit of each individual. While WBCA may not yet be Utopia

(or providing places to sleep) we see how people forge new relationships when they feel safe

and supported, encouraged by the creative spirit of another. Little by little, one by one, art

transforms us. Stories expose our humanity. It’s what a friend calls the drip method: a series

of small actions that over time create great change. It’s not a singular effort that creates

a safe, inclusive community; it’s a collective.

This spring WBCA hosts several free art experiences, sharing stories and art that highlight

our diversity. In partnership with Center for Hmong Arts and Talent we’re offering a series of

films by Hmong filmmakers. North Starz Children’s Theater will perform: “I Never Saw Another

Butterfly,” the heartbreaking and hope-filled story of Jewish children interned in Terezin

concentration camp during World War II. In April, we welcome the return of Minneapolis

Guitar Quartet, and in May, WBCA shines the spotlight on young adults through their visual

art and writing.

AND! We’re offering over 200 classes that will blow your mind. Just look inside.

So, I hope you’ll join us. Utopia needs you.

-Suzi Hudson, Executive Director

I Never Saw Another Butterfly Nothern Starz Children’s Theatre CompanyOver 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin concentration camp, and only about a hundred were still alive when it was liberated at the end of the war. These few then went back to the scattered pieces of their lives, their homes and families. Raja Englanderova lived through it all at Terezin; teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little reason for hope. This play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, is her story. It is history as much as any play can be history, showing the best and the worst of which the human heart is capable.

Meet at Northrop or notify WBCA if you are interested in setting up a carpool. Based in the Basque coastal resort town of Biarritz in Southern France, Artistic Director Thierry Malandain has developed a very personal approach to dance that is rooted in classical ballet with a contemporary, full-bodied style. His company of 22 gorgeous dancers makes their Minnesota debut with an ethereal vision of Beauty and the Beast—unlike any other you have seen before. Revealing the humanity at the core of this well-known fairy tale, Malandain says, “I am searching for a dance that not only leaves traces of pleasure, but also revives the essence of the sacred as an answer to the difficulty of being.” With ingenious stagecraft, elegant costumes, and a romantic score drawn from Tchaikovsky’s symphonies, this unique, 70-minute version sweeps us toward an uplifting finale where goodness and love conquer fear and evil. Beginning CalligraphyPat BarrettLearning calligraphy is similar to learning any art form. It involves line, shape, space, texture, color, and movement. In calligraphy there are basic rules and techniques meant to help the learning process. In this class our focus will be on learning the Italic minuscule script (lower case letters). Students should be able to apply these rules and techniques to learning other calligraphic scripts. The focus of the first class will be on learning the basics such as tools, supplies, terms, and any other basic information necessary to start putting pen to paper. The focus of the following two classes will be on learning the structure of each letter within the Italic lower case alphabet, spacing, and a bit on layout, as well as individual guidance and answering questions. Please bring to the first class: Paper and pencil for note taking. CLAYThe Path of Wood Firing: WorkshopJD Jorgenson Experience an extensive wood firing workshop, which includes discussions and considerations for firing wood kilns. Topics to be covered range from glazing and loading to the interactions between fire and form. Teaching artist JD Jorgenson will discuss different styles of wood kilns, wood-fire philosophy, and clay bodies and glazes appropriate for wood firing. White Bear Center for the Arts is excited to continue the partnership with JD Jorgenson and his studio to wood fire in St. Joseph, MN, about an hour and half northwest of White Bear Lake. Students will meet 7 times at White Bear Center for the Arts for discussions and open studio time. Later, they will meet in St. Joseph for 3-4 days to load and fire one of the wood burning kilns to temperatures between cone 6 and cone 10. We will meet one final time to unload the kiln. This workshop is designed for intermediate through advanced handbuilders and wheel-throwers. No wood firing experience necessary. Materials are included. Paella ValencianaPeggy DoranThe Paella is the pan used to cook this legendary dish, and Valenciana refers to the region of Spain on the shores of the Mediterranean where it originated. It is typically cooked outdoors in the countryside on a dry wood fire. The Paella must be set at a suitable height to be surrounded by flames during the first part of the cooking, and the fire must be kept burning at the correct strength. Generally, good Paella depends not so much on the quality of the ingredients as on combining all the components in the correct proportions. The five basic elements - oil, water, rice, heat, and cooking receptacle - need be balanced with an almost mathematical precision. The experience and personal touch of whoever is in charge of the cooking are also of utmost importance. The preparation of Paella in the countryside is a ritualistic, festive occasion which can sometimes turn into a gastronomic debate! The relaxed, lighthearted atmosphere is punctuated with jokes and comments on the progress of the food. The experience culminates when the Paella is deemed ready, removed from the fire and carried to the table. Paella Valenciana has Bomba rice, rabbit or pork, green beans, chicken, snails, tomatoes, paprika, and saffron. Peggy’s version of Paella Valenciana will use seafood, pork, chicken, beans, chorizo, and Bomba rice. That’s a mouthful! Bring an apron to class.

Build a Portable Brick OvenDavid S. CargoJoin award-winning baker David S. Cargo to learn how to build a portable stacked-brick oven. The oven is built from stacked bricks that are not mortared together and can be moved after the oven is built. Learn how to build a small oven by yourself and go from bare ground to cooking pizza in about 4 hours. Class discussion covers some of the differences between these portable brick ovens and more familiar designs such as Alan Scott ovens, Forno Bravo Pompeii ovens, and cob ovens such as those made popular by Kiko Denzer. The class covers siting the oven, preparing the ground for the oven, and then the practical techniques for construction. Everyone will get a handout with plans for three different sizes of ovens, their bills of materials, and recipes for use with the oven. The oven is built to demonstrate the techniques used, and the plans that show how the ovens go together will be read. While the fire is heating the oven up, David demonstrates how to make dough for pizza, bread, naan, and pita bread. Later in the afternoon, the dough is formed into the proper shapes for baking, and some dough is formed for a loaf of bread. Finally, the pita bread, naan, and pizzas are baked (and eaten) and then the loaf of bread goes into the oven. Bring from home: a lunch for an hour break at noon, plus hat, gloves, note-taking materials and sturdy shoes (in case of falling bricks).

A Sketchy Approach to Understanding PerspectiveJames NuttPerspective is a challenge for everyone and has a steep learning curve, but with enough understanding and practice it becomes intuitive and even fun. As an architect and an artist, James is in a position to help other artists create work that “feels right” (or at least closer to right). This class series is intended to be a fun and intuitive way to get “close enough” with your sketching to feel right while still keeping things loose. Each class will start with an overview of perspective basics but then dive separately into 1, 2, and 3 point perspective. Using rubber bands and string, you will learn to construct the various perspectives, finding vanishing points, finding centers, rough measuring, placing people, etc. Line quality, line weight, and creating depth will also be discussed in each class. You are encouraged to take all three classes, but any can be taken if you feel comfortable with the overall basics of perspective.* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list.

SAORI Weaving with “Bloom” The Ladies of “Bloom” This class is an especially unique and special opportunity to learn SAORI weaving from the 8 ladies who make up “Bloom.” While these ladies happen to have developmental disabilities they have already had two nearly sold out shows at Homewood Studios in Minneapolis as well as gaining teaching experience through workshops held during their shows. Now, “Bloom” has made their home within the White Bear Center for the Arts community. Be ready to open your mind to the beauty of imperfection within SAORI weaving and a new way of being taught.SAORI is very different from traditional weaving, placing more importance on free expression and creativity than on technical skills or the regularity of the woven cloth. This is a therapeutic/healing weaving technique. SAORI weaving celebrates the unintentional beauty resulting from our natural creativity and does not try to imitate machine-made products. Irregular selvages and accidental skips of thread add to the un-programmed beauty of SAORI cloths. In this class we will relax, enjoy, explore, and develop positive thinking through weaving. Enjoy weaving with many colors, textures and utilizing the inherent sense of exploration we all possess! The looms will be set up ahead of time, so you can start weaving right away. You can take home whatever length you weave. You are welcome to bring materials from home that you would like to use for your project such as home spun yarn or strips of fabric. Be ready to follow your heart and feel like you are 5 years old again!

Painting with EncausticSylvia BensonJoin in on a new endeavor of working with hot beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening agent and pigments of many colors. It is called encaustic, an ancient art form dating back to the Greeks, which was revived by Jasper Johns and has gained popularity since the 90s. This medium is exciting because of its flexibility and versatility. Wax can be moved with a hot air gun, textured with tools, imbedded with beautiful paper, and turned into a collage. Step-by-step instruction and individual attention will help you develop your painting in this wonderful medium. $20 material fee covers all materials to make one painting; students who wish to make more can buy extra materials for an additional fee.

Late Winter Landscapes in WatercolorJudy BlainYou know those early, misty mornings when the sun is low and you can’t see the horizon? The snow has turned violet or pale blue, and there are few whites or blacks... well, that’s what this class will be painting. This actually happens at different times of the day, so Google some photos for early mornings or late afternoons when the snow turns orange. We will paint mostly in the middle values which I will demonstrate. Be sure to bring ultramarine blue, and some Holbein’s Lavender if you can. Also bring 2 or 3 half sheets of 140# cold-pressed Arches watercolor paper and some Gouache opaque watercolors if you have them. Bring a lunch as well.

Get yourself a new pink or purple for the occasion, and add a new green to the mix. Bring Arches cold-pressed paper, and maybe a sheet of Yupo. Go onto Pinterest.com and see what photos you can bring. Judy will have photos as well. Demonstrations? Of course!

Sylvia will describe in detail the materials used in watercolor paintings and how the water and pigment work together on the paper. The class also involves learning brush techniques, mixing colors, graying colors or knocking down the intensity, methods for producing textures, doing value studies, and discussing what makes a good composition. Use a viewfinder to choose an eye-catching composition that can be painted in a larger abstract version, illustrating high, medium, and low key value. Finally, we will find inspiration in the labyrinth outside where we’ll create a watercolor mandala. Curious? Join us to experience, enjoy, and relax while learning.

Stone SculptureScott MalcolmStone sculpture is one of the oldest and most fundamental vehicles for human expression. From Stonehenge to Michelangelo’s David, to the soft sensual forms of Henry Moore, stone has been used by men and women to express the mysteries of the human experience reaching back to long before recorded human history. This Stone Sculpture open studio will be held indoors using hand tools on the “soft” stone of your choice. We welcome experienced sculptors who desire to work in community as well as beginners. Small pieces of stone and rudimentary tools along with basic use and safety instruction will be provided to beginners free of charge. Returning students will have the opportunity to build their own custom work table and continue working and developing stone projects while beginning to accumulate their own tools. Small pieces of high quality alabaster will be offered for sale to interested students. Class is open to 6 new students; all returning students are welcome.

White Bear Center for the Arts’ DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

To ensure an atmosphere of joy and wonder for the White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) and

that its programming is accessible to all members of the community, WBCA must be a culturally

responsive center that reflects the diversity of our local area.

WBCA believes that diversity, inclusion and equity are essential to fulfilling our mission to provide

a gateway to diverse arts experiences for all people in the Northeastern metro suburban area who

wish to participate. WBCA embraces differences and commonalities across race, gender, ethnicity,

sexual orientation, mental & physical ability, religion, age, & social economic class.

We believe that in order to build a more diverse membership, we must work to identify barriers

and commit to removing these limitations.

We commit to expanding our awareness about, and representation in, the greater diverse arts

experience and strive to make art an intrinsic part of everyday life.

To meaningfully and measurably foster a culture of inclusion we will focus on:

1) Building our cultural capacity through education, cultural training, and intentional

engagement with diverse artists and audiences;

2) Providing accessible programs of relevance by engaging diverse artists in planning

and delivery of programs at WBCA.

3) Seeking opportunities that expand outreach to diverse populations in our community.

WBCA stands behind the importance of long-term sustainable relationships built on genuine

respect for the creative, social and cultural spirit of each individual. This initiative will be the

bedrock for all action and planning done by the Board and Staff at White Bear Center for the Arts.
