INDIAN SUMMERS: A Drama in the Decline of the British Raj

The British resolutely held on to their power in India despite widespread mistrust and nationalist agitation throughout the 1930s. The political impasse that certain Indo-British leaders had subsequently ran into led to the ultimate demise of the Raj, ensuring the inevitable partition of the land into two mutually hostile nations of India and Pakistan in 1947. Produced by Channel 4 (UK) in

alliance with the PBS, the enthralling cinematography and the riveting performance of the characters in Indian Summers (Season I) unravel the prolonged discussion on the devolution of power and the tangled web of relationship that existed between the imperial Sahibs and their native subordinates, who retreated annually to Simla, a summer sanctuary at the Himalayan foothills. Each class period will consist of watching the DVD, reading short socio-historical articles and discussing their socio-historical and political significance. NOTE: This course runs for 10 weeks with a registration cost of $60.

Instructor: John Paul is a professor of history at Fitchburg State University and holds a Master of Arts and Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he specialized in South Asian History and Culture. KNITTING ARAN PATTERNS

Let’s explore knitting beautiful patterns used in Irish sweaters, without committing to that sweater project. By working through a variety of cable patterns in easy to work squares, we can understand how they are worked one at a time, and

combine them into a blanket or pillow project. We will work with various colors and gauges to gain confidence in a variety of designs. If participants are interested in combining their samples we may donate a finished product to a charity to be decided during class. Students only need some basic knitting skills including casting on, knitting, purling, casting off. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Some samples of yarn and needles will be available to use, but students should bring their own materials after the project is defined in the first class.

Instructor: Sara Campbell has been researching her own roots for over 25 years. She has taught non-credit classes in genealogy at Greenfield and Holyoke Community Colleges and lectured to many regional societies including Central Mass. Genealogical Society, Mass. INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF DANCE

This discussion/lecture course is intended as an introduction to a very large subject. The information is an overview, not a comprehensive study of world dance. Students acquire knowledge of and build understanding about human diversity—differences and commonalities—through dance. Course topics will include five dance forms: Tribal/Religious, Social, Court/Ballet, Modern, and Theatrical. We will watch

videos of artist performances of duets, solos, and groups and then interpret and talk about the stories, legends and myths that the dance tells of and passes on to each generation.

Instructor: Judith Lindstedt. For complete bio, see Stretch & Tone, Session III, Page 3.

deeds, historic maps and other often overlooked records. Skeletons in the closet? Let’s make them dance! Students should have a basic knowledge of computers and internet searching.

BREATHE YOUR WAY INTO LIFE ALTERING EXPERIENCES

Are you breathing too fast or do you hold your breath? Are you a chest or mouth breather? If so, your body is in a continuous mode of nervous anxiety. Consequently, your mind is not in control. What we think and feel impact how we breathe.

Feeling frightened depressed, or hurt; dealing with chronic pain with no control over the situation are examples of how our Breath is out of sync with our emotional/mental body. Come, breathe, slow and deep, from the diaphragm. Come, learn how powerful your diaphragm is; experience body/mind/spirit comfort as you involve yourself in the power of your Breath/Sound. RECOMMENDED BOOKS: The Healing Power of the Breath by Dr. Richard Brown, MD and Patricia Gerbarg, MD.

Instructor: Carol Pedigree is a graduate of Smith College, Northampton, MA. After personal, extensive experimentation and research with conscious breathing and inner sound, she has discovered ways to access and relieve physical pain, as well as change unhealthy thought patterns.

ALFA REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

REGISTRATION FORM: Providing all contact information is helpful. It makes for easy contact if questions come up about your registration form and may be important in the event of an emergency.

Please complete one registration form for each person taking classes. Two forms are included in this brochure. If you need additional registration forms, please visit our website to download and print one (www.fitchburgstate.edu/alfa).

Registrations must be MAILED. NO phone/hand-delivered registrations accepted.

Be sure to include a check made payable to Fitchburg State, or provide your credit card information on the registration form. ALFA classes are $30 each, although some are free and will be marked FREE in the brochure (please note that some classes also have an additional materials fee (cash only) and is due at the first class.

• Any incomplete component may delay the processing of the registration form.

• Payments are not refundable/transferable to other classes unless a class is canceled.

• Classes are free for those who are 90 or above. If over 90, please send verification of age with your registration form.

• Please make a copy of the completed registration form for personal records.

• All registrations are processed in the order in which they are received.

ENROLLMENT: Prompt return of forms will facilitate early processing and improve the chances of getting preferred classes. Due to space limitations and instructor requests, class size varies. It is important to list alternatives in the event that first choices are not available. If no alternatives are listed it will be assumed that none are desired.

CONFIRMATION/PARKING: Once a registration has been received and processed you will receive a confirmation and Temporary Parking Permit Application with a parking hang-tag. Please bring your completed permit application to your first class, and be sure to hang your tag from your rear-view mirror facing out to avoid being ticketed by Campus Police. For additional campus parking and shuttle information, please visit our website at fitchburgstate.edu/alfa

ALFA TRIPS: Some trips include a lunch at the venue. Please be sure to indicate your lunch choice on the registration form if lunch is included.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT PRESENTATIONS: Although Food for Thought presentations are free and open to the public, if you are planning on attending, please be sure to check it off on the registration form so that we know how many people to plan for.

LOCATION OF COURSES: Unless otherwise specified, ALFA classes are held on the Fitchburg State University Campus. We do our best to schedule courses in the C-Wing of the McKay Campus School at Fitchburg State University, 67 Rindge Road, Fitchburg, MA. Occasionally, they will be held on the Main Campus in buildings, such as: Hammond Hall, Antonucci Science complex, or Conlon Hall.

ALFA INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: When Fitchburg State University cancels classes or has a delay, ALFA will not hold classes on or off campus on that day.
