INTRODUcTIONsince 2013 utrecht has had a new international festival, a continuation of springdance and festival a/d Werf: sPriNg. We are not looking back at our roots in nostalgia but we are proudly taking our history with us as we journey towards the future. We are inviting you to join us on this journey!

The future is an unknown entity by its very nature, but it is not something we should fear. Abraham Lincoln said: ‘The best way to predict your future is to create it’. This is what our choreographers and theatre makers are doing, and it is what we as a festival are doing. We are creating MORE FuTuRE. Every show at sPRING is an adventure, a journey into the future of theatre and dance, and that of society.

SPRING is off ering you a French Focus programme; several international co-productions featuring young artists from the Netherlands and elsewhere; a range of new performances by artists from utrecht; sPRING Academy for young artists and students, and plenty of opportunities to meet the makers and each other in our festival heart. I hope you will be able to choose from all of the above, and that you will come up with some exciting combinations. These will allow you to experience the future of performing arts the way we envisage it, they are the true sPRING experience. The #hashtags in this brochure can help you choose, or you can use the Guide Me on our website.

On behalf of the entire sPRING team I would like to welcome you to sPRING. Welcome to the future, MORE FUTURE!

Pascal Rambert & Yves Godin fr Memento Mori

thu 15 & fri 16 MaY: 21.00 (50 MiN) stadsschouWBurg utrEcht (dE-Zaal) // € 20 (ONLINE)

In the beginning there is darkness, complete darkness. This is how Memento Mori starts. You can’t see your hand in front of your face, literally. No space, no theatre, no world. What was familiar seconds ago, is now without shape or contour. Is there someone sitting next to you? Then, ‘something’ appears. Or does it? Perhaps you’re fooling yourself, perhaps you just want to see something of ‘the world’ again. But there are sounds, too. Then yes, a movement. A world seems to be unfolding, with people, naked people. And, is this fruit?! Pascal Rambert is one of the most radical artists in French theatre and dance. The ingenious lighting was designed by Yves Godin. Memento Mori is about the moment just before the next movement, but it is also about death and the birth of a new world. It is a visual and visceral experience, dark, yet with a light sense of humour.

Ant Hampton gB Lest We see Where We Are

Lest We See Where We Are is a journey into the past as well as into the future. In a café on domplein you’re sitting at the window with a photo album in front of you. A voice inside your head(phones) is drawing you into the past. Because, what do we know about a hundred, two hundred, or even five hundred years ago? What did our surroundings look like? how would the people living then see us? And then you are asked to get up and walk towards the Dom. A different voice starts talking to you. One from the future?! Or is it someone who can see you now? And what is this voice telling you about the future? do you believe what you are hearing? What do you want to believe? By making clever use of ingenious stereo recordings and a simple boombox, Ant hampton creates a stunningly visceral experience inspired by the city of utrecht.

Julian Hetzel Nl / dE still (The Economy of Waiting)

have you ever considered making money by doing nothing? It’s what some people seem to do; night porters, security people, even beggars. Of course they are ‘doing something’, but they are not visibly being active or productive. What they are really doing, is waiting. Waiting is a provocation in our society today, in which hard graft, high productivity and unbridled ambition have been elevated to the highest level of virtue. Waiting means wasting time; it’s a no-man’s land between thought and action. A visit to performance installation Still (The Economy of Waiting) is no such thing! In a series of cargo containers in and around Janskerkhof you will have a personal encounter in a fictional parallel universe. Surrounded by the bustling city you will find peace. SPRING believes that the festival DNA is made up of more than just putting talent on the bill; it’s also about encouraging and facilitating talent development. Like choreographer Jan Martens, Julian Hetzel is working on a two-year development programme with SPRING.

Dries Verhoeven Nl de uitvaart

come and pay your respects in utrecht’s most beautiful church, say goodbye to something we may have lost. Because, if we are to believe those who despair of our civilization, and some of our politicians, whole areas in our society are about to collapse. dries Verhoeven is making the bad tidings tangible by dedicating ten dramatized funeral masses to ideas, values, or parts of our society that have been lost. Each day of the festival you can come to the st. Willibrord church to commemorate the ‘deceased’ and say goodbye. When the funeral bells stop tolling, Verhoeven will remember the deceased in a funeral mass, and reflect on the role the dearly departed performed in our lives. he asks us: did we unwittingly let something slip? could we have prevented this loss? Or is our loss a mercy of sorts? After mass you will leave the church to accompany the ‘dead’ to his final resting place. After De uitvaart (The Funeral) coffee and cake will be served and visitors can offer their condolences.

Florentina Holzinger & Vincent Riebeek Nl / at Wellness

The perfect symbiosis of a healthy body and a healthy mind: it is the ultimate aim of these five performers. They are trying to achieve nothing short of their own versions of Miss or Mister universe. Their training schedule: militaristic cross-fitness sessions to develop the perfect muscle tone all over, alternated with in-depth psychotherapy and meditation sessions. Florentina holzinger and Vincent Riebeek have become known for their radical physicality and explicit performances. For Wellness they have drawn inspiration from glossy magazines, beauty contests and the world of transvestism. They have invited three performers to join them for this show, including Renée copraij who danced with Jan Fabre for many years. In Wellness she plays the great yoga mistress who takes the others on a path to leave their fears behind. The path that will lead them to the ultimate balance and happiness.Love it, or hate it!

Utrecht Connection Nl Expodium & dutch Game Garden and more

sPRING is bringing the world to utrecht and presenting utrecht to the world. Alongside the many international shows, the festival will also present a substantial number of shows made in utrecht. The city is a rich breeding ground. It is teeming with diverse and refreshing initiatives by young creatives involved in other forms of art besides the performing arts. sPRING has asked two incubator spaces from utrecht to rise to the challenge of connecting their own disciplines with those in the performing arts.

On Saturday 17 May the urban think tank Expodium is curating a programme of lectures, performances and music based on urban research in utrecht. The programme will be centred on the theme of sPRING, More Future!

On Sunday 18 May a number of businesses which operate under the roof of dutch Game Garden will demonstrate their latest developments in gaming. Game Oven studios, for instance, will be launching a dance app developed in collaboration with het Nationale Ballet.

Kviss búmm bang is A walk on the lost highway

Who are you? The Icelandic collective Kviss búmm bang is sending you on an ethnic self-research. Fitted out with a small kit, a map of the city centre and a few Euros you will set out alone. crossing the centre of utrecht you will stumble upon pieces of yourself in all kinds of unexpected corners and meeting places. A walk on the lost highway is a personal journey during which you may find out that you belong to some minority you had never even heard of, let alone considered. And who decides what a minority is? Kviss búmm bang asks who falls within the norm and who ends up being an outsider. Lose yourself!

Lotte van den Berg Nl cinema Imaginaire

Looking, directing your gaze, seeing what has gone unnoticed and scrutinizing your own way of seeing things. This is what’s at stake in Cinema Imaginaire. The spectators create their own show. Lotte van den Berg will guide them through the city of utrecht and their own imagination. Reality becomes fiction, without anyone noticing. ugly little details come into view through the dramatic framework, but also relationships between people. Whether you have lived in utrecht for 22 years or whether you have just arrived, Cinema Imaginaire will give you a lasting new perspective on your presence in the city – surrounded by others. Lotte van den Berg was a guest at Festival a/d Werf in the past, and she has enjoyed great successes with her previous work. Agoraphobia, for instance, was selected for the Theaterfestival, and many of her shows have travelled to international festivals. she has worked from dordrecht to Kinshasa, and since a few years utrecht has been her home base.

Marcelo Evelin / Demolition Inc. Br suddenly everywhere is black with people

In Suddenly everywhere is black with people a group of performers painted pitch-black infiltrates the audience, coming terrifyingly and thrillingly close. The dancers move across the space like one big body lumped together, forcing the spectators to choose a new position all the time. Is it a war dance? Or a crowd on the run? An exodus? Marcelo Evelin has taken inspiration from the book Crowds and Power by Elias canetti, in which this winner of the Nobel prize tries to unravel the sinister phenomenon of the crowd. Suddenly everywhere is black with people deals with our fear of the unknown, but also with our fascination with it. The show was the ultimate festival hit at Noorderzon and during de Internationale Keuze (Rotterdamse schouwburg), greatly impressing both the press and audiences. do not miss this opportunity to see Suddenly everywhere is black with people in utrecht!

Jonathan Capdevielle fr Adishatz/Adieu

Like a Virgin, Papa Don’t Preach, Bad Romance… hits by Madonna and Lady Gaga; who doesn’t know them? using these universal pop songs the French performer Jonathan capdevielle conjures up the recognisable vulnerability and authenticity of his childhood. he entertains us and imitates voices, all the while showing us glimpses of himself and of the world around him: contemporary pop culture, night clubs, the international art world... he combines it with a traditional all-male choir from Tarbes, the region in the south of France where he is from. Adishatz/Adieu is a ‘one-man show’ in which capdevielle reveals himself: man and woman, child and adult, funny and sad, strong and vulnerable. In drag he veers from elegance to coarseness, loneliness to sensitivity, glamour to tristesse. capdevielle has had a string of successes over the years as an actor and performer in the French theatre scene. In his autobiographical Adishatz/Adieu he brings together his stage life with international pop culture and some very local traditions.

De Dansers & Theater Strahl Nl / dE ROsEs

A handful of people is crossing an invisible line. They no longer want to keep silent, be sycophants, be henchmen. They are following their ideals of humanity. They represent the right to independent thought and accept the consequences of their personal actions. They are fast. They are together. They are brave. Or are they crazy? The seven performers in ROSES are presenting an ode to the Weisse Rose, the student resistance group against the Nazi’s regime of terror set up by brother and sister hans and sophie scholl. With their visuals, movement, music and words they portray a group in which people’s lives depend on brotherhood and trust. This is not a story about the 1940s. This is a story about a group of young people who, against all the odds, have complete faith in each other.ROSES is the first collaboration between the dancers and musicians of de dansers, utrecht, and the actors of Theater strahl, Berlin’s foremost creators of adventurous drama for young audiences.

Christophe Meierhans BE some use For Your Broken claypots

What would our democracy look like under a different a law system? christophe Meierhans has his own ideas about the subject... In Some Use For Your Broken Claypots he is an impassioned election candidate campaigning, in a lecture-hall, for a radical overhaul of the democratic system as we know it today. Meierhans is promoting a new constitution and a new voting system. he intends to discontinue the election system in which we vote people into power – and wants to use elections to vote people out of power instead. Just like the citizens in ancient Athens did. during their public meetings they would take a shard of clay pottery and inscribe on it the name of the person they believed should leave the city. Meierhans is departing from this classical system, he lays the foundations for a future democracy. Would you vote for Meierhans?

After both performances there will be a short after lecture by professors of the Utrecht University in the lecture hall in collaboration with Utrecht School of Governance

Jan Martens Nl / BE The dog days Are Over

Eight dancers. They jump. They move at great speed. They sweat profusely. sometimes they fail. The Dog Days Are Over presents a group of dancers who surrender to a single act of physicality: the jump. A mathematic choreography and a repetitive bruising battle to prove that the dancers are only the performers, in the service of… what, exactly? The dancer as a gladiator in an arena with only a very thin line between art and entertainment. having staged a number of captivating and compelling solos, Jan Martens is creating a group piece this time, inspired by the famous American photographer Philippe halsman. he has stated that his pictures of countless celebrities jumping showed ‘the true face’ of mankind. Martens is doing the same with his dancers in The Dog Days Are Over. sPRING believes in the talent of the up-and-coming Martens; the previous edition included his Dialogue, and, as part of a two-year collaboration, his first show for the big stage will premiere during the 2015 festival.

De Utrechtse Spelen icw Rosa Ensemble Nl crave

Crave is the first show since the rebirth of De Utrechtse Spelen, utrecht’s own theatre company, under its new artistic director Thibaud delpeut. having successfully presented Blasted and 4.48 Psychosis, Crave is delpeut’s third staging of a play by sarah Kane, the British playwright who is so important to him. delpeut sees Crave as a score for two male and two female voices, trying to belong and looking for meaning in their metropolitan lives, and craving the purification of love. In a layered web of questions and answers, monologue and dialogue, the production creates a world fraught with desire, suppression, redemption and power. Especially for sPRING two utrecht-based companies are joining forces to create this show. Crave is the first co-production by de utrechtse spelen and the Rosa Ensemble. composer Wilbert Bulsink is developing an exclusive original composition for four musicians, who will be shadowing the actors on the stage.

Radhouane El Meddeb, Alexandre Fournier & Matias Pilet fr Nos Limites

With Nos Limites the French choreographer Radhouane El Meddeb has created a restrained love duet in which two men place their bodies in each other’s hands and explore the different aspects of their relationship. One of them appears to be paralysed. With his handicap he shows us how we, as human beings, have the instinctive ability to be resilient, to gather our will and pick up our bodies. El Meddeb has created the show with Matias Pilet and Alexandre Fournier, two circus artists. It has resulted in a mix between the acrobatics of the two circus artists and El Meddeb’s choreographer’s eye. Nos Limites is a tender dance piece, one that possesses great beauty and humanity, and is a reflection on human limitations and the ability to rise above them.

‘It’s a romance. It’s a romantic comedy. It’s an action movie. It’s a cover version.’ It’s all of these. Or is it a rehearsal? A webcam-audition on YouTube? With Alexandra Bachzetsis you never know… With great virtuosity, eleven performers, and a gym for a set, The Stages of Staging questions the way we shape our personalities in today’s world, through social media, sports, sexy songs, personal confessions and private films. Ready to be discovered as the next top model or the best dancer in the Netherlands. Life as a selfie. Because one thing is clear: all the world’s a ‘stage’, and we may be watched 24-7. so we’d better start working out and whip our bodies and faces into maximum shape. The Stages of Staging is a reflection on today’s mediatised society.

Maija Hirvanen fi For Those Who have Time

For Those Who Have Time is for those who have time. You really don’t need a lot of it, only 45 minutes will do. Which can be quite something in these hectic times in which we are all busy doing so many things at the same time, moving faster and faster, never having time for anything... The latest piece by the Finnish choreographer Maija hirvanen scrutinizes these manic times and asks what is really important. For Those Who Have Time is a highly precise choreography of overly physical, crazy and reduced forms of dance full of delicate emotion. The work examines the habits formed the rhythm of our contemporary lives. Maija hirvanen mocks our self-induced hustle and bustle. Make some time for For Those Who Have Time!

Mathilde Monnier & Dominique Figarella fr soapéra

The lights come on. A mountain of foam fills the stage. It looks like a piece of sculpture, but it moves, it vibrates and floats. And then, the dancers appear. Playing with the foam, kneading it into shape, creating new spaces, pulling it loose. The foam is like an unidentified dancing object with a life of its own; a half-liquidised set piece that changes all the time. Mathilde Monnier, who was recently appointed the artistic director of the prestigious centre National de danse in Paris, is known for the dialogue she maintains with other forms of art. For Soapéra she worked with visual artist dominique Figarella. Together they have created a playful choreography with a set like a painting, a canvas for the dancers to walk around in. dance and painting come together in new ways thanks to their dancing paint and painting dancers.

hip hop and streetdance from Kinshasa, contemporary dance from Brussels, and a German-Israeli dJ mixing international rhythms and local beats. choreographer ula sickle prefers to use these elements to find similarities and connections, rather than to gauge the distance between Africa and Europe. In Kinshasa Electric, choreography is the starting point from which sickle shows us how the lines between pop culture and high culture, here and there, art and commerce, authenticity and selling out become blurred in a globalised world such as ours.Like in earlier projects, for Kinshasa Electric ula sickle has worked with young congolese dancers. sickle focuses on her dancers’ individual backgrounds, the influence of the dance styles from African night life, and on the way their movements are culturally and politically encoded. Kinshasa Electric turns an utrecht theatre auditorium into an African nightclub.

Alma Söderberg & Hendrik Willekens Nl / sE / BE Idioter

Idioter is a concert, a performance, and a live drawing. The swedish Alma söderberg dances and ‘voices’ a choreography for voice and movement, while hendrik Willekens, from Flanders, draws. stubbornly and consistently the two young makers stick to their own methods and combine them. Willekens drawing his geometric landscapes, Söderberg playing with syllables, inflections and cadence. And then there’s the insanely loud electro music, performed live. The flow of the dream language thus created and the intensely rhythmic performance inexorably draw in the audience. What about the title? In dutch, ‘idioter’ is the comparative form of idiot; in swedish, it is the plural. söderberg and Willekens initially chose their title because they loved the sound of it. Later the word acquired significance in their rehearsal process: the endless repetition and the continuous discovery of what their minds and hands were making. Enough to drive them to idiocy…

Let’s party like it’s 2013! Because last year sPRING ended with a fantastic closing party on the stage of the stadsschouwburg utrecht. We ourselves have heard people qualify that night as ‘legendary’, ‘awesome’ and ‘party of the year’. And well, 600 party people can’t be wrong. so let’s make this party one to make last year’s look pale by comparison! With the stadsschouwburg utrecht and the club zindering we will be turning the entire building into a temporary nightclub. Onstage in the main auditorium you will find the hot German electro act Pentatones (freaky pop meets Berlin beats) who are bringing some very special guests for this final night of SPRING. The auditorium, as well as other places in the theatre, will also be home to a number of dJs from the Netherlands and abroad. Electro, indie, hip hop, funk, house… Better be there!

Like last year, admission will be free during the first hour (23.00 until midnight), but you will have to download a ticket online to get in (please note: limited availability!). After midnight, or if you don’t have an online ticket, you can buy your tickets at the door for €7.50.

Antique methods of preparation like fermenting, brining and pickling will be coming back in style. In this ‘culinary presentation’ chef Vellinga will present his vision on cuisine and give you a taste of the future in the form of a three-course dinner. More info at springutrecht.nl

Minutes before a show, programmers Rainer hofmann and Karlien Vanhoonacker will give a brief introduction on the show that follows. No, it won’t be an introductory speech; it will be a personal welcome. The flash intros will not take place with every show, they will come as a surprise.

Backstage ToursWhat are things like behind the scenes at sPriNg? This backstage tour will let you find out.

With stadsschouwburg utrecht, sPRING is organising a backstage tour that will tell visitors more about the way a festival is run and the extraordinary technology behind the shows Memento Mori (Fri 16 May), Adishatz /Adieu (sun 18 May) or Soapéra (sat 24 May). In addition the tour will also guide you through the stadsschouwburg utrecht’s listed building, taking you to places where you would not normally gain access without a ‘crew’ pass. 10 Minutes, 10 Questions + Bar Talksthe performers have received their applause, the house lights have come on, and then…? sPriNg will not let you leave just like that!

10 Minutes, 10 Questions is an after-show talk in the shape of a quiz, for which the audience comes up with the questions and the presenter asks them. Jot down the first question that comes to mind on one of our cards, and hand it in. The presenter will then fire ten of these questions in as many minutes at the performers, who will be mopping their brows because their shower will have to wait. An energetic after-show event that will only take ten minutes of your time. Bar talks. discussing the show at the bar, voicing their opinions and (dis)agreeing with each other. After a show a mixed group of guests will discuss what they have just seen, in the foyer of the stadsschouwburg utrecht. how did the theatre expert experience the show, what did the sociologist think of it, and what did the supermarket manager make of it? And what did you think? Join the debate, just like in the pub, with a drink to hand and beer nuts within easy reach.

De Vuurlinie – Kunstkritiek Nu de vuurlinie is an initiative of domein voor kunstkritiek, literary magazine de gids and eight cultural institutions including sPriNg Into the framework of this cooperation, Friday 23rd of May an after talk is organised with journalist simon van den Berg (Parool). SPRING goes sustainablesPRING is one of the events to have signed the sustainable Events covenant with the city of utrecht. As the parties in the covenant aim for utrecht to become carbon neutral by 2030, sPRING is sharing knowledge and experience with fellow festivals and events such as Bevrijdingsfestival, Nederlands Film Festival and Tweetakt/Kaap. With each edition we strive to make sPRING a little more sustainable. This year the festivals’ priorities are print, energy and catering. For instance, sPRING uses mostly local suppliers, all drinks glasses are recycled, and the chefs in our (festival) restaurant prepare their meals using sustainable ingredients wherever they can. And did you know that our international guests will be crossing the city on bicycles, and sleeping in hotels with a Green Key or even a Green Key Gold hallmark?
