Voke School Merger a Long-Time Coming -Groundbreaking Ceremony May 9th

When Danvers Town ManagerWayne Marquis tried to think backto the beginning of the process ofmerging the region's two vocation-al schools, he was struck by thewords of the Grateful Dead."What a long, strange trip it'sbeen," he told the dozens of elect-ed officials, students, schooladministrators and others gatheredunder a tent on a wet afternoonyesterday. "And I think that's anunderstatement."Most people will tell you it took14 years between conception andgetting shovels into the ground foryesterday's ceremonial ground-breaking of a brand-new, state-of-the-art school that promises tooffer the best vocational educationin the state. The truth is, that's alsoan understatement.About 30 years ago, "a countycommissioner came to us when wewere still at United Shoe (inBeverly) and brought up the sub-ject of merging the two schools,"said Robert Parsons, who once saton the School Committee of NorthShore Technical High School whenit was still in Beverly. "For a num-ber of years, nothing really hap-pened. ... I told my wife recently

that I thought I would be deadbefore this (merger) happened."Richard McLaughlin, who retiredas principal of North Shore Techfive years ago, began as a teacherat the school in 1976."They were talking about it evenback then, but nothing serious," hesaid. "It's made sense for a longtime, and I'm proud to be here."Finally, with the abolishment ofcounty government 16 years ago,the issue of merger could no longerbe ignored. Essex Agricultural andTechnical High School, which wasrun and funded by the county, sud-denly no longer had a fundingsource and became a ward of thestate. Meanwhile, North ShoreTech proved to be too small to han-dle the demand and had no land toexpand. The Aggie, though it hadlots of space to expand, didn't havethe resources."It made all the sense in the worldto merge," said Bill Scanlon, themayor of Beverly and an earlyadvocate for the merger.
