We hope you like the front coverimage this month. It is apainting taken from anexhibition of Fostered Children’sartwork. The competition rulesasked the children to drawsomething close to their heartsand this was one of the categorywinners. It probably reinforcesour own awareness of theimportance of homeand family.

In late July 1941, a prisoner at Auschwitzconcentration camp went missing andcould not be found. Karl Fritzsch, thedeputy commandant, announced aterrible reprisal against those whoremained. Ten men from the fugitive’sbunker were to be locked up withoutfood or water until all were dead.

As the ten were selected at random, oneof them, Franciszek Gajowniczek, criedout: “My wife! My children! What will theydo?” Fritzsch was uninterested in theman’s anguish, but what happened nexttook him completely by surprise. Anotherprisoner stepped quietly forward fromthe crowd, removed his cap and said:“Let me take his place. I am old. He hasa wife and children.”

The man’s name was Maximilian Kolbe,a Catholic priest from Poland. After amoment’s hesitation, Fritzsch acceptedhis offer and Kolbe was condemned todie in Gajowniczek’s place. The ten menwere thrown down the stairs of thestarvation bunker and left to die.Maximilian Kolbe spent the next two

weeks singing, praying and encouragingthe other men. By the end of thefortnight, Kolbe alone was still alive, andhis captors, requiring the bunker for newatrocities, ended his life with a fatalinjection of phenol.

Imagine for a moment how it would feelto be Franciszek Gajowniczek, sentenced to death and then suddenlyreprieved by the sacrifice of another.Your gratitude to Maximilian Kolbe wouldbe overwhelming. Gajowniczek lived for53 years after the day his life was saved. He never forgot what Kolbe had doneand never ceased to express hisgratitude to the man who had died on hisbehalf.

The amazing reality is that we all have areason for such gratitude. Every personon this planet has been served with aspiritual death sentence which cuts usoff from God. None of us can reach Godbased on our own merits, no matter howhard we try. Two thousand years ago, aman stepped forward from the crowdand offered to die in our place. His name

was Jesus. The Bible puts it like this:“But God demonstrates his own love forus in this: while we were still sinners,Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Love in this context is not a feeling or anemotion, but a selfless action on behalfof another person. Love is MaximilianKolbe stepping forward to die in place ofhis fellow prisoner. And love is Jesusstepping forward to die in place of youand me.

This leaves each of us with a decision tomake, whether to accept God’s offer tocancel the death sentence hanging overour lives. Many years ago, I reached aturning point in my life and decided tochoose God’s way. Although life as abeliever is not always easy, I am certainthat I made the right choice.

4. COACH PARKING –TEMPORARY ARRANGEMENTSDURING THE CONSTRUCTION OFTHE RIVER NESS FLOOD SCHEME

There had been circulated Report No. CIA-02-13 (424kb pdf) dated 29 January 2013by the Director of Transport, Environmentaland Community Services which invitedapproval for the use of Ardross Street as atemporary coach drop-off / pick-up locationfor coaches during the construction phaseof the River Ness Flood Alleviation Schemeand also for the opportunity to be taken toevaluate this location in relation to anylonger term options for coach drop-off /pick-up in the City of Inverness.

During a summary of the report, it wasconfirmed that the proposals to useArdross Street would create between sixand eight coach drop-off/pick-up baysclose to the City Centre, involving theremoval of the pay and display bays alongthe full length of the street on the NorthernMeeting Park side, change of use of thearea to allow coaches to drop off and pickup during the hours of 1000 and 1700 only(with no parking restrictions outwith thesetimes), each bay to be signed andnumbered for clarity and installation of amap showing where the main attractionswere in relation the drop-off/pick-up area.

The benefits of this solution were thatArdross Street was easy to locate and signfrom all trunk roads, within easy walkingdistance of the City Centre and attractionsand close to refreshment and toilet facilitiesin Eden Court & the Cathedral Tea Room.

Finally, in order to implement the proposal, and in addition to agreement from the CityCommittee, it was advised that a trafficorder would be required for Ardross Streetfor change of use from pay and displayparking to coach drop-off/pick-up, signagewould need to be installed at suitable andstrategic locations and publicity would berequired to be produced and widelydistributed.

During discussion, Members raised thefollowing issues:-the use of Ardross Street as a temporary

coach drop-off/pick-up location during the

construction of the River Ness FloodScheme was not ideal but represented thebest solution under the circumstances;there was a need to ensure that the road

safety issues involved in this newarrangement were carefully considered, not least in terms of the potential problemsassociated with the manoeuvring andparking of coaches and the need to ensurethe safety of passengers entering andleaving the vehicles;there had been concerns expressed by

the owners of local hotels and bed &breakfast establishments in the area inrelation to potential parking difficulties andthese concerns need to be addressed inthe first instance wherever possible;

there was a need to take account ofadditional traffic in the area during thetourist season, including tour buses fromInvergordon who regularly stopped in thecity; andit was imperative that Traffic Wardens

were in place to ensure the enforcement ofall conditions attached to this newarrangement and that the situation wasclosely monitored from the outset.

Thereafter, the Committee AGREED theuse of Ardross Street as a temporary coachdrop-off/pick-up location for coaches, asdetailed in Appendix A to the report, duringthe construction phase of the River NessFlood Alleviation Scheme and the relevantRoad Traffic Orders be progressed to allowthis change to be put in place for thecoming tourist season.

It was also AGREED that the opportunityshould be taken to evaluate this location inrelation to any longer term options forcoach drop-off/pick-up in the City ofInverness.

5. RIVER NESS FLOODALLEVIATION SCHEME (TIDALSECTION) PARKING AND TRAFFICORDERS PHASE 1

There had been circulated Report No. CIA-03-13 (2003kb pdf) dated 24 January 2013by the Director of Transport, Environmentaland Community Services which invitedapproval of the making andimplementation of Parking and TrafficOrders relating to the Streetscaping Works

associated with the River Ness FloodAlleviation Scheme (Tidal Section) Phase1. Members were also asked to note theprogramme for scheme delivery.

During a summary of the report, it wasconfirmed that a number of stakeholdermeetings, presentations and briefings hadtaken place through public exhibitions, street based stakeholder meetings, briefings for BID, tourism stakeholdermeetings and Member Briefings. Inaddition, various press releases had beenissued and scheme information had beenavailable from the Flood AlleviationScheme web page on the HighlandCouncil Website and all of theseconsultations had informed and influencedthe development of the proposed Parkingand Traffic Orders.

In this regard, objections to the Road TrafficOrders had been highlighted within thereport, together with detailed informationon progression of the Scheme which it wasnoted required to be completed by March2015 in order to achieve the fundingprogramme which had been set by theScottish Government.

12. CAPITAL PROJECTS TO 30NOVEMBER 2012

There had been circulated Report No. CIA-10-13 (78kb pdf) dated 31 January 2013 bythe Director of Finance which highlightedthe annual budget, expenditure to the endof November 2012 and the projected yearend position for 2012/13 for City Projectsincluded in the Council’s CapitalProgramme.

During a summary of the report, it wasconfirmed that capital spend in Nairn hadbeen unintentionally included in the reportbut that this would be corrected andextracted from future reports.

During discussion, and in regard to the‘Ach an Eas’ project, it was noted that therehad been additional costs which haddelayed Phase 2. Also, in relation to the‘Burnside’ project, this had been delayeddue to contaminated land which wouldhave to be made safe before buildingcommenced.

Returning home to Aviemorefollowing the Budget, I waslooking forward to getting awayfrom the cut and thrust ofparliamentary business andquestions. Little did I know I hada different, and in some wayseven more challenging audienceawaiting me in Aviemore! Being

quizzed by Aviemore Primary pupils was certainly more funthan the House of Commons or the TV studios but no lessdifficult. Questions such as ‘Can we move Big Ben to theHighlands?’ and ‘If you are my MP, who is your MP?’ made fora busy and entertaining chat. But it was also hugely informativefor me. Primary two pupils at the school re-enacted theircategory winning performance from the Badenoch andStrathspey Music Festival. It was a superb underwater themedmusical presentation and one young man received his winningcertificate for his awareness raising artwork for the Earth HourPoster Competition. I was also given a tour of the new high-tech specifications of the school. Pupils told me theyparticularly enjoyed the interactive technology, such as theelectronic whiteboard and the communal laptops.Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you to theteachers and pupils for a thrilling afternoon. Hopefully I will getto visit many more of our schools, organisations andbusinesses this spring and summer as I extend my regularsurgeries to include additional events for constituents in thesmaller communities of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch andStrathspey.

The Convention of the Highlands andIslands is a meeting between theScottish Government and Highlandsand Islands councils, health, enterprise, environment and skillsleaders. Writing this from Lerwick, where the Convention has just met,we have just had a day of

discussions on health, community planning, youth employmentand energy. We have also had a beautifully sunny day and, reputedly at least, the weather here was the best in Scotland! The aim of the Convention is to make sure that the Highlandsand the Islands are not neglected, in the grand scheme of things,by Ministers in Edinburgh or, for that matter, London. And it is ameans of ensuring that Ministers can discuss with Councilleaders matters of concern and importance. In addition toattending the Convention and during the three day visit, I met thelocal Port Authority in Lerwick, who are very busy and lookingto be able to carry out the work needed to decommission oilrigs. In addition, I visited Sullom Voe and also met with localcampaigners on a variety of issues. We have, in my party, always supported the idea that the Islands should enjoy thepower to control their own future - and that we should work withthem in partnership. The only way to do that is to have regularmeetings - which we do every six months. There is no shortcutor substitute in politics and in government in spending thenecessary time to listen and learn - it is time well spent.

New York New York! Daily direct flights with United Airlines from Glasgow and

Edinburgh have made this a popular destination year round from Scotland.

Arriving into New York via Newark or JFK, taxis are easilypicked up and will whisk you into the centre of bustling Manhattan. The famous skyline appears before your eyes, you will easily pick out the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, both iconic sights in New York.Manhattan is extremely diverse from the leafy, quiet streets of Greenwich Village, and the affluent Upper East Side to the hustle and bustle of Times Square - which is like a huge movie set with all its lights and billboards. Surrounded by Broadway theatres, a show is another must see in this city.Of the many museums in New York my personal favourite was the American Natural History Museum, so much to see and free tours offered daily. For the best views in Manhattan head to the Rockefeller Centre, the top of the rock observation deck has absolutely breathtaking views; make sure you have your camera to hand! Spot the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance, linking Manhattan to Brooklyn, the bridge is easily accessed and is a popular walking route.

For something different head to Battery Park (named after the old artillery battery therein) and take in a harbour cruise sailing on the East river and the Hudson to see the city from a different angle. For the more adventurous take a helicopter tour for a bird’s eye view of the city.A trip to New York would not be complete without a stroll through Central Park, where you will have the opportunity to ice skate or visit the zoo!

The city that never sleeps has something for everyone, full of easily identified sights,

fabulous museums and fantastic shops, bars and restaurants!

review

The Bog Roy Inn (formerly known as

the Old North Inn) is situated in the small

village of Inchmore on the A862 just

10 minutes from Inverness. The drive

from Inverness is beautiful, taking you

alongside the Beauly Firth.

We were warmly welcomed by

Debbie, who was our very friendly

waitress. She talked us through the

menu before giving us time to choose.

The varied menu has many traditional

favourites as well as some more

eclectic offerings. The Inn caters for

everyone, from young families to the

more mature and the dining room has

a lovely warm feel, is very spacious,

well laid out and tastefully decorated.

All in all - very inviting!

The extremely well crafted, but very

reasonably priced menu caters for all

ages and tastes and the portion sizes

are generous. There is a choice of a

lunchtime and an evening menu

depending on what time you eat (but

book ahead, acording to Debbie the

Sunday Carvery is very popular). The

lunchtime menu is served from midday

to 4pm and dinner is served from 4pm

onwards.

We ate in the evening and it had a

really welcoming feel. To start with we

had the breaded Stornaway black

pudding medallions topped with red

onion marmalade and the flaky hot

smoked salmon and prawn salad

which were both delicious! We

followed that with beef stir fry with egg

Brilliant value, great food - go with the whole family!

noodles and a chilli sauce jus and

smoked seafood pappardelle.

The beef had the perfect amount

of chilli in it, just enough to give it

a kick. The seafood pasta came

with a salmon fillet on the top,

which was beautifully cooked, as

well as mussles and prawns in a

white wine sauce mixed in with

the pasta.

Popular dishes amongst other

diners were the individual steak

and haggis pies served with

potatoes or chips and the breast

of chicken with smoked bacon

and whisky sauce served with

haggis mash. The dessert menu

offers choices that should please

everyone. My partner chose the

vanilla panna cotta served with

a cinnamon biscotti and forest

fruits. I had the white chocolate

and apricot and crumble tart

served with brandy sauce, both

simply delicious.

A crowd pleaser on the dessert

menu, for those who just can’t

decide, is their trio of desserts

which at the time of writing was

sticky banana pudding with

toffee sauce, cheesecake of the

moment and triple chocolate

torte. A delicious way to end

the meal.

The Bog Roy Inn is a great venue

for lunch or dinner where you can

be assured of a warm welcome

and excellent food. Go Soon!

motormotorVolkswagen - a family tradition

FOR sixty years the Hawco family has been synonymous with the motor trade in Moray and the Highlands – a respected name that continues today as one of Scotland’s largest Volkswagen franchises and an expanding used car business.

From their main base at Inverness, Hawco Volkswagen has busy branches at Elgin and Peterhead with a strong presence in Fort William.

At Elgin under the management of Ken Hammond the main dealership at Wards Road has recently added a large Volkswagen Approved Used Car Centre operating just a few hundred metres away on Edgar Road where some of the finest pre-owned cars in the area are now on display.

To celebrate their 60th anniversary everyone who buys a new or used car from any Hawco Volkswagen branch this year will be automatically entered into a draw and could win a brand new Volkswagen Beetle.

Hawco has represented the Volkswagen brand in Elgin since 1953. Today the wider Hawco Group employs more than 150 people at various locations and retails cars and commercials throughout Scotland.

The Elgin branch is fully equipped to sell and service all Volkswagen models and are prepared for the arrival of summer with some outstanding Spring offers covering favourites from the range, including the compact Tiguan SUV and Touran MPV.

The new Golf Plus is available on a hire purchase offer with zero per cent finance until June 30. It’s a great deal for a spacious five-door that can also be driven away on a retail cash deal with a £1500 discount. The finance offer means that a high-efficiency 1.2 TSI in S trim costing £16,310 can be delivered for a deposit of £6626 followed by 36 equal payments of £269.

Another top choice is the latest Polo. Costing from just £10,490 it is available with 12 month’s free insurance for over 21-year-olds and a finance deal that includes a £1000 deposit contribution from Volkswagen and a three-year/30,000-mile servicing package for only £249.

The Golf Plus from Hawco Volkswagen comes with a £1500 discount.

Special Spring offers are available on the new Polo range.

Scarifying the winter moss and thatch

needs done now, either with a spring

rake, an electric scarifier (if you have

one), or hiring a big scarifier (or getting

us to do it). Spring is very late this year

and Easter passed with very few lawns

needing their first cut. Scarifying is done

outwith the growing season (usually at

the very end, or the very beginning of

the season). Why not scarify in the

summer when the weather is better

some of you will ask? There are at least

3 good reasons:

1 Scarifying is very traumatic for the grass

and new growing grass is too fragile to

survive a rigorous scarifying, it will be

ripped out.

2 Most scarified lawns look pretty poorly

until they recover, Winter doesn’t matter

so much, but most people want to enjoy

their gardens in the Summer.

3 Putting on a feed and then trashing

the grass is rather counterproductive,

not to mention a bit of a waste of your

money.

We had a lot of pretty horrified feedback from the scarifying photo in last month’s Spotlight Magazine, so I’ve put it in again as a reminder!

WHY DID JESUS DIE?

Published by www.WordsbytheWayside.co.uk Registered Scottish Charity SCO41290

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life’’

John 3:16

Sin Brings DeathIn God’s Word, the Bible, we learn that death came into the world because of sin. “Wherefore … by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). You and I die because we are sinners; we have forfeited our right to live on the earth. “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Jesus Died For UsDid Jesus die because He had sinned? No. Listen to the inspired Word of God: “In Him is no sin” (1 John 3:5); “Who did no sin” (1 Peter 2:22); “Who knew no sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Therefore, death had no claim upon Him. But, blessed be His Name, He “gave Himself for our sins” (Galatians 1:4). It was love to you and me that caused the Lord Jesus Christ to come down from heaven and die on Calvary’s cross. It was love to us that held Him on that shameful cross until He had nished the work of atonement to the glory of God.A holy, righteous, just God cannot let sin go unpun-ished. On the cross the Lord Jesus bore God’s judgment against sin in our stead, as our substitute; and now God is oering not only forgiveness, but also justication to the repentant sinner who believes in Jesus. He is “just, and the justier of him which believeth in Jesus” (Romans 3:26). God showed His approval of that mighty work by raising the Lord Jesus from among the dead and seating Him at His own right hand in heaven (Mark 16:19).

Jesus Is The WayThere is no other way you can be saved but through the atoning death of the Lord Jesus. He says : “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6). “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Why did Jesus die? Have you ever realized that it was your sins that caused Him to die upon the cross, or ever felt your need of Him as your personal Saviour? As you read this little message, He looks down from heaven upon you, and He reads the thoughts and intents of your heart. He knows your attitude toward your sins, as well as your attitude toward the One who wants to be your Saviour. If you don’t know the forgiveness of sins, there is only one person in the world to blame and that is yourself. God is ready to forgive you, if only you are ready to turn from your sins and be forgiven.

Turn To Him TodayGod knows all about you. I urge you not to lay aside this opportunity until you have settled this great question of your sin and eternity and have received the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. Once you see the seriousness of your sinful condition before God, you will never get rest of conscience and heart until you have trusted the Saviour of sinners. He made “peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20). We are “reconciled to God by the death of His Son” (Romans 5:10).

If you do not trust Him now as your Saviour, you will meet Him in eternity as your Judge. For God “hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead” (Acts 17:31).

Won’t you ee to Him now for refuge while it is the day of salvation? He will be your shelter. “We pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). “Dost thou believe on the Son of God?”( John 9:35) Have faith and doubt not.

This question is of vital importance because your eternal destiny depends upon your answer to it. Do you know why Jesus died? If not, I believe God has sent me across your path to tell you.
