Spotlight: Jaffrey Chamber Africa Trip

This year’s Chamber Travel program brought us to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. We flew from Boston to Dubai where some of us spent three nights experiencing the Middle Eastern countries’ world- renowned architec-ture, fashion, and cuisine and learning about their rich cultural history. We even had the chance to ride a camel and take an exciting Land Rover ride across the desert sand dunes.

Then, it was off to South Africa. After a nine-hour flight, we landed at the Cape Town International Airport. Cape Town has a population of about six hundred thousand people. It has the charm of a small coastal village with the cosmopolitan style of a big city. We had a chance to explore to the waterfront about two blocks from our hotel. There was a great variety of shops and restaurants as well as performers playing live music in the streets.

Our second day there, we took a cable car to the top of Table Mountain, one of the most prominent natural land features in Cape Town. From there, at an altitude of fifteen hundred meters, we had a breathtaking view of the city below, including Robben Island in Table Bay where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years imprisoned. In the afternoon, we explored the downtown and, that evening, we dined at the Gold Restaurant where we experienced a traditional African Handwashing Ceremony, enjoyed an audience-participation drum performance, and indulged in delicious African cuisine.

The following day, we were off to the Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost point on the African con-tinent, and even got to see some African Penguins! That evening, we were guests at a home-hosted dinner and had the opportunity to learn about the lives of a family who lived in the region.

Then we were off to Stellenbosch, the wine region of South Africa. The land-scape is defined by gently rolling hills of vineyards with majestic mountain ranges as the backdrop. We stopped at a local winery for a tasting before con-tinuing on to the charming town of Stellenbosch. Within walking distance of our hotel were a variety of stores, restaurants, and landmarks including a lovely botanical garden displaying the King Protea, South Africa’s National Flower.

The next day, we took a short bus trip over to the coastal town of Hermanus. Hermanus is known for watching the Southern Right Whales that congregate in the bay. You can dine by the water and watch the whales breaching in the bay.

Then we were off to the Entabeni Conservancy, outside of Johannesburg. It was a two-hour flight to Johannesburg and an hour-and-a-half bus ride to the Limpopo Provence and the entrance to the Conservancy. Land Vehicles then transported us the Hanglip Mountain Lodge, situated in the heart of the reserve, that was to be our home for the next three days. From there, we embarked on four game drives, two in the early morning and two at dusk. Along our drives, we saw a vast array of wildlife including elephants, wildebeests, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, warthogs, and the majestic African lion. Our final night at the Hanglip concluded with a fireside barbeque in their outdoor boma.

The following morning, we embarked on a final early morning game drive before breakfast before our bus took us back to Sandton, Johan-nesburg where we spent the night before continuing our adventure to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls, discovered by the British explorer, David Livingstone in 1855, is one of the longest and tallest waterfalls in the world. You can see the falls from many different van-tage points along a path that follow the falls and a portion of the Zambezi river that feeds it.

That evening, we enjoyed a three-hour River Cruise along the Zambezi where we spotted a variety of the local wildlife, including hippos, cape buffalo, impalas, water bucks, and even a herd of elephants with a newly born baby.

The next morning, we visited the Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary where we got a chance to interact with the elephants and even feed them. The mission of the Sanctuary is to care for orphaned elephants who sometimes are released back into the wild. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Boma restaurant located at our hotel. The Boma specializes in a local game meat barbeque and features live entertainment. You can even try the Mopane Worm if you are feeling extra adventurous.

Our final destination was the Chobe Marina Lodge in neighboring Botswana. The evening we arrived, we enjoyed a riverboat cruise along the Chobe River where we saw more local wildlife and witnessed a spectacular African sunset. The next morning, we took another early game drive in nearby Chobe National Park. We spotted more African elephants, cape buffalo, hippos, monkeys, eagles, kudu, and even a family of lions. That evening, we were given the option of taking another river cruise or a final game drive. Most of the group opted for the game drive. Unfortunately, the leopards eluded us… the last of the Big 5 that we had waited to see on our trip.

Willa Cather Celebration Gains National Attention

Linda Stonehill, owner of Paran Creative, LLC, created a wonderful poster that was the visual element in the publicity campaign that resulted in a six-minute nationwide feature on NPR’s All Things Considered: http://www.nhpr.org/post/jaffrey-conference-celebrates-willa-cathers-new-hampshire-connection#stream/0. The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, the Keene Sentinel’s ELF section, the Monadnock Shopper, and The Boston Globe provided excellent news coverage. Linda also designed the 11”x17” folded program brochure, the menu, and the name tags that helped create a Cather community over the two days.

A Carol Hess video of some of the events may be seen at: https://youtu.be/g1m04rqIDb4. Tom Doane and Carol Hess took some excellent photographs.

The six local organizing sponsors were First Church in Jaffrey, Friends and Trustees of the Jaffrey Public Library, Jaffrey Center Vil-lage Improvement Society, Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce, Jaffrey Civic Center, and the initial sponsor, the Jaffrey Historical Society. The national sponsors were the MacDowell Colony and the Willa Cather Foundation. Community sponsors included Belletetes, D.D. Bean & Sons, Franklin Pierce University, Gene and Margaret Pokorny, RiverMead, Toadstool Bookstores, two anonymous donors, and Wright Painting.

Co-Chairs of the Planning Committee, Lou Casagrande and Bruce Hill, president of the Jaffrey Historical Society, thanked the community sponsors and 46 individuals, companies, and organizations for their work and in-kind contributions. The other members of the Planning Committee were Ken Campbell (writing and publicity), Suze Campbell (onsite registration, organization, and program content), Emily Carr (Library rep), Tom Doane (photos and Civic Center), Virginia Eskin (music), Pam Hill (food), Max Mitchell (website and tickets), Cathy Proulx (Shattuck Golf Club liaison and menu content), Patty Scholl (name tags and folders), Charlie Turcotte (myriad details), and Regina Vorce (Civic Center reception).

Jaffrey, NH October 19-20, 2018

The Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce played a key role in Jaffrey’s very successful October 19th-20th national celebration of Willa Cather’s Spirit Lives On! The celebration involved the joint efforts and coordination of six Jaffrey organizations and 320 people: 127 ticket buyers, 103 viewers of Willa Cather videos at the River Street Theatre, 45 volunteers, and nearly 50 timely vendor and in-kind donations by Chamber members, local businesses, organizations, and citizens.

Willa Cather enjoyed Jaffrey during her stays at the Shattuck Inn from 1917 to 1940; Jaffrey was where she said she did her best work and where she wished to be buried. Her grave and that of Edith Lewis, her companion, is in the SW corner of the Old Burial Ground and is a significant Jaffrey tourist attraction. Cather wrote parts of nine novels in Jaffrey, most notably, My Ántonia (1918) and the Pulitzer Prize-win-ning novel, One of Ours, which she wrote in a tent in a field at High Mowing, a half mile through the woods from the Shattuck Inn. After the celebration, a Lexington, MA couple emailed, “Everything was just terrific, from the planning and organization to the presentations, food, music, etc. I can’t think of one thing that was not interesting and professional.” The event received good publicity regionwide, in Bos-ton, and on National Public Radio.

The Jaffrey Selectmen proclaimed Willa Cather Weekend in Jaffrey, and 85 New Hampshire residents (61 from Jaffrey alone) bought tickets to the celebration’s 11 events spanning two days.

The Chamber’s roles in the events were many. Incoming President Matt McCarthy introduced the Willa Cather Foundation guest speakers—Executive Director Ashley Olson and Education Director Tracy Tucker—and fondly recalled reading Cather’s My Ántonia during his Conant High School days.

Executive Director Max Mitchell and his staff smoothly handled the registration and payments from 111 of the 127 registrants, including 20 from seven other states: Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York, and Texas. The Chamber’s website was the focus for information, publicity, and ticket orders. The staff collected the data and passed it on to the Cather Planning Committee to guide advertising and the assembly of name tags and presentation folders. Max handled all the credit card payments and paid many of the vendors. The Jaffrey Historical Society also handled tickets and vendor payments.

1. Always Conduct Thorough Research on the Current Market Real estate values fluctuate due to local supply/demand; it's

important to remember that properties always sell for no more or less than what the market will bear at that time. Whether buying or selling, do your research and be confident in your price.

2. Keep Your Home's Condition Pristine In Order to SellWell-maintained houses always sell faster. Buyers appreci-

ate houses that look move-in ready and are updated versus those that need a lot of work. In a hot real estate market, most houses sell quickly. But during a cooler market period, buyers can get very picky, so it will be the nicer ones that continue to sell.

3. Approach Negotiations from a Collaborative Standpoint Try not to be fixated on a specific price. The goal should be

working together to come to an agreement that satisfies both par-ties. Being stubborn can mean the end of negotiations. Take a step back and try to think about what would be a win for everyone?

4. Remember that a Home's Value Is Determined by The Buyer No matter what the market conditions are, the true market

value of a home is only equal to what a buyer is willing to pay. Just because a seller believes their home is worth a certain amount of money, it won’t always be equal to what a buyer believes it to be.

5. Find an Experienced Local Real Estate Agent Home sellers and buyers can get more information about

real estate online than ever. But what they can't get online, and can only get from a local real estate agent, is that insider knowl-edge. A local agent who is a neighborhood expert knows things about the homes and the community that you just can't get online!

Jaffrey Civic Center Hosts Annual Autumn Art Exhibit

Member News

Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center and the Monadnock Adult Care Center (MACC) received a $5,000 grant from the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund.

Since 1994, RSVP’s Neighbors-In-Deed program has been responding to the needs of vulnerable people in the 33 towns of the Monadnock Region. Volunteers are matched one-to-one to provide companionship and non-medical help with daily activities such as visits; transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and errands; respite for caregivers; and minor home repairs. Because the program is relationship-based and services are provided free of charge, this program receives a high volume of requests. Volunteers are always needed, particularly those 55 and older who have life experience and available time to share.

The Monadnock Adult Care Center opened approximately thirty years ago in Jaffrey to share in the daytime caregiving of adults who suffer from various medical, developmental, and social issues in a supervised, safe, and comfortable setting. The Center allows families and caregivers the opportunity for much-needed respite time and the ability to remain employed while caring for a loved one. MACC is an approved Medicaid provider that is licensed as a Medical Day Health Center. It also is licensed by the US Veterans Association and is a member of the NH Adult Day Services Association.

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organizations without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs. The Fund is operated by volunteer Directors who rec-ommend to the Bishop of Manchester grant awards for New Hampshire organizations whose missions are consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Monadnock RSVP and the Monadnock Adult Care Center are programs of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way Agency.

Our final exhibit of the year, the Autumn Art Exhibit is a well-attended venue for both new and experienced artists. The show, fea-turing photographs, paintings, drawings, textiles, glassworks, paperworks, pottery pieces, woodworking, and other 3D dis-ciplines, will run through Wednesday, December 18th, and admission is free.

Visit the Jaffrey Civic Center, located at 40 Main Street in Jaffrey next to the Library, Monday through Friday, 10:00-noon and 1:00-5:00, and Saturday, 10:00-2:00. Parking is behind the building. The event brings people together to remember the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to renew the values he stood for. This year’s theme, “We Are All One Humanity,” is inspired by Dr. King’s frequent reflection that “all life is interrelated.” Dr. Dottie Morris, Associate Vice President of Diversity and Inclu-sion at Keene State College, will provide the keynote, and guest refugee speakers who are cli-ents of the International Institute of New England will share their experiences.

Winners of the MLK Middle School Student Art Contest will be announced and school choirs will provide music.

The event, to be heralded at 4:45pm with the ringing of the United Church's Revere Bell as part of the “Let Freedom Ring: Choose Non-Violence” National Bell-Ringing Ceremony, will be followed by the reception at the MLK Student Exhibit at the Jaf-frey Civic Center. This event and the reception are free and open to the public.

In keeping with the theme, our National Day of Service proj-ect will collect goods for people displaced by the war in Syria under the auspices of Nudaysyria (www.nudaysyria.org), a New Hampshire non-profit organiza-tion. Clothing, bedding, medical equipment such as crutches and wheelchairs, bicycles in any

condition, toys, books, and more are critically needed. A full list may be found under the “Cel-ebrating MLK, Jr.” tab at www.jaffreyciviccenter.com. Items may be dropped off at the Civic Center from January 11th to 26th. Volunteers are welcome and are needed to help sort and pack the donations on Saturday, January 26th from 10:00-4:00 (drop-in), with a “rain date” of Sunday, January 27th from

noon-4:00pm. Refreshments will be provided. This MLK National Day of Service project could be a great family activity.

For more information, or in case of questionable weather, please visit www.jaffreyciviccenter.com or the Jaffrey Civic Center’s Face-book page, email [email protected], or call the Civic Cen-ter at 532-6527.
